    Wearable device to assist independent living.

    Older people increasingly want to remain living independently in their own homes. The aim of the ENABLE project is to develop a wearable device that can be used both within and outside of the home to support older people in their daily lives and which can monitor their health status, detect potential problems, provide activity reminders and offer communication and alarm services. In order to determine the specifications and functionality required for development of the device user surveys and focus groups were undertaken and use case analysis and scenario modeling carried out. The project has resulted in the development of a wrist worn device and mobile phone combination that can support and assist older and vulnerable wearers with a range of activities and services both inside and outside of their homes. The device is currently undergoing pilot trials in five European countries.     The model of the formation of the individual's spiritual intelligence in the context of the processes of radicalization of modern youth

    The purpose of the article is to identify and build a mental model of the formation of the spiritual intelligence of a young individual. The research methodology was a humanistic approach, which made it possible to pay priority attention to the problems of a young individual, his/her search for the meaning of life and the determination of value orientations, as well as the process of modernizing the directions of society's activities and the development of new approaches to the formation of the spiritual intelligence of a young person. The main results of the study were: the identification of relevant factors in the 21st century, the consequences of the negative impact on the spiritual intelligence of an individual with an immature worldview system lead him/her to enter the path of radicalization; the creation of a mental model that reveals the dependence of the transformation of the spiritual intelligence of a young individual, and, consequently, the vector of his/her behaviorism from the influence of external and internal factors, as well as the construction of a mathematical model describing the process of its functioning. The results obtained in the course of the study will provide significant assistance to state authorities and law enforcement agencies in preventing the radicalization of young people in the modern world and will allow building a system of youth policy that is adequate to a democratic society

    New directions in the study of family names

    This paper explores and explains recent radical developments in resources and methodology for studying the origins, cultural associations, and histories of family names (also called ‘surnames’). It summarizes the current state of the art and outlines new resources and procedures that are now becoming available. It shows how such innovations can enable the correction of errors in previous work and improve the accuracy of dictionaries of family names, with a focus on the English-speaking world. Developments such as the digitization of archives are having a profound effect, not only on the interpretation and understanding of traditional, ‘established’ family names and their histories, but also of names in other languages and other cultures. There are literally millions of different family names in the world today, many of which have never been studied at all. What are good criteria for selection of entries in a dictionary of family names, and what can be said about them? What is the nature of the evidence? How stable (or how variable) are family names over time? What are the effects of factors such as migration? What is the relationship between family names and geographical locations, given that people can and do move around? What is the relationship between traditional philological and historical approaches to the subject and statistical analysis of newly available digitized data? The paper aims to contribute to productive discussion of such questions

    NarDis:Narrativizing Disruption -How exploratory search can support media researchers to interpret ‘disruptive’ media events as lucid narratives

    This project investigates how CLARIAH’s exploratory search and linked open data (LO D) browser DIVE+ supports media researchers to construct narratives about events, especially ‘disruptive’ events such as terrorist attacks and natural disasters. This project approaches this question by conducting user studies to examine how researchers use and create narratives with exploratory search tools, particularly DIVE+, to understand media events. These user studies were organized as workshops (using co-creation as an iterative approach to map search practices and storytelling data, including: focus groups & interviews; tasks & talk aloud protocols; surveys/questionnaires; and research diaries) and included more than 100 (digital) humanities researchers across Europe. Insights from these workshops show that exploratory search does facilitate the development of new research questions around disruptive events. DIVE+ triggers academic curiosity, by suggesting alternative connections between entities. Beside learning about research practices of (digital) humanities researchers and how these can be supported with digital tools, the pilot also culminated in improvements to the DIVE+ browser. The pilot helped optimize the browser’s functionalities, making it possible for users to annotate paths of search narratives, and save these in CLARIAH’s overarching, personalised, user space. The pilot was widely promoted at (inter)national conferences, and DIVE+ won the international LO DLAM (Linked Open Data in Libraries, Archives and Museums) Challenge Grand Prize in Venice (2017)
