Component-aware Orchestration of Cloud-based Enterprise Applications, from TOSCA to Docker and Kubernetes
Enterprise IT is currently facing the challenge of coordinating the
management of complex, multi-component applications across heterogeneous cloud
platforms. Containers and container orchestrators provide a valuable solution
to deploy multi-component applications over cloud platforms, by coupling the
lifecycle of each application component to that of its hosting container. We
hereby propose a solution for going beyond such a coupling, based on the OASIS
standard TOSCA and on Docker. We indeed propose a novel approach for deploying
multi-component applications on top of existing container orchestrators, which
allows to manage each component independently from the container used to run
it. We also present prototype tools implementing our approach, and we show how
we effectively exploited them to carry out a concrete case study
Enabling modular design of an application-level auto-scaling and orchestration framework using tosca-based application description templates
This paper presents a novel approach to writing TOSCA templates for application reusability and portability in a modular auto-scaling and orchestration framework (MiCADO). The approach defines cloud resources as well as application containers in a flexible and generic way, and allows for those definitions to be extended with specific properties related to a desired container orchestrator chosen at deployment time. The approach is demonstrated in a proof-of-concept where only a minor change was required to a previously used application template in order to achieve the successful deployment and lifecycle management of the popular web authoring tool Wordpress on a new realization of the MiCADO framework featuring a different container orchestrator
Distributed service orchestration : eventually consistent cloud operation and integration
Both researchers and industry players are facing the same obstacles when entering the big data field. Deploying and testing distributed data technologies requires a big up-front investment of both time and knowledge. Existing cloud automation solutions are not well suited for managing complex distributed data solutions. This paper proposes a distributed service orchestration architecture to better handle the complex orchestration logic needed in these cases. A novel service-engine based approach is proposed to cope with the versatility of the individual components. A hybrid integration approach bridges the gap between cloud modeling languages, automation artifacts, image-based schedulers and PaaS solutions. This approach is integrated in the distributed data experimentation platform Tengu, making it more flexible and robust
ClouNS - A Cloud-native Application Reference Model for Enterprise Architects
The capability to operate cloud-native applications can generate enormous
business growth and value. But enterprise architects should be aware that
cloud-native applications are vulnerable to vendor lock-in. We investigated
cloud-native application design principles, public cloud service providers, and
industrial cloud standards. All results indicate that most cloud service
categories seem to foster vendor lock-in situations which might be especially
problematic for enterprise architectures. This might sound disillusioning at
first. However, we present a reference model for cloud-native applications that
relies only on a small subset of well standardized IaaS services. The reference
model can be used for codifying cloud technologies. It can guide technology
identification, classification, adoption, research and development processes
for cloud-native application and for vendor lock-in aware enterprise
architecture engineering methodologies
TOSCA-based orchestration of complex clusters at the IaaS level
[EN] This paper describes the adoption and extension of the TOSCA standard by the INDIGO-DataCloud project for the definition and deployment of complex computing clusters together with the required support in both OpenStack and OpenNebula, carried out in close collaboration with industry partners such as IBM. Two examples of these clusters are described in this paper, the definition of an elastic computing cluster to support the Galaxy bioinformatics application where the nodes are dynamically added and removed from the cluster to adapt to the workload, and the definition of an scalable Apache Mesos cluster for the execution of batch jobs and support for long-running services. The coupling of TOSCA with Ansible Roles to perform automated installation has resulted in the definition of high-level, deterministic templates to provision complex computing clusters across different Cloud sites. The authors would like to thank the European Commission for the financial support for project

Containerisation and the PaaS Cloud
Containerisation is widely discussed as a lightweight virtualisation solution. Apart from exhibiting benefits over traditional virtual machines in the cloud, containers are especially relevant for Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) clouds to manage and orchestrate applications through containers as an application packaging mechanism. We discuss the requirements that arise from having to facilitate applications through distributed multi-cloud platforms
A Cloud-Edge Orchestration Platform for the Innovative Industrial Scenarios of the IoTwins Project
The concept of digital twins has growing more and more interest not only in the academic field but also among industrial environments thanks to the fact that the Internet of Things has enabled its cost-effective implementation. Digital twins (or digital models) refer to a virtual representation of a physical product or process that integrate data from various sources such as data APIs, historical data, embedded sensors and open data, giving to the manufacturers an unprecedented view into how their products are performing. The EU-funded IoTwins project plans to build testbeds for digital twins in order to run real-time computation as close to the data origin as possible (e.g., IoT Gateway or Edge nodes), and whilst batch-wise tasks such as Big Data analytics and Machine Learning model training are advised to run on the Cloud, where computing resources are abundant. In this paper, the basic concepts of the IoTwins project, its reference architecture, functionalities and components have been presented and discussed
A Self-managed Mesos Cluster for Data Analytics with QoS Guarantees
[EN] This article describes the development of an automated configuration of a software platform for Data Analytics that supports horizontal and vertical elasticity to guarantee meeting a specific deadline. It specifies all the components, software dependencies and configurations required to build up the cluster, and analyses the deployment times of different instances, as well as the horizontal and vertical elasticity. The approach followed builds up self-managed hybrid clusters that can deal with different workloads and network requirements. The article describes the structure of the recipes, points out to public repositories where the code is available and discusses the limitations of the approach as well as the results of several experiments. The work presented in this article has been partially funded by a research grant from the regional government of the Comunitat Valenciana (Spain), co-funded by the European Union ERDF funds (European Regional Development Fund) of the Comunitat Valenciana 2014-2020, with reference IDIFEDER/2018/032 (High-Performance Algorithms for the Modelling, Simulation and early Detection of diseases in Personalized Medicine). INDIGO-Datacloud: foundations and architectural description of a Platform as a Service oriented to scientific computing
Software Engineering.-- et al.In this paper we describe the architecture of a Platform as a Service (PaaS) oriented to computing and data analysis. In order to clarify the choices we made, we explain the features using practical examples, applied to several known usage patterns in the area of HEP computing. The proposed architecture is devised to provide researchers with a unified view of distributed computing infrastructures, focusing in facilitating seamless access. In this respect the Platform is able to profit from the most recent developments for computing and processing large amounts of data, and to
exploit current storage and preservation technologies, with the appropriate mechanisms to ensure security and privacy.INDIGO-DataCloud is co-founded by the Horizon 2020Framework Programme.Peer reviewe
