    Shape Perception of Clear Water in Photo-Realistic Images

    Light plays a vital role in the perception of transparency, depth and shape of liquids. The perception of the surfaces of liquids is made possible with an understanding of refraction of light and knowledge of the underlying texture geometry. Given this, what specific characteristics of the natural optical environment are essential to the perception of transparent liquids, specifically with respect to efficiency and realism? In this thesis, a light path triangulation method for the recovery of transparent surface shape and a system to estimate the perceived shape of any arbitrary-shaped object with a refractive surface are proposed. A psycho-physical experiment was conducted to investigate this using the perceived shape of water from stereo images using a real time stereoscopic 3-D depth gauge. The results suggest that people are able to consistently perceive shape of liquids from photo-realistic images and that regularity in underlying texture facilitates human judgement of surface shape

    Material Recognition Meets 3D Reconstruction : Novel Tools for Efficient, Automatic Acquisition Systems

    For decades, the accurate acquisition of geometry and reflectance properties has represented one of the major objectives in computer vision and computer graphics with many applications in industry, entertainment and cultural heritage. Reproducing even the finest details of surface geometry and surface reflectance has become a ubiquitous prerequisite in visual prototyping, advertisement or digital preservation of objects. However, today's acquisition methods are typically designed for only a rather small range of material types. Furthermore, there is still a lack of accurate reconstruction methods for objects with a more complex surface reflectance behavior beyond diffuse reflectance. In addition to accurate acquisition techniques, the demand for creating large quantities of digital contents also pushes the focus towards fully automatic and highly efficient solutions that allow for masses of objects to be acquired as fast as possible. This thesis is dedicated to the investigation of basic components that allow an efficient, automatic acquisition process. We argue that such an efficient, automatic acquisition can be realized when material recognition "meets" 3D reconstruction and we will demonstrate that reliably recognizing the materials of the considered object allows a more efficient geometry acquisition. Therefore, the main objectives of this thesis are given by the development of novel, robust geometry acquisition techniques for surface materials beyond diffuse surface reflectance, and the development of novel, robust techniques for material recognition. In the context of 3D geometry acquisition, we introduce an improvement of structured light systems, which are capable of robustly acquiring objects ranging from diffuse surface reflectance to even specular surface reflectance with a sufficient diffuse component. We demonstrate that the resolution of the reconstruction can be increased significantly for multi-camera, multi-projector structured light systems by using overlappings of patterns that have been projected under different projector poses. As the reconstructions obtained by applying such triangulation-based techniques still contain high-frequency noise due to inaccurately localized correspondences established for images acquired under different viewpoints, we furthermore introduce a novel geometry acquisition technique that complements the structured light system with additional photometric normals and results in significantly more accurate reconstructions. In addition, we also present a novel method to acquire the 3D shape of mirroring objects with complex surface geometry. The aforementioned investigations on 3D reconstruction are accompanied by the development of novel tools for reliable material recognition which can be used in an initial step to recognize the present surface materials and, hence, to efficiently select the subsequently applied appropriate acquisition techniques based on these classified materials. In the scope of this thesis, we therefore focus on material recognition for scenarios with controlled illumination as given in lab environments as well as scenarios with natural illumination that are given in photographs of typical daily life scenes. Finally, based on the techniques developed in this thesis, we provide novel concepts towards efficient, automatic acquisition systems

    Three-Dimensional Liquid-Vapor Interface Reconstruction from High-Speed Stereo Images during Pool Boiling

