Navigating in Complex Process Model Collections
The increasing adoption of process-aware information systems (PAIS) has led to the emergence of large
process model collections. In the automotive and healthcare domains, for example, such collections may
comprise hundreds or thousands of process models, each consisting of numerous process elements (e.g.,
process tasks or data objects). In existing modeling environments, process models are presented to users
in a rather static manner; i.e., as image maps not allowing for any context-specific user interactions.
As process participants have different needs and thus require specific presentations of available process
information, such static approaches are usually not sufficient to assist them in their daily work. For
example, a business manager only requires an abstract overview of a process model collection, whereas a
knowledge worker (e.g., a requirements engineer) needs detailed information on specific process tasks.
In general, a more flexible navigation and visualization approach is needed, which allows process participants
to flexibly interact with process model collections in order to navigate from a standard (i.e., default)
visualization of a process model collection to a context-specific one. With the Process Navigation and
Visualization (ProNaVis) framework, this thesis provides such a flexible navigation approach for large and
complex process model collections. Specifically, ProNaVis enables the flexible navigation within process
model collections along three navigation dimensions. First, the geographic dimension allows zooming in
and out of the process models. Second, the semantic dimension may be utilized to increase or decrease
the level of detail. Third, the view dimension allows switching between different visualizations. All three
navigation dimensions have been addressed in an isolated fashion in existing navigation approaches so
far, but only ProNaVis provides an integrated support for all three dimensions.
The concepts developed in this thesis were validated using various methods. First, they were implemented
in the process navigation tool Compass, which has been used by several departments of an automotive
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Second, ProNaVis concepts were evaluated in two experiments,
investigating both navigation and visualization aspects. Third, the developed concepts were
successfully applied to process-oriented information logistics (POIL). Experimental as well as empirical
results have provided evidence that ProNaVis will enable a much more flexible navigation in process
model repositories compared to existing approaches
DelosDLMS: From the DELOS vision to the implementation of a future digital library management system
DelosDLMS is a novel digital library management system (DLMS) that has been developed as an integration effort within the DELOS Network of Excellence, a European Commission initiative funded under its fifth and sixth framework programs. In this paper, we describe DelosDLMS that takes into account the recommendations of several activities that were initiated by DELOS including the DELOS vision for digital libraries (DLs). A key aspect of DelosDLMS is its novel generic infrastructure that allows the generation of digital library systems out of a set of basic system services and DL services in a modular and extensible way. DL services like feature extraction, visualization, intelligent browsing, media-type-specific indexing, support for multilinguality, relevance feedback and many others can easily be incorporated or replaced. A further key aspect of DelosDLMS is its robustness against failures and its scalability for large collections and many parallel user requests. We discuss the current status of an effort to build DelosDLMS, a Digital Library Management System that integrates in various ways several components developed by DELOS members and showcases a great variety of functionality that is outlined as part of the DELOS visio
Shakespeareʼs Complete Works as a Benchmark for Evaluating Multiscale Document-Navigation Techniques
International audienceIn this paper, we describe an experimental platform dedicated to the comparative evaluation of multiscale electronic-document navigation techniques. One noteworthy characteristics of our platform is that it allows the user not only to translate the document (for example, to pan and zoom) but also to tilt the virtual camera to obtain freely chosen perspective views of the document. Second, the platform makes it possible to explore, with semantic zooming, the 150,000 verses that comprise the complete works of William Shakespeare. We argue that reaching and selecting one specific verse in this very large text corpus amounts to a perfectly well defined Fitts task, leading to rigorous assessments of target acquisition performance. For lack of a standard, the various multiscale techniques that have been reported recently in the literature are difficult to compare. We recommend that Shakespeare's complete works, converted into a single document that can be zoomed both geometrically and semantically, be used as a benchmark to facilitate systematic experimental comparisons, using Fitts' target acquisition paradigm
Sampo-UI: A Full Stack JavaScript Framework for Developing Semantic Portal User Interfaces
This paper presents a new software framework, SAMPO-UI, for developing user interfaces for semantic portals. The goal is to provide the end-user with multiple application perspectives to Linked Data knowledge graphs, and a two-step usage cycle based on faceted search combined with ready-to-use tooling for data analysis. For the software developer, the SAMPO-UI framework makes it possible to create highly customizable, user-friendly, and responsive user interfaces using current state-of-the-art JavaScript libraries and data from SPARQL endpoints, while saving substantial coding effort. SAMPO-UI is published on GitHub under the open MIT License and has been utilized in several internal and external projects. The framework has been used thus far in creating six published and five forth-coming portals, mostly related to the Cultural Heritage domain, that have had tens of thousands of end-users on the Web.Peer reviewe
EPOS : evolving personal to organizational knowledge spaces
EPOS will leverage the user´s personal workspace with its manyfold native information structures to his personal knowledge space and in cooperation with other personal workspaces contribute to the organizational knowledge space which is represented in the organizational memory.
This first milestone presents results from the project´s first year in the areas of the personal informational model, user observation for context elicitation, collaborative information retrieval and information visualization
User Interfaces for Personal Knowledge Management with Semantic Technologies
This thesis describes iMapping and QuiKey, two novel user interface concepts for dealing with structured information. iMapping is a visual knowledge mapping technique based on zooming, which combines the advantages of several existing approaches and scales up to very large maps. QuiKey is a text-based tool to interact with graph-structured knowledge bases with very high interaction efficiency. Both tools have been implemented and positively evaluated in user studies
Unterstützung des Editierens von Graphen in Visuellen Repräsentationen
The goal of this thesis is to provide solutions for supporting the direct editing of graphs in visual representations for analyzing graphs. For that, a conceptual view on the user's tasks is established first. On this basis, several novel approaches to "visually edit" the different data aspects of graphs - the graph's structure and associated attribute values - are introduced. Thereby, different visual graph representations suitable for communicating the data are considered.
