    CMOS Hyperbolic Sine ELIN filters for low/audio frequency biomedical applications

    Hyperbolic-Sine (Sinh) filters form a subclass of Externally-Linear-Internally-Non- Linear (ELIN) systems. They can handle large-signals in a low power environment under half the capacitor area required by the more popular ELIN Log-domain filters. Their inherent class-AB nature stems from the odd property of the sinh function at the heart of their companding operation. Despite this early realisation, the Sinh filtering paradigm has not attracted the interest it deserves to date probably due to its mathematical and circuit-level complexity. This Thesis presents an overview of the CMOS weak inversion Sinh filtering paradigm and explains how biomedical systems of low- to audio-frequency range could benefit from it. Its dual scope is to: consolidate the theory behind the synthesis and design of high order Sinh continuous–time filters and more importantly to confirm their micro-power consumption and 100+ dB of DR through measured results presented for the first time. Novel high order Sinh topologies are designed by means of a systematic mathematical framework introduced. They employ a recently proposed CMOS Sinh integrator comprising only p-type devices in its translinear loops. The performance of the high order topologies is evaluated both solely and in comparison with their Log domain counterparts. A 5th order Sinh Chebyshev low pass filter is compared head-to-head with a corresponding and also novel Log domain class-AB topology, confirming that Sinh filters constitute a solution of equally high DR (100+ dB) with half the capacitor area at the expense of higher complexity and power consumption. The theoretical findings are validated by means of measured results from an 8th order notch filter for 50/60Hz noise fabricated in a 0.35μm CMOS technology. Measured results confirm a DR of 102dB, a moderate SNR of ~60dB and 74μW power consumption from 2V power supply

    A multichannel physiological data/voice telemetry system

    A seven channel physiological telemetry system was designed, constructed, and tested for a space environment to transfer physiological and voice information to and from an astronaut. Three ECG leads were monitored simultaneously, and two-way voice communication was achieved. The portable unit operated properly under ground based station (GBS) control. The major design problem was associated with the constraints of a wide bandwidth FM transmitter with crystal control combined with the tri-state logic format used. However, by using an ''indirect FM'' scheme and incorporating additional waveshaping circuits at the GBS, proper operation of the system was obtained. In the present form, the telemetry system has capability for seven channels of low level (2.5 mv peak maximum) physiological signals with bandwidths between 0.03 Hz and 100 Hz. Additional signal conditioning and modification of the instrumentation amplifier gains are required for other signals

    Wired, wireless and wearable bioinstrumentation for high-precision recording of bioelectrical signals in bidirectional neural interfaces

