This is the post-print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2008 ElsevierThe importance of the user perspective to the wireless information access experience cannot be understated: simply put, users will not indulge in devices that are perceived to be difficult to use and in technologies that do not offer quality infotainment – combined information and entertainment – content. In this paper, we investigate the impact that mobile devices have on the user wireless infotainment access experience in practice. To this end, we have undertaken an empirical study placed in a ‘real-world’ setting, in which participants undertook typical infotainment access tasks on three different wireless-enabled mobile devices: a laptop, a personal digital assistant and a head mounted display device. Results show that, with the exception of participants’ level of self-consciousness when using such devices in public environments, the user wireless information access experience is generally unaffected by device type. Location was shown, though, to be a significant factor when users engage in tasks such as listening to online music or navigation. Whilst the interaction between device and environment was found to influence entertainment-related tasks in our experiments, the informational ones were not affected. However, the interaction effects between device and user type was found to affect both types of tasks. Lastly, a user’s particular computing experience was shown to influence the perceived ease of wireless information access only in the case of online searching, irrespective of whether this is done for primarily informational purposes or entertainment ones

ABSTRACT: Securing mobile and smartphone data is vital issue in the communication industry and schemes that could be used to secure mobiles are not easy to implement and efficient so far. Securing data includes the messaging and additional application services on mobile devices. The applications available in market are not very reliable and surfing from issues of memory and resources. Additionally the security measures provided by smart phones are not enough to maintain the privacy of the data stored on the phone or protect it from falling in the wrong hands in case of mobile theft. Currently the security on smartphones is generally based on passwords and only effort made to secure the passwords is removing the dependency of characters and numbers. Due to the lack of security in small devices the need of proper security of data is required. The method that is able to secure data in efficient way and very hard to cheat other than the passwords, can be found by applying cryptography encryption algorithms. These encryption algorithms are very easy solutions to secure the data and as well not easy to break the security. There are two types of encryptions i.e. symmetric and asymmetric, in which the asymmetric cryptography encryption is better as it do not play with the security of data by using only one sided key because one sided keys are generally used in less secure areas. There are products available in market based on encryption but even those products are based on symmetric cryptography encryptions and we found that asymmetric cryptography algorithms are more secure to deploy on smartphones additionally we found that among them only one algorithm is powerful enough to deploy on these devices. These findings are based upon the comparison of algorithms in terms of memory and resources because most asymmetric encryption algorithms need large memory and heavy processor to use resources. We finally found that Elliptic curve cryptography algorithm is best among them to deploy on mobile devices as they have limited memory and resources

Halal supply chain: mediating role of intention on manufacturer’s behaviour to utilize halal transportation services

As one of the world's major Muslim countries, Malaysia is seeing a growth in demand for halal products. Muslim consumers think that eating halal food is a religious responsibility for all Muslims. The increased awareness of the importance of halal products creates a sizable market opportunity for producers to make their halal products. In accordance with this, halal transportation services are a critical component of halal product manufacturing. Since halal is distinct and entails intricate regulations and executions, it requires significant expenditure. As with any other supply chain, transportation costs will be passed to end-users, typically customers, increasing the final product's price. While studies on Muslim customers and their preferences for halal products are somewhat widespread, studies on Muslim customers' preferences for halal transportation could still be considered as novel. The purpose of this research is to apply the hybrid theories of TRA and TPB as popular theories due to their relative simplicity and flexibility, as well as their effectiveness in forecasting customer intention and actual behaviour to use halal transportation services. From the 1729 manufacturers initially listed, 130 manufacturers were randomly chosen from the food and beverages operators in the Klang Valley listed on the Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) website. 3 sets of questionnaires were distributed to each halal certified manufacturer in this survey to maintain homogeneity among the halal food and beverages manufacturers. A total of 390 people were sent the questionnaires. Foreign multinationals, Malaysian multinationals, Small and Medium Enterprises (SME), and bigger enterprises were the four types of companies that participated in this study. This study was designed to provide a better knowledge of Muslim customers' purchasing behavior regarding Halal transportation and other Halal supply chain operations. Additionally, this study may assist policymakers in forecasting consumer behavior toward Halal transportation and enhance their business strategies through sharia compliance to better serve Muslim consumers

Point of Care Healthcare Quality Control for Patients Using Mobile Devices

    Get PDF
The advances made in the domain of mobile telecommunications over the last decade offer great potential for developments in many areas. One such area that can benefit from mobile communications is telemedicine, which is the provision of medical assistance, in one form or another, to patients who are geographically separated from the healthcare provider. When a person is ill, individual attention from medical professionals is of the utmost importance until they have returned to full health. However, people who suffer with long term and chronic illnesses may need life long care and often must manage their condition at home. Many chronically ill patients manage their condition themselves and perform ‘self-testing’ with Point of Care Test (POCT) equipment as part of this condition management. When a specimen sample is analysed at home with a POCT device, a result is available to the patient almost immediately, but the result cannot be proven to be plausible for the patient unless it is validated by the hospital systems. In addition to this the hospital is unaware of the patients condition and progress between hospital visits. This research addresses some of the issues and problems that fact patients who use POCT equipment to ‘self-manage’ their condition at home. Using mobile phone technologies and the Java platform, three alternative methods for providing patients with a service of POCT result validation and storage was designed. The implementation and test of these systems, proves that a mobile phone solution to the issues associated with patient self-testing is possible and can greatly contribute to the quality of patient care

Mobile learning is the attainment of any knowledge or skill through using mobile technology, anywhere, anytime (Hashemi et al. 2477). Hashemi and Ghasemi also state that mobile phones are one of the most successful technologies in the past two decades (2947). More and more educators are using mobile phones as an educational tool. Second Language Acquisition has also been redefined due to the advent of Mobile learning and text-messaging. Khazaie and Ketabi explain that the value of deploying technology at the service of learning and teaching seems to be both self-evident and unavoidable (174). There are many studies of using text-message technologies in education and in Second Language Leaning of English, but these publications do not provide any evidence of the use of Mobile technologies or text-messaging in Second Language Acquisition of Spanish. This paper presents a study using text-message in the teaching and learning of Spanish Vocabulary in a second semester Spanish course. It compared a Control group that used a conventional paper based task learning method and an Experiment group that used text-messaging leaning method to learn twelve Spanish Vocabulary words. The results from the study show that text-messaging can be used as an effective Spanish Vocabulary language learning tool and students enjoyed the use of this vocabulary learning method. The finding in this study could perform as a roadmap in creating more studies that involve the use of mobile learning and text-messaging in the learning of Spanish vocabulary and Spanish as a Second Language
