Data-driven Soft Sensors in the Process Industry

    Get PDF
In the last two decades Soft Sensors established themselves as a valuable alternative to the traditional means for the acquisition of critical process variables, process monitoring and other tasks which are related to process control. This paper discusses characteristics of the process industry data which are critical for the development of data-driven Soft Sensors. These characteristics are common to a large number of process industry fields, like the chemical industry, bioprocess industry, steel industry, etc. The focus of this work is put on the data-driven Soft Sensors because of their growing popularity, already demonstrated usefulness and huge, though yet not completely realised, potential. A comprehensive selection of case studies covering the three most important Soft Sensor application fields, a general introduction to the most popular Soft Sensor modelling techniques as well as a discussion of some open issues in the Soft Sensor development and maintenance and their possible solutions are the main contributions of this work

Intensification of Ester Production in a Continuous Reactor

    Get PDF
Numerous continuous intensified reactors are now accessible on the market that offer enhanced thermal performances in a continuous reactor. Such reactors are then particularly suited to fast and highly exothermic reactions. In this paper, the ability to also manage a slow and equilibrated system, the methyl acetate esterification reaction, on condition of intensification in terms of design and operating conditions is presented. To achieve this purpose, a new kinetics model has been developed and validated from experiments carried out in a lab scale batch reactor. Implemented in a simulation framework, this model leads to an intensified design of the reactor and the associated operating conditions. All this intensification methodology has been supported and validated by experimental studies

Adaptive Model Predictive Control of Batch Systems

    Get PDF
Adaptive Model Predictive Control was applied on a semi-batch reactor and a batch distillation column. It was shown that AMPC is capable of regulating batch operations with product performances similar to that of NMPC and it requires a computational time significantly lower. Furthermore, the robustness of AMPC was tested introducing some process mismatch in the process model. Therefore, it was shown that some recursive tuning might be necessary to increase robustnes

Combining prior knowledge with data driven modeling of a batch distillation column including start-up

    Get PDF
This paper presents the development of a simple model which describes the product quality and production over time of an experimental batch distillation column, including start-up. The model structure is based on a simple physical framework, which is augmented with fuzzy logic. This provides a way to use prior knowledge about the dynamics, which have a general validity, while additional information about the specific column behavior is derived from measured process data. The model framework is applicable for a wide range of columns operating under a certain control policy. The model framework for the particular column under study makes a priori assumptions about the specific behavior superfluous. In addition, a detailed description of the internal dynamics is not required, which reduces modeling effort. Three different hybrid model structures are compared; the model that uses the available sources of information most effectively can be used to simulate production including part of the start-up by applying constant quality control. The purpose of this book is to offer readers important topics on the modeling, simulation, and optimization of distillation processes. The book is divided into four main sections: the first section is introduction to the topic, the second presents work related to distillation process modeling, the third deals with the modeling of phase equilibrium, one of the most important steps of distillation process modeling, and the the fourth looks at the reactive distillation process, a process that has been applied successfully to a number of applications and has been revealed as a promising strategy for a number of recent challenges

Multivariable Tracking Control of a Bioethanol Process under Uncertainties

    Get PDF
Bioethanol is one of the most studied alternative fuels nowadays. Due to its production process complexity and the low quality of the mathematical models that describe it, a reliable controller is needed to maximize the fuel production and minimize its environmental impact, even in the presence of uncertainty. Here, a controller for tracking optimal profiles considering model errors and external perturbations is proposed. This work is an improvement of a previously presented technique. To reduce the earlier mentioned uncertainties' effect during the fermentation, some tracking error integrators are added in the control action calculation. This simple modification ensures the tracking error convergence to zero, even in the presence of uncertainties (demonstration available). Different tests are carried out and a performance comparison with the original controller is shown to highlight improvements in the tracking error of up to 98% when integrators are incorporated. Furthermore, a classical PI controller is contrasted with the proposed techniques.Fil: Fernández Puchol, María Cecilia. Universidad Nacional de San Juan. Facultad de Ingeniería. From conceptual design to process design optimization: a review on flowsheet synthesis

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper presents the authors’ perspectives on some of the open questions and opportunities in Process Systems Engineering (PSE) focusing on process synthesis. A general overview of process synthesis is given, and the difference between Conceptual Design (CD) and Process Design (PD) is presented using an original ternary diagram. Then, a bibliometric analysis is performed to place major research team activities in the latter. An analysis of ongoing work is conducted and some perspectives are provided based on the analysis. This analysis includes symbolic knowledge representation concepts and inference techniques, i.e., ontology, that is believed to become useful in the future. Future research challenges that process synthesis will have to face, such as biomass transformation, shale production, response to spaceflight demand, modular plant design, and intermittent production of energy, are also discussed