    It is widely accepted by the scientific community that bioelectrical signals, which can be used for the identification of neurophysiological biomarkers indicative of a diseased or pathological state, could direct patient treatment towards more effective therapeutic strategies. However, the design and realisation of an instrument that can precisely record weak bioelectrical signals in the presence of strong interference stemming from a noisy clinical environment is one of the most difficult challenges associated with the strategy of monitoring bioelectrical signals for diagnostic purposes. Moreover, since patients often have to cope with the problem of limited mobility being connected to bulky and mains-powered instruments, there is a growing demand for small-sized, high-performance and ambulatory biopotential acquisition systems in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and in High-dependency wards. Furthermore, electrical stimulation of specific target brain regions has been shown to alleviate symptoms of neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, epilepsy etc. In recent years, the traditional practice of continuously stimulating the brain using static stimulation parameters has shifted to the use of disease biomarkers to determine the intensity and timing of stimulation. The main motivation behind closed-loop stimulation is minimization of treatment side effects by providing only the necessary stimulation required within a certain period of time, as determined from a guiding biomarker. Hence, it is clear that high-quality recording of local field potentials (LFPs) or electrocorticographic (ECoG) signals during deep brain stimulation (DBS) is necessary to investigate the instantaneous brain response to stimulation, minimize time delays for closed-loop neurostimulation and maximise the available neural data. To our knowledge, there are no commercial, small, battery-powered, wearable and wireless recording-only instruments that claim the capability of recording ECoG signals, which are of particular importance in closed-loop DBS and epilepsy DBS. In addition, existing recording systems lack the ability to provide artefact-free high-frequency (> 100 Hz) LFP recordings during DBS in real time primarily because of the contamination of the neural signals of interest by the stimulation artefacts. To address the problem of limited mobility often encountered by patients in the clinic and to provide a wide variety of high-precision sensor data to a closed-loop neurostimulation platform, a low-noise (8 nV/√Hz), eight-channel, battery-powered, wearable and wireless multi-instrument (55 × 80 mm2) was designed and developed. The performance of the realised instrument was assessed by conducting both ex vivo and in vivo experiments. The combination of desirable features and capabilities of this instrument, namely its small size (~one business card), its enhanced recording capabilities, its increased processing capabilities, its manufacturability (since it was designed using discrete off-the-shelf components), the wide bandwidth it offers (0.5 – 500 Hz) and the plurality of bioelectrical signals it can precisely record, render it a versatile tool to be utilized in a wide range of applications and environments. Moreover, in order to offer the capability of sensing and stimulating via the same electrode, novel real-time artefact suppression methods that could be used in bidirectional (recording and stimulation) system architectures are proposed and validated. More specifically, a novel, low-noise and versatile analog front-end (AFE), which uses a high-order (8th) analog Chebyshev notch filter to suppress the artefacts originating from the stimulation frequency, is presented. After defining the system requirements for concurrent LFP recording and DBS artefact suppression, the performance of the realised AFE is assessed by conducting both in vitro and in vivo experiments using unipolar and bipolar DBS (monophasic pulses, amplitude ranging from 3 to 6 V peak-to-peak, frequency 140 Hz and pulse width 100 µs). Under both in vitro and in vivo experimental conditions, the proposed AFE provided real-time, low-noise and artefact-free LFP recordings (in the frequency range 0.5 – 250 Hz) during stimulation. Finally, a family of tunable hardware filter designs and a novel method for real-time artefact suppression that enables wide-bandwidth biosignal recordings during stimulation are also presented. This work paves the way for the development of miniaturized research tools for closed-loop neuromodulation that use a wide variety of bioelectrical signals as control signals.Open Acces

    Design and Implementation of Complexity Reduced Digital Signal Processors for Low Power Biomedical Applications

    Wearable health monitoring systems can provide remote care with supervised, inde-pendent living which are capable of signal sensing, acquisition, local processing and transmission. A generic biopotential signal (such as Electrocardiogram (ECG), and Electroencephalogram (EEG)) processing platform consists of four main functional components. The signals acquired by the electrodes are amplified and preconditioned by the (1) Analog-Front-End (AFE) which are then digitized via the (2) Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) for further processing. The local digital signal processing is usually handled by a custom designed (3) Digital Signal Processor (DSP) which is responsible for either anyone or combination of signal processing algorithms such as noise detection, noise/artefact removal, feature extraction, classification and compres-sion. The digitally processed data is then transmitted via the (4) transmitter which is renown as the most power hungry block in the complete platform. All the afore-mentioned components of the wearable systems are required to be designed and fitted into an integrated system where the area and the power requirements are stringent. Therefore, hardware complexity and power dissipation of each functional component are crucial aspects while designing and implementing a wearable monitoring platform. The work undertaken focuses on reducing the hardware complexity of a biosignal DSP and presents low hardware complexity solutions that can be employed in the aforemen-tioned wearable platforms. A typical state-of-the-art system utilizes Sigma Delta (Σ∆) ADCs incorporating a Σ∆ modulator and a decimation filter whereas the state-of-the-art decimation filters employ linear phase Finite-Impulse-Response (FIR) filters with high orders that in-crease the hardware complexity [1–5]. In this thesis, the novel use of minimum phase Infinite-Impulse-Response (IIR) decimators is proposed where the hardware complexity is massively reduced compared to the conventional FIR decimators. In addition, the non-linear phase effects of these filters are also investigated since phase non-linearity may distort the time domain representation of the signal being filtered which is un-desirable effect for biopotential signals especially when the fiducial characteristics carry diagnostic importance. In the case of ECG monitoring systems the effect of the IIR filter phase non-linearity is minimal which does not affect the diagnostic accuracy of the signals. The work undertaken also proposes two methods for reducing the hardware complexity of the popular biosignal processing tool, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). General purpose multipliers are known to be hardware and power hungry in terms of the number of addition operations or their underlying building blocks like full adders or half adders required. Higher number of adders leads to an increase in the power consumption which is directly proportional to the clock frequency, supply voltage, switching activity and the resources utilized. A typical Field-Programmable-Gate-Array’s (FPGA) resources are Look-up Tables (LUTs) whereas a custom Digital Signal Processor’s (DSP) are gate-level cells of standard cell libraries that are used to build adders [6]. One of the proposed methods is the replacement of the hardware and power hungry general pur-pose multipliers and the coefficient memories with reconfigurable multiplier blocks that are composed of simple shift-add networks and multiplexers. This method substantially reduces the resource utilization as well as the power consumption of the system. The second proposed method is the design and implementation of the DWT filter banks using IIR filters which employ less number of arithmetic operations compared to the state-of-the-art FIR wavelets. This reduces the hardware complexity of the analysis filter bank of the DWT and can be employed in applications where the reconstruction is not required. However, the synthesis filter bank for the IIR wavelet transform has a higher computational complexity compared to the conventional FIR wavelet synthesis filter banks since re-indexing of the filtered data sequence is required that can only be achieved via the use of extra registers. Therefore, this led to the proposal of a novel design which replaces the complex IIR based synthesis filter banks with FIR fil-ters which are the approximations of the associated IIR filters. Finally, a comparative study is presented where the hybrid IIR/FIR and FIR/FIR wavelet filter banks are de-ployed in a typical noise reduction scenario using the wavelet thresholding techniques. It is concluded that the proposed hybrid IIR/FIR wavelet filter banks provide better denoising performance, reduced computational complexity and power consumption in comparison to their IIR/IIR and FIR/FIR counterparts

