Cultural values and behavior in dictator, ultimatum, trust games: an experimental study

    Get PDF
We explain laboratory behavior in the dictator, ultimatum and trust games based on two cultural dimensions adopted from social and cultural anthropology: grid and group, which translate into reciprocity and altruism, respectively, in such games. Altruism and reciprocity characteristics are measured for each individual using selected items from the World Values Survey. We find that altruism and reciprocity attributes systematically affect behavior. Subjects with higher altruism scores offer more, accept lower offers and return more. Subjects with higher reciprocity scores are more willing to punish violators of norms by rejecting offers more often, dividing fewer dollars and returning fewer dollars in the ultimatum and trust games.laboratory experiment, two-person game, survey, culture

Valer y valor. Una exhumación de la teoría del valor para reflexionar sobre la desigualdad y la diferencia en relación con la escuela

This essay examines the anthropological concept of value in the light of a set of classic texts. In comparing the treatment of this concept within the tradition of studies in social and cultural anthropology with the frequent usage it has had in the field of educational studies, the need for a holistic view of the concept comes to light. This examination is particularly relevant to understanding the elements to pay attention to when we think about the field of values in so-called “education for citizenship”. A concise definition of the concept of value will be proposed in this essay. In addition, the plot of this text is built with two main arguments. On the one hand, a theory of value oriented by the accumulated knowledge in social and cultural anthropology is actually a theory of the space of social relationships. On the other hand, is impossible to build a model of moral school education for citizenship without considering that such a proposal of moral values must be followed by a thorough examination of the operations that the school itself puts into practice on a local field of value

Abstract This essay was written in response to a request for a discipline-based reflection on the future implementation of a program of study in social and cultural anthropology in secondary education, and attempts to frame an answer to the following question: What could be the specific contribution of social and cultural anthropology to secondary school students' intellectual training, including their development of judgment and sensitivity? The article focuses on the experience of the concrete, the concepts of reification, ethnocentrism and exoticism, and the notion of "cultural identity". A final section deals with what is —from the author's point of view— the most basic contribution of the discipline: an agency-based concept of culture. Keywords:anthropology as an academic discipline, anthropology and secondary education, culture and identity, culture and agency.Este ensayo responde al encargo de ofrecer una reflexión disciplinar para una futura implantación de un plan de estudios en antropología social y cultural en enseñanza secundaria. Emotions, power, and environmental conflict : Expanding the 'emotional turn' in political ecology

Unidad de excelencia María de Maeztu CEX2019-000940-MBuilding on the framework of emotional political ecology, we seek to expand ways of studying the relationships between emotion, power, and environmental conflict. Our review of work in feminist studies, human geography, social psychology, social movement theory, and social and cultural anthropology suggests the need for a theoretical framework that captures the psychological, more-than-human, collective, geographical, and personal-political dimensions that intersect subjectivities in environmental conflicts. We stress the need to explicitly consider 'the political' at stake when researching emotions in environmental conflicts, and develop a conceptual framework for facilitating nuanced conceptualisations and analyses of subjects and power in environmental conflicts
