    Mobile app recommendations using deep learning and big data

    Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Statistics and Information Management, specialization in Marketing Research e CRMRecommender systems were first introduced to solve information overload problems in enterprises. Over the last decades, recommender systems have found applications in several major websites related to e-commerce, music and video streaming, travel and movie sites, social media and mobile app stores. Several methods have been proposed over the years to build recommender systems. The most popular approaches are based on collaborative filtering techniques, which leverage the similarities between consumer tastes. But the current state of the art in recommender systems is deep-learning methods, which can leverage not only item consumption data but also content, context, and user attributes. Mobile app stores generate data with Big Data properties from app consumption data, behavioral, geographic, demographic, social network and user-generated content data, which includes reviews, comments and search queries. In this dissertation, we propose a deep-learning architecture for recommender systems in mobile app stores that leverage most of these data sources. We analyze three issues related to the impact of the data sources, the impact of embedding layer pretraining and the efficiency of using Kernel methods to improve app scoring at a Big Data scale. An experiment is conducted on a Portuguese Android app store. Results suggest that models can be improved by combining structured and unstructured data. The results also suggest that embedding layer pretraining is essential to obtain good results. Some evidence is provided showing that Kernel-based methods might not be efficient when deployed in Big Data contexts

    A recommender system for e-retail

    The e-retail sector in South Africa has a significant opportunity to capture a large portion of the country's retail industry. Central to seizing this opportunity is leveraging the advantages that the online setting affords. In particular, the e-retailer can offer an extremely large catalogue of products; far beyond what a traditional retailer is capable of supporting. However, as the catalogue grows, it becomes increasingly difficult for a customer to efficiently discover desirable products. As a consequence, it is important for the e-retailer to develop tools that automatically explore the catalogue for the customer. In this dissertation, we develop a recommender system (RS), whose purpose is to provide suggestions for products that are most likely of interest to a particular customer. There are two primary contributions of this dissertation. First, we describe a set of six characteristics that all effective RS's should possess, namely; accuracy, responsiveness, durability, scalability, model management, and extensibility. Second, we develop an RS that is capable of serving recommendations in an actual e-retail environment. The design of the RS is an attempt to embody the characteristics mentioned above. In addition, to show how the RS supports model selection, we present a proof-of-concept experiment comparing two popular methods for generating recommendations that we implement for this dissertation, namely, implicit matrix factorisation (IMF) and Bayesian personalised ranking (BPR)

During the implementation and planning phases, designers have to cope with several issues and challenges that need proper attention. This thesis aims to show the issues and challenges in developing high-quality recommender systems. A paper solves a current research problem in the field of job recommendations using a distributed algorithmic framework built on top of Spark for parallel computation which allows the algorithm to scale linearly with the growing number of users. The final solution consists of two different recommenders which could be utilised for different purposes. The first method is mainly driven by latent topics among users, meanwhile the second technique utilises a latent factor algorithm that directly addresses the preference-confidence paradigm

While these applications of machine learning algorithms have been proven beneficial in various fields, many shortcomings have also been highlighted, such as the lack of benchmark datasets, the inability to learn from small datasets, the cost of architecture, adversarial attacks, and imbalanced datasets. On the other hand, new and emerging algorithms, such as deep learning, one-shot learning, continuous learning, and generative adversarial networks, have successfully solved various tasks in these fields. Therefore, applying these new methods to life-critical missions is crucial, as is measuring these less-traditional algorithms' success when used in these fields

    Predicting the popularity of posts on social networks has taken on significant importance in recent years, and several social media management tools now offer solutions to improve and optimize the quality of published content and to enhance the attractiveness of companies and organizations. Scientific research has recently moved in this direction, with the aim of exploiting advanced techniques such as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, etc., to support such tools. In light of the above, in this work we aim to address the challenge of predicting the popularity of a future post on Instagram, by defining the problem as a classification task and by proposing an original approach based on Gradient Boosting and feature engineering, which led us to promising experimental results. The proposed approach exploits big data technologies for scalability and efficiency, and it is general enough to be applied to other social media as well

    Big Data mining and machine learning techniques applied to real world scenarios

    Data mining techniques allow the extraction of valuable information from heterogeneous and possibly very large data sources, which can be either structured or unstructured. Unstructured data, such as text files, social media, mobile data, are much more than structured data, and grow at a higher rate. Their high volume and the inherent ambiguity of natural language make unstructured data very hard to process and analyze. Appropriate text representations are therefore required in order to capture word semantics as well as to preserve statistical information, e.g. word counts. In Big Data scenarios, scalability is also a primary requirement. Data mining and machine learning approaches should take advantage of large-scale data, exploiting abundant information and avoiding the curse of dimensionality. The goal of this thesis is to enhance text understanding in the analysis of big data sets, introducing novel techniques that can be employed for the solution of real world problems. The presented Markov methods temporarily achieved the state-of-the-art on well-known Amazon reviews corpora for cross-domain sentiment analysis, before being outperformed by deep approaches in the analysis of large data sets. A noise detection method for the identification of relevant tweets leads to 88.9% accuracy in the Dow Jones Industrial Average daily prediction, which is the best result in literature based on social networks. Dimensionality reduction approaches are used in combination with LinkedIn users' skills to perform job recommendation. A framework based on deep learning and Markov Decision Process is designed with the purpose of modeling job transitions and recommending pathways towards a given career goal. Finally, parallel primitives for vendor-agnostic implementation of Big Data mining algorithms are introduced to foster multi-platform deployment, code reuse and optimization