Some major applications include remote health monitoring, environment monitoring, smart grids etc. In this work we have identified the primary issues that IoT architectures are facing and developed a system architecture to address the issues identified. IoT architectures primarily face the power constraints due to their battery dependency in remote deployment such as remote health monitoring. Other issue is the hyper connectivity scenario, where the data generated by the sensor networks should have to be limited for efficient management of networks.     Enabling human physiological sensing by leveraging intelligent head-worn wearable systems

    This thesis explores the challenges of enabling human physiological sensing by leveraging head-worn wearable computer systems. In particular, we want to answer a fundamental question, i.e., could we leverage head-worn wearables to enable accurate and socially-acceptable solutions to improve human healthcare and prevent life-threatening conditions in our daily lives? To that end, we will study the techniques that utilise the unique advantages of wearable computers to (1) facilitate new sensing capabilities to capture various biosignals from the brain, the eyes, facial muscles, sweat glands, and blood vessels, (2) address motion artefacts and environmental noise in real-time with signal processing algorithms and hardware design techniques, and (3) enable long-term, high-fidelity biosignal monitoring with efficient on-chip intelligence and pattern-driven compressive sensing algorithms. We first demonstrate the ability to capture the activities of the user's brain, eyes, facial muscles, and sweat glands by proposing WAKE, a novel behind-the-ear biosignal sensing wearable. By studying the human anatomy in the ear area, we propose a wearable design to capture brain waves (EEG), eye movements (EOG), facial muscle contractions (EMG), and sweat gland activities (EDA) with a minimal number of sensors. Furthermore, we introduce a Three-fold Cascaded Amplifying (3CA) technique and signal processing algorithms to tame the motion artefacts and environmental noises for capturing high-fidelity signals in real time. We devise a machine-learning model based on the captured signals to detect microsleep with a high temporal resolution. Second, we will discuss our work on developing an efficient Pattern-dRiven Compressive Sensing framework (PROS) to enable long-term biosignal monitoring on low-power wearables. The system introduces tiny on-chip pattern recognition primitives (TinyPR) and a novel pattern-driven compressive sensing technique (PDCS) that exploits the sparsity of biosignals. They provide the ability to capture high-fidelity biosignals with an ultra-low power footprint. This development will unlock long-term healthcare applications on wearable computers, such as epileptic seizure monitoring, microsleep detection, etc. These applications were previously impractical on energy and resource-constrained wearable computers due to the limited battery lifetime, slow response rate, and inadequate biosignal quality. Finally, we will further explore the possibility of capturing the activities of a blood vessel (i.e., superficial temporal artery) lying deep inside the user's ear using an ear-worn wearable computer. The captured optical pulse signals (PPG) are used to develop a frequent and comfortable blood pressure monitoring system called eBP. In contrast to existing devices, eBP introduces a novel in-ear wearable system design and algorithms to eliminate the need to block the blood flow inside the ear, alleviating the user's discomfort

