    Viewing Visual Analytics as Model Building

    To complement the currently existing definitions and conceptual frameworks of visual analytics, which focus mainly on activities performed by analysts and types of techniques they use, we attempt to define the expected results of these activities. We argue that the main goal of doing visual analytics is to build a mental and/or formal model of a certain piece of reality reflected in data. The purpose of the model may be to understand, to forecast or to control this piece of reality. Based on this model-building perspective, we propose a detailed conceptual framework in which the visual analytics process is considered as a goal-oriented workflow producing a model as a result. We demonstrate how this framework can be used for performing an analytical survey of the visual analytics research field and identifying the directions and areas where further research is needed

    Towards a Structural Framework for Explicit Domain Knowledge in Visual Analytics

    Clinicians and other analysts working with healthcare data are in need for better support to cope with large and complex data. While an increasing number of visual analytics environments integrates explicit domain knowledge as a means to deliver a precise representation of the available data, theoretical work so far has focused on the role of knowledge in the visual analytics process. There has been little discussion about how such explicit domain knowledge can be structured in a generalized framework. This paper collects desiderata for such a structural framework, proposes how to address these desiderata based on the model of linked data, and demonstrates the applicability in a visual analytics environment for physiotherapy.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Towards a framework for developing visual analytics in supply chain environments

    Visual Analytics (VA) has shown to be of significant importance for Supply Chain (SC) analytics. However, SC partners still have challenges incorporating it into their data-driven decision-making activities. A conceptual framework for the development and deployment of a VA system provides an abstract, platform-independent model for the whole process of VA, covering requirement specification, data collection and pre-processing, visualization recommendation, visualization specification and implementation, and evaluations. In this paper, we propose such a framework based on three main aspects: 1) Business view, 2) Asset view, and 3) Technology view. Each of these views covers a set of steps to facilitate the development and maintenance of the system in its context. The framework follows a consistent process structure that comprises activities, tasks, and people. The final output of the whole process is the VA as a deliverable. This facilitates the alignment of VA activities with business processes and decision-making activities. We presented the framework's applicability using an actual usage scenario and left the implementation of the system for future work

    Visual (dis)Confirmation: Validating Models and Hypotheses with Visualizations

    Data visualization provides a powerful way for analysts to explore and make data-driven discoveries. However, current visual analytic tools provide only limited support for hypothesis-driven inquiry, as their built-in interactions and workflows are primarily intended for exploratory analysis. Visualization tools notably lack capabilities that would allow users to visually and incrementally test the fit of their conceptual models and provisional hypotheses against the data. This imbalance could bias users to overly rely on exploratory analysis as the principal mode of inquiry, which can be detrimental to discovery. In this paper, we introduce Visual (dis) Confirmation, a tool for conducting confirmatory, hypothesis-driven analyses with visualizations. Users interact by framing hypotheses and data expectations in natural language. The system then selects conceptually relevant data features and automatically generates visualizations to validate the underlying expectations. Distinctively, the resulting visualizations also highlight places where one's mental model disagrees with the data, so as to stimulate reflection. The proposed tool represents a new class of interactive data systems capable of supporting confirmatory visual analysis, and responding more intelligently by spotlighting gaps between one's knowledge and the data.
