    Equity in the Digital Age: How Health Information Technology Can Reduce Disparities

    While enormous medical and technological advancements have been made over the last century, it is only very recently that there have been similar rates of development in the field of health information technology (HIT).This report examines some of the advancements in HIT and its potential to shape the future health care experiences of consumers. Combined with better data collection, HIT offers signi?cant opportunities to improve access to care, enhance health care quality, and create targeted strategies that help promote health equity. We must also keep in mind that technology gaps exist, particularly among communities of color, immigrants, and people who do not speak English well. HIT implementation must be done in a manner that responds to the needs of all populations to make sure that it enhances access, facilitates enrollment, and improves quality in a way that does not exacerbate existing health disparities for the most marginalized and underserved

    Pediatric Asthma Telemonitoring: Literature, Theory, and Application to Practice

    Asthma is one of the most prevalent and costly chronic diseases faced by Americans today. It is marked by inflammation and hyperresponsiveness of the airways which fluctuates, often unpredictably, in response to triggers. As such, it causes particular challenges symptom management, especially on the part of the patient who is tasked with dealing with these frequent fluctuations for months at a time between regularly scheduled health care appointments. This is further complicated when the patient is a child, and symptoms must be interpreted and managed second-hand by a caregiver. Uncertainty about how to manage symptoms, as well as minimization of symptoms, contributes to delays in seeking treatment, leading to higher acuity visits, increased costs, and poorer outcomes. Meanwhile the field of telemonitoring is evolving. New technologies offer patients and providers novel ways of communicating between visits. This is supported by telemonitoring literature and theoretical frameworks, which will be addressed in this manuscript. It is the assertion of this project that asthma symptom telemonitoring holds promise as a way for patients to conveniently and more adequately manage symptom fluctuations from home. The first paper in this manuscript surveys the existing literature on asthma telemonitoring modalities. The second paper examines the problem of symptom minimization and uncertainty through the framework of Symptom Management Theory. Finally, the third paper is a technical report describing a pilot study that used the AsthmaChecker app among children with asthma and their caregivers to assess linkages to Symptom Management Theory and Diffusion of Innovation Theory. This project and these writings offer new insights into the emerging field of telemedicine and its potential usefulness in the context of pediatric asthma management

    The objective of the MOSAIC project is to accelerate innovation in Mobile Worker Support Environments. For that purpose MOSAIC develops visions and illustrative scenarios for future collaborative workspaces involving mobile and location-aware working. Analysis of the scenarios is input to the process of road mapping with the purpose of developing strategies for R&D leading to deployment of innovative mobile work technologies and applications across different domains. One of the application domains where MOSAIC is active is health and wellbeing. This paper builds on another paper submitted to this same conference, which presents and discusses health care and wellbeing specific scenarios. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-Archiving.Demographic trends with extended life expectancy are placing increasing pressures on the UK state-funded healthcare budgets. eHealth innovations are expected to facilitate new avenues for cost-effective and safe methods of care, for enabling elderly people to live independently at their own homes and for assisting governments to cope with the demographic challenges. However, despite heavy investment in these innovations, large-scale deployment of eHealth continues to face significant obstacles, and lack of sustainable business models (BMs) is widely regarded as part of the greatest barriers. Through various empirical methods that include facilitated workshops, case studies of relevant organizations, and user groups, this paper investigates the reasons the private market of eHealth innovations has proved difficult to establish, and therefore it develops a framework for sustainable BMs that could elimiesnate barriers of eHealth innovation commercialization. Results of the study suggest that to achieve sustainable commercialization, BM frameworks and innovation diffusion characteristics should be considered complements but not substitutes.Peer reviewe

    Healthcare systems worldwide need to improve health outcomes while reducing costs. Increasing demand for chronic disease management, such as pulmonary disease, is driving digital transformation in healthcare. The Kata® inhalation app aims to improve patients' inhalation techniques through a data-based algorithm. This study aims to classify Portugal’s proneness to healthcare digitalization. Specifically, it investigates to which extent Portugal is lagging compared to digital pioneers and how it can keep up with advancements in a rapidly evolving technological world. The results suggest that Portugal is a positive example of eHealth but its main challenges are patients’ low digital trust and inoperability across infrastructures and health subsystems