    A technique for reconstruction of liquid-gas interfaces based on high-speed stereo-imaging is applied to the liquid-vapor interfaces formed above a heated surface during pool boiling. Template matching is used for determining the correspondence of local features of the liquid-vapor interfaces between the two camera views. A sampling grid is overlaid on the reference image, and windows centered at each sampled pixel are compared with windows centered along the epipolar line in the target image to obtain a correlation signal. The three-dimensional coordinates of each matched pixel are determined via triangulation, which yields the physical world representation of the liquid-vapor interface. Liquid-vapor interface reconstruction is demonstrated during pool boiling for a range of heat fluxes. Textured mushroom-like vapor bubbles that are fed by multiple nucleation sites are formed close to the heated surface. Analysis of the temporal attributes of the interface distinguishes the transition with increasing heat flux from a mode in which vapor is released from the surface as a continuous plume to one dominated by the occurrence of intermittent vapor bursts. A characteristic morphology of the vapor mushroom formed during vapor burst events is identified. This liquid-vapor interface reconstruction technique is a time-resolved, flexible and non-invasive alternative to existing methods for phase-distribution mapping, and can be combined with other opticalbased diagnostic tools, such as tomographic particle image velocimetry. Vapor flow morphology characterization during pool boiling at high heat fluxes can be used to inform vapor removal strategies that delay the occurrence of critical heat flux during pool boiling

    Reconsidering light transport : acquisition and display of real-world reflectance and geometry

    In this thesis, we cover three scenarios that violate common simplifying assumptions about the nature of light transport. We begin with the first ingredient to any çD rendering: a geometry model. Most çD scanners require the object-of-interest to show diffuse refectance. The further a material deviates from the Lambertian model, the more likely these setups are to produce corrupted results. By placing a traditional laser scanning setup in a participating (in particular, fuorescent) medium, we have built a light sheet scanner that delivers robust results for a wide range of materials, including glass. Further investigating the phenomenon of fluorescence, we notice that, despite its ubiquity, it has received moderate attention in computer graphics. In particular, to date no datadriven reflectance models of fluorescent materials have been available. To describe the wavelength-shifling reflectance of fluorescent materials, we define the bispectral bidirectional reflectance and reradiation distribution function (BRRDF), for which we introduce an image-based measurement setup as well as an efficient acquisition scheme. Finally, we envision a computer display that showsmaterials instead of colours, and present a prototypical device that can exhibit anisotropic reflectance distributions similar to common models in computer graphics.In der Computergraphik und Computervision ist es unerlässlich, vereinfachende Annahmen über die Ausbreitung von Licht zumachen. In dieser Dissertation stellen wir drei Fälle vor, in denen diese nicht zutreffen. So wird die dreidimensionale Geometrie von Gegenständen oft mit Hilfe von Laserscannern vermessen und dabei davon ausgegangen, dass ihre Oberfläche diffus reflektiert. Dies ist bei den meisten Materialien jedoch nicht gegeben, so dass die Ergebnisse oft fehlerhaft sind. Indem wir das Objekt in einem fluoreszierenden Medium einbetten, kann ein klassischer CD-Scanner-Aufbau so modifiziert werden, dass er verlässliche Geometriedaten für Objekte aus verschiedensten Materialien liefert, einschließlich Glas. Auch die akkurate Nachbildung des Aussehens von Materialien ist wichtig für die photorealistische Bildsynthese. Wieder interessieren wir uns für Fluoreszenz, diesmal allerdings für ihr charakteristisches Erscheinungsbild, das in der Computergraphik bislang kaum Beachtung gefunden hat. Wir stellen einen bildbasierten Aufbau vor, mit dem die winkel- und wellenlängenabhängige Reflektanz fluoreszierender Oberflächen ausgemessen werden kann, und eine Strategie, um solche Messungen effizient abzuwickeln. Schließlich befassen wir uns mit der Idee, nicht nur Farben dynamisch anzuzeigen, sondern auch Materialien und ihr je nach Lichteinfall und Blickwinkel unterschiedliches Aussehen. Einer generellen Beschreibung des Problems folgt die konkrete Umsetzung in Formzweier Prototypen, die verschiedene Reflektanzverteilungen auf einer Oberfläche darstellen können

    A virtual object point model for the calibration of underwater stereo cameras to recover accurate 3D information

    The focus of this thesis is on recovering accurate 3D information from underwater images. Underwater 3D reconstruction differs significantly from 3D reconstruction in air due to the refraction of light. In this thesis, the concepts of stereo 3D reconstruction in air get extended for underwater environments by an explicit consideration of refractive effects with the aid of a virtual object point model. Within underwater stereo 3D reconstruction, the focus of this thesis is on the refractive calibration of underwater stereo cameras

    Revealing the Invisible: On the Extraction of Latent Information from Generalized Image Data

