    Get PDF
This study seeks to identify and describe the character education contained in the story of Origins of Lampung. By utilizing the Lampung Origin Story as a source of research data, a qualitative descriptive methodology was used. Data analysis was carried out using content analysis techniques. Based on the analysis of the Lampung Origin story, six values of character education have been identified. Tolerance, independence, curiosity, friendly or communicative, social care, and responsibility are the values of character education. These values are the basis for the idea that folklore is not only used to introduce stories that were believed by the ancestors, but also can be used as a means of character education

Polity, leadership and lay responsibility in a changing church

The aim of the thesis is to develop a methodology from which to gain a fuller picture of what is happening in the areas of polity, leadership and lay responsibility in the particularity of a local parish church as it moves from first idea to actual completion of a major re-ordering of the church building ("The Story").By analyzing The Story through several heuristic methods, lines of investigation are opened up which are illuminative and deepen insight into it. Thus, the historical, economic and social background to the town and the description of the development of St. Catherine's Church provide a broad setting for The Story. Applying Edward Farley's development of phenomenology as a theological tool provides an overall methodology for the thesis and also opens up new theological dimensions to The Story. Recognising the limitations of Farley's methodology leads onto a) examination of the concept of symbol and of religious symbol, which themselves lead onto discussion of how church architecture (J.G. Davies), the sense of land (W. Brueggemann) and the sense of place (G. Lilburne) as symbol illuminate our understanding of the local church building in The Story; and b) examination of the general fields of canon law, political order (R.N. Adams) and social order (D. Katz & R.L. Kahn) and how they illuminate our understanding of the interaction of people in The Story. Because the several methods employed were developed as descriptions and explanations of general fields they are not expected to be applicable in the very detailed circumstances with which the thesis is concerned. Their worth is in how separately and interactively they open out and expose further layers of understanding of what is going on

Imagine being asked to evaluate your CEO
: Using the constructive controversy approach to teach gender and management in times of economic crisis

This article addresses the relationship between gender and management as intertwined discursive practices. Following a constructive controversial approach, we proposed to the students to complete a short story in which they have to give a feedback either to a fictitious female or to a male boss. The article has a dual aim since it offers a reflection on a teaching methodology suited to foster critical thinking in the classroom and analyzes the narratives so produced in search of what constitutes the students’ idea of “good management.” In positioning men/women CEO within a narrative, students enact a moral order that evaluates management in society. Their narratives reveal how the economic crisis has undermined the positive image of the male manager, while femaleness is emphasized for its anti-managerial imaginary. Moreover, the idea of what constitutes “good management” is constructed around an idea of care for both male and female CEOs

    Social representations: a revolutionary paradigm?

Against the prevailing view that progress in science is characterized by the progressive accumulation of knowledge, Thomas Kuhn’s Structure of Scientific Revolutions of 1962 introduced the idea of revolutionary paradigm shifts. For Kuhn, everyday science is normal science in which scientists are engaged in problem solving activities set in the context of a widely accepted paradigm that constitutes a broad acceptance of a fundamental theoretical framework, an agreement on researchable phenomena and on the appropriate methodology. But, on occasions normal science throws up vexing issues and anomalous results. In response, some scientists carry on regardless, while others begin to lose confidence in the paradigm and look to other options, namely rival paradigms. As more and more scientists switch allegiance to the rival paradigm, the revolution gathers pace, supported by the indoctrination of students through lectures, academic papers and textbooks. In response to critics, including Lakatos who suggested that his depiction reduced scientific progress to mob psychology, Kuhn offered a set of criteria that contributed to the apparent ‘gestalt switch’ from the old to the new paradigm. But that is another story, as indeed is Kuhn’s claim that the social sciences are pre-paradigmatic – in other words, that the only consensus is that there is no consensus

