    Qualitative mechanism models and the rationalization of procedures

    A qualitative, cluster-based approach to the representation of hydraulic systems is described and its potential for generating and explaining procedures is demonstrated. Many ideas are formalized and implemented as part of an interactive, computer-based system. The system allows for designing, displaying, and reasoning about hydraulic systems. The interactive system has an interface consisting of three windows: a design/control window, a cluster window, and a diagnosis/plan window. A qualitative mechanism model for the ORS (Orbital Refueling System) is presented to coordinate with ongoing research on this system being conducted at NASA Ames Research Center

    A grammatical specification of human-computer dialogue

    The Seeheim Model of human-computer interaction partitions an interactive application into a user-interface, a dialogue controller and the application itself. One of the formal techniques of implementing the dialogue controller is based on context-free grammars and automata. In this work, we modify an off-the-shelf compiler generator (YACC) to generate the dialogue controller. The dialogue controller is then integrated into the popular X-window system, to create an interactive-application generator. The actions of the user drive the automaton, which in turn controls the application

    Fast filtering and animation of large dynamic networks

    Detecting and visualizing what are the most relevant changes in an evolving network is an open challenge in several domains. We present a fast algorithm that filters subsets of the strongest nodes and edges representing an evolving weighted graph and visualize it by either creating a movie, or by streaming it to an interactive network visualization tool. The algorithm is an approximation of exponential sliding time-window that scales linearly with the number of interactions. We compare the algorithm against rectangular and exponential sliding time-window methods. Our network filtering algorithm: i) captures persistent trends in the structure of dynamic weighted networks, ii) smoothens transitions between the snapshots of dynamic network, and iii) uses limited memory and processor time.     A randomized trial to determine the impact on compliance of a psychophysical peripheral cue based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model

    Objective: Non-compliance in clinical studies is a significant issue, but causes remain unclear. Utilizing the Elaboration Likelihood Model of persuasion, this study assessed the psychophysical peripheral cue ‘Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) call frequency’ on compliance. Methods: 71 participants were randomized to once daily (OD), twice daily (BID) or three times daily (TID) call schedules over two weeks. Participants completed 30-item cognitive function tests at each call. Compliance was defined as proportion of expected calls within a narrow window (± 30 min around scheduled time), and within a relaxed window (− 30 min to + 4 h). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and pairwise comparisons adjusted by the Bonferroni correction. Results: There was a relationship between call frequency and compliance. Bonferroni adjusted pairwise comparisons showed significantly higher compliance (p = 0.03) for the BID (51.0%) than TID (30.3%) for the narrow window; for the extended window, compliance was higher (p = 0.04) with OD (59.5%), than TID (38.4%). Conclusion: The IVRS psychophysical peripheral cue call frequency supported the ELM as a route to persuasion. The results also support OD strategy for optimal compliance. Models suggest specific indicators to enhance compliance with medication dosing and electronic patient diaries to improve health outcomes and data integrity respectively

    XMPP and iDTV or how to make television a social medium

    Instant Messaging (IM) has the potential to become one of the killer applications for interactive Digital Television (iDTV) [12]. However, several factors make it difficult to provide a good implementation of IM services, among which the limited resources of a set-top box and the different user experience compared to computer environments. This paper proposes the XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) standard as a solution for implementing IM. When we compare XMPP with other technologies, it reveals itself to be very well adapted to the specific needs of iDTV middleware platforms like the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) [5]. Moreover, the use of XMPP doesn't limit itself to IM The flexible architecture of XMPP opens a window of opportunities like the ease of adding new interactive services. To demonstrate the possibilities of XMPP on MHP, an IM client -IM4MHP- is presented in this paper

    Interactive Image Display for the X Window System

    This report describes the program XV, which is an interactive color image display program for workstations and terminals running the X Window System. The program displays images saved in a variety of popular formats. It lets you arbitrarily stretch or compress the size of the image, rotate the image in 90-degree steps, flip the image around horizontal or vertical axes, crop off unwanted portions of the image, and measure pixel values and coordinates. Modified images can be saved in a variety of formats, or sent to a PostScript printer. The program also features extensive color manipulation functions, including a colormap editor, hue remapping, brightness and contrast adjustment, and individual mapping functions for the Red, Green, and Blue video channels, to correct for device-dependent non-linear color response

    Exploring Research through Design in Animal-Computer Interaction

    This paper explores Research through Design (RtD) as a potential methodology for developing new interactive experiences for animals. We present an example study from an on-going project and examine whether RtD offers an appropriate framework for developing knowledge in the context of Animal-Computer Interaction, as well as considering how best to document such work. We discuss the design journey we undertook to develop interactive systems for captive elephants and the extent to which RtD has enabled us to explore concept development and documentation of research. As a result of our explorations, we propose that particular aspects of RtD can help ACI researchers gain fresh perspectives on the design of technology-enabled devices for non-human animals. We argue that these methods of working can support the investigation of particular and complex situations where no idiomatic interactions yet exist, where collaborative practice is desirable and where the designed objects themselves offer a conceptual window for future research and development