    The desire to reveal the invisible in order to explain the world around us has been a source of impetus for technological and scientific progress throughout human history. Many of the phenomena that directly affect us cannot be sufficiently explained based on the observations using our primary senses alone. Often this is because their originating cause is either too small, too far away, or in other ways obstructed. To put it in other words: it is invisible to us. Without careful observation and experimentation, our models of the world remain inaccurate and research has to be conducted in order to improve our understanding of even the most basic effects. In this thesis, we1 are going to present our solutions to three challenging problems in visual computing, where a surprising amount of information is hidden in generalized image data and cannot easily be extracted by human observation or existing methods. We are able to extract the latent information using non-linear and discrete optimization methods based on physically motivated models and computer graphics methodology, such as ray tracing, real-time transient rendering, and image-based rendering

    Integration of ground-penetrating radar and gamma-ray detectors for non-intrusive localisation of buried radioactive sources

    This thesis reports on the integration of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and gamma ray detectors to improve the non-intrusive localisation of radioactive wastes buried in porous materials such as soil and concrete. The research was undertaken in two phases. In the first phase, a new non-intrusive technique for retrieving the depth of a buried radioactive source from two-dimensional raster radiation images was developed. The images were obtained by moving a gamma-ray detector in discrete steps on the surface of the material volume in which the source is buried and measuring the gamma spectrum at each step. The depth of the source was then estimated by fitting the intensity values from the measured spectra to an approximate three-dimensional gamma-ray attenuation model. This procedure was first optimised using Monte Carlo simulations and then validated using experiments. The results showed that this method is able to estimate the depth of a 658 kBq caesium-137 point source buried up to 18 cm in each of sand, soil and gravel. However, the use of only gamma-ray data to estimate the depth of the sources requires foreknowledge of the density of the embedding material. This is usually III IV difficult without having recourse to intrusive density estimation methods or historical density values. Therefore, the second phase of the research employed integrated GPR and gamma ray detection to solve this density requirement problem. Firstly, four density models were investigated using a suite of materials and the best model was then used to develop the integration method. Results from numerical simulations showed that the developed integration method can simultaneously retrieve the soil density and the depth and radius of disk-shaped radioactive objects buried up to 20 cm in soil of varying conditions with a elative error of less than 10%. Therefore, the integration method eliminates the need for prior knowledge of the density of the embedding material. This work represents the first time data from these two systems i.e., GPR and gamma-ray detector, will be integrated for the detection and localisation of radioactive sources. Furthermore, the results from the developed methods confirm that an integrated GPR and gamma-ray detector system is a viable tool for non-intrusive localisation of buried radioactive sources. This will enable improved characterisation of buried radioactive wastes encountered during the decommissioning of nuclear sites and facilities

    Stereo-PIV Measurements of Vapor-Induced Flow Modifications in Confined Jet Impingement Boiling

    A single subcooled jet of water which undergoes boiling upon impingement on a discrete heat source is studied experimentally using time-resolved stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV). The impinging jet issues from a 3.75 mm diameter sharp-edged orifice in a confining orifice plate positioned 4 orifice diam- eters from the target surface. The behavior at jet Reynolds numbers of 5,0 0 0 and 15,0 0 0 is compared for a constant jet inlet subcooling of 10 °C. Fluorescent illumination allows for simultaneous imaging of both the flow tracers and the vapor bubbles in the flow. Flow structure, time-averaged velocities, and turbu- lence statistics are reported for the liquid regions within the confinement gap for a range of heat inputs at both Reynolds numbers, and the effect of the vapor generation on the flow is discussed. Vapor genera- tion from boiling is found to modify the liquid velocities and turbulence fluctuations in the confinement gap . Flow in the confinement gap is dominated by vapor flow, and the vapor bubbles disrupt both the vertical impinging jet and horizontal wall jet flow. Moreover, vapor bubbles are a significant source of turbulence kinetic energy and dissipation, with the bubbly regions above the heated surface experiencing the most intense turbulence modification. Spectral analysis indicates that a Strouhal number of 0.023 is characteristic of the interaction between bubbles and turbulent liquid jets
