    Dual back-stepping observer to anticipate the rollover risk in under/over-steering situations. Application to ATVs in off-road context

    International audienceIn this paper an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) rollover prevention system is proposed. It is based on the online estimation and prediction of the Lateral Load Transfer (LLT), allowing the evaluation of dynamic instabilities. Using a vehicle model based on two 2D representations, the LLT can be estimated and predicted. As we consider off road vehicle, grip conditions must be encountered and are here estimated thanks to observation theory. Nevertheless, two main behaviours (over/under-steering) may be encountered pending on grip, and vehicle configuration. Because of the low cost sensor, these two opposite dynamics cannot be explicitly discriminated. As a result, two observers are used according to the vehicle behaviour. Based on a bicycle model and a low cost perception system, they estimate on-line the terrain properties (grip conditions, global sideslip angle and bank angle). A "supervisor" selects on-line the right observer. Associated to a predictive control algorithm, based on the extrapolation of rider's action and the selected estimated dynamical state, the risk can be anticipated, enabling to warn the pilot and to consider the implementation of active actions. Simulations and full-scale experimentations are presented to discuss about the efficiency of the proposed solution

    Nonlinear observers for predicting state-of-charge and state-of-health of lead-acid batteries for hybrid-electric vehicles

    Abstract—This paper describes the application of state-estimation techniques for the real-time prediction of the state-of-charge (SoC) and state-of-health (SoH) of lead-acid cells. Specifically, approaches based on the well-known Kalman Filter (KF) and Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), are presented, using a generic cell model, to provide correction for offset, drift, and long-term state divergence—an unfortunate feature of more traditional coulomb-counting techniques. The underlying dynamic behavior of each cell is modeled using two capacitors (bulk and surface) and three resistors (terminal, surface, and end), from which the SoC is determined from the voltage present on the bulk capacitor. Although the structure of the model has been previously reported for describing the characteristics of lithium-ion cells, here it is shown to also provide an alternative to commonly employed models of lead-acid cells when used in conjunction with a KF to estimate SoC and an EKF to predict state-of-health (SoH). Measurements using real-time road data are used to compare the performance of conventional integration-based methods for estimating SoC with those predicted from the presented state estimation schemes. Results show that the proposed methodologies are superior to more traditional techniques, with accuracy in determining the SoC within 2% being demonstrated. Moreover, by accounting for the nonlinearities present within the dynamic cell model, the application of an EKF is shown to provide verifiable indications of SoH of the cell pack

    Direct yaw-moment control of an in-wheel-motored electric vehicle based on body slip angle fuzzy observer

    A stabilizing observer-based control algorithm for an in-wheel-motored vehicle is proposed, which generates direct yaw moment to compensate for the state deviations. The control scheme is based on a fuzzy rule-based body slip angle (beta) observer. In the design strategy of the fuzzy observer, the vehicle dynamics is represented by Takagi-Sugeno-like fuzzy models. Initially, local equivalent vehicle models are built using the linear approximations of vehicle dynamics for low and high lateral acceleration operating regimes, respectively. The optimal beta observer is then designed for each local model using Kalman filter theory. Finally, local observers are combined to form the overall control system by using fuzzy rules. These fuzzy rules represent the qualitative relationships among the variables associated with the nonlinear and uncertain nature of vehicle dynamics, such as tire force saturation and the influence of road adherence. An adaptation mechanism for the fuzzy membership functions has been incorporated to improve the accuracy and performance of the system.     This paper proposes the real-time Kalman filter based observer for Lithium-ion concentration estimation for the electrochemical battery model. Since the computation limitation of real-time battery management system (BMS) micro-processor, the battery model which is utilized in observer has been further simplified. In this paper, the Kalman filter based observer is applied on a reduced order model of single particle model to reduce computational burden for real-time applications. Both solid phase surface lithium concentration and battery state of charge (SoC) can be estimated with real-time capability. Software simulation results and the availability comparison of observers in different Hardware-in- the-loop simulation setups demonstrate the performance of the proposed method in state estimation and real-time application

    A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers. The presented techniques are shown to correct for offset, drift and long-term state divergence-an unfortunate feature of employing stand-alone models and more traditional coulomb-counting techniques. Measurements using real-time road data are used to compare the performance of conventional integration-based methods for estimating SoC, with those predicted from the presented state estimation schemes. Results show that the proposed methodologies are superior with SoC being estimated to be within 1% of measured. Moreover, by accounting for the nonlinearities present within the dynamic cell model, the application of an EKF is shown to provide verifiable indications of SoH of the cell pack

The unknown parameters, wind disturbances, and system nonlinearity are considered as external disturbances that are estimated using a multi-gap observer.     Distributed Event-Based State Estimation for Networked Systems: An LMI-Approach

    In this work, a dynamic system is controlled by multiple sensor-actuator agents, each of them commanding and observing parts of the system's input and output. The different agents sporadically exchange data with each other via a common bus network according to local event-triggering protocols. From these data, each agent estimates the complete dynamic state of the system and uses its estimate for feedback control. We propose a synthesis procedure for designing the agents' state estimators and the event triggering thresholds. The resulting distributed and event-based control system is guaranteed to be stable and to satisfy a predefined estimation performance criterion.