    The Right Way

I ask why humans are smarter than other primates, and I hypothesize that an important part of the answer lies in the Inner Language Hypothesis, a prerequisite to what I call the Strong Story Hypothesis, which holds that story telling and understanding have a central role in human intelligence. Next, I introduce the Directed Perception Hypothesis, which holds that we derive much of our common sense, including the common sense required in story understanding, by deploying our perceptual apparatus on real and imagined events. Both the Strong Story Hypothesis and the Directed Perception Hypothesis become more valuable in light of our social nature, an idea captured in the Social Animal Hypothesis. Then, after discussing methodology, I describe the representations and methods embodied in Genesis, a story-understanding system that analyzes stories ranging from pr®ecis of Shakespeare’s plots to descriptions of conflicts in cyberspace. Genesis works with short story summaries, provided in English, together with low-level common-sense rules and higher-level concept patterns, likewise expressed in English. Using only a small collection of common-sense rules and concept patterns, Genesis demonstrates several story-understanding capabilities, such as determining that both Macbeth and the 2007 Russia-Estonia Cyberwar involve revenge, even though neither the word revenge nor any of its synonyms are mentioned

    Acousmatic Storytelling

The purpose of this article is to explore the idea of relating storytelling with acousmatic music in the creation of a hybrid vehicle for transmitting stories. The concept of acousmatic storytelling is introduced, illustrated by the example of one of my own works which was created with the elements and techniques of storytelling as its conceptual basis. The article continues to investigate concepts of acousmatic storytelling in works from the repertoire of electroacoustic music, with composers such as Ferrari, Westerkamp, Derbyshire, Cousins and Young providing especially pertinent examples. Acousmatic storytelling integrates interviews, archival recordings, soundscape recordings, sonic icons and music quotations; the microphone becomes a time machine, ‘thought capturer’ and a conduit for conveying cultural information, elements which, combined with the sonic world composed in the studio, create a hybrid form. The concepts introduced in this article are useful for all those working with recorded sound, offering an approach to sonic creativity based on storytelling techniques and the way we experience past events through memory and sound recording. Acousmatic storytelling transmits a unique version of a story to the mind of the listener, who participates in the creation of the story and acts as co-creator of that story as experienced. In applying the methodology of interviews as well as researching past events and ‘writing’ about them, acousmatic storytelling composers can also be seen as historians and journalists

Effective Tax Rates on Capital in New Zealand - Changes 1972-1998

Effective tax rates (rather than statutory tax rates) on capital assets can give us an idea of the level of distortion imposed on investment by the tax system. This paper describes a study of effective tax rates on different types of capital assets in New Zealand using the King-Fullerton methodology. While the usual caveats of the application of King-Fullerton methodology apply, a clear story emerges from the data. The model demonstrates the severely negative impact of inflation, especially under the old tax regime and at the high rates of inflation seen in the late 1970s and 80s. By comparison, the current tax system is shown to be rather consistent across different types of capital assets and means of financing. The low inflation of the past few years has contributed to the improvement, but this study shows that the new tax regime performs better even under equalised circumstances (e.g. zero inflation) for the whole period under consideration.

Governance in the United States has been the domain of men since the idea of democracy and independence from England was in its infancy. The systematic oppression and exclusion of persons of color and women was the backdrop upon which the United States was founded. Many continue to experience conflict and struggle in their efforts to gain and maintain civil rights and seek personal and professional experiences free from marginalization and oppression. This purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the lived experiences group of Latinas who have been elected or appointed to public office with an emphasis critical variables of race, ethnicity, immigration story, gender, language, and socioeconomic class as defined by Latino Critical Race Theory and Chicana Feminist Theory. The study employs Testimonio as methodology to explore oppressive and marginalizing influences throughout the personal and professional lives of seven Latinas in elected or appointed office. The use of constant comparative, iterative data analysis and testimonio methodology give voice to a collective narrative and is intended to act as demonstration of resistance to hegemony in white, male-dominated institutions of government. The voices of the women in this study tell a cohesive story about the centrality of the family unit in Latino culture with emphasis on familismo and mariansmo and the traditional gender roles of women and girls in Latino families. Furthermore, the testimonios of the women describe oppression and marginalization suffered in personal and professional settings in the form of racism, sexism, misogyny, and sexual harassment. Despite these barriers, findings revealed that they sought public office in response to a call to public service, social justice, and altruism, especially for vulnerable persons who could not defend themselves from inequity or unfairness. The testimonios of the seven women in this study tell a story of affection for tradition and love of family. Additionally, the testimonios reveal a shift toward women assuming prominent roles in the household and in the workplace all while navigating oppressive and marginalizing racial, gendered, and cultured experiences. The voices of the Latinas tell the story of how they adhere to dearly held cultural values and a profound fondness for tradition while, at the same time, positioning themselves as confident and capable elected officials