Biosignal-based technology is one of the most promising approaches in developing intelligent HCI systems. As a means of convenient and non-invasive biosignal-based intelligent control, myoelectric control identifies human movement intentions from electromyogram (EMG) signals recorded on muscles to realise intelligent control of robotic systems. Although the history of myoelectric control research has been more than half a century, commercial myoelectric-controlled devices are still mostly based on those early threshold-based methods. The emerging pattern recognition-based myoelectric control has remained an active research topic in laboratories because of insufficient reliability and robustness. This research focuses on pattern recognition-based myoelectric control. Up to now, most of effort in pattern recognition-based myoelectric control research has been invested in improving EMG pattern classification accuracy. However, high classification accuracy cannot directly lead to high controllability and usability for EMG-driven systems. This suggests that a complete system that is composed of relevant modules, including EMG acquisition, pattern recognition-based gesture discrimination, output equipment and its controller, is desirable and helpful as a developing and validating platform that is able to closely emulate real-world situations to promote research in myoelectric control. This research aims at investigating feasible and effective EMG signal processing and pattern recognition methods to extract useful information contained in EMG signals to establish an intelligent, compact and economical biosignal-based robotic control system. The research work includes in-depth study on existing pattern recognition-based methodologies, investigation on effective EMG signal capturing and data processing, EMG-based control system development, and anthropomorphic robotic hand design. The contributions of this research are mainly in following three aspects: Developed precision electronic surface EMG (sEMG) acquisition methods that are able to collect high quality sEMG signals. The first method was designed in a single-ended signalling manner by using monolithic instrumentation amplifiers to determine and evaluate the analog sEMG signal processing chain architecture and circuit parameters. This method was then evolved into a fully differential analog sEMG detection and collection method that uses common commercial electronic components to implement all analog sEMG amplification and filtering stages in a fully differential way. The proposed fully differential sEMG detection and collection method is capable of offering a higher signal-to-noise ratio in noisy environments than the single-ended method by making full use of inherent common-mode noise rejection capability of balanced signalling. To the best of my knowledge, the literature study has not found similar methods that implement the entire analog sEMG amplification and filtering chain in a fully differential way by using common commercial electronic components. Investigated and developed a reliable EMG pattern recognition-based real-time gesture discrimination approach. Necessary functional modules for real-time gesture discrimination were identified and implemented using appropriate algorithms. Special attention was paid to the investigation and comparison of representative features and classifiers for improving accuracy and robustness. A novel EMG feature set was proposed to improve the performance of EMG pattern recognition. Designed an anthropomorphic robotic hand construction methodology for myoelectric control validation on a physical platform similar to in real-world situations. The natural anatomical structure of the human hand was imitated to kinematically model the robotic hand. The proposed robotic hand is a highly underactuated mechanism, featuring 14 degrees of freedom and three degrees of actuation. This research carried out an in-depth investigation into EMG data acquisition and EMG signal pattern recognition. A series of experiments were conducted in EMG signal processing and system development. The final myoelectric-controlled robotic hand system and the system testing confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed methods for surface EMG acquisition and human hand gesture discrimination. To verify and demonstrate the proposed myoelectric control system, real-time tests were conducted onto the anthropomorphic prototype robotic hand. Currently, the system is able to identify five patterns in real time, including hand open, hand close, wrist flexion, wrist extension and the rest state. With more motion patterns added in, this system has the potential to identify more hand movements. The research has generated a few journal and international conference publications

    Blind Source Separation for the Processing of Contact-Less Biosignals

    (Spatio-temporale) Blind Source Separation (BSS) eignet sich für die Verarbeitung von Multikanal-Messungen im Bereich der kontaktlosen Biosignalerfassung. Ziel der BSS ist dabei die Trennung von (z.B. kardialen) Nutzsignalen und Störsignalen typisch für die kontaktlosen Messtechniken. Das Potential der BSS kann praktisch nur ausgeschöpft werden, wenn (1) ein geeignetes BSS-Modell verwendet wird, welches der Komplexität der Multikanal-Messung gerecht wird und (2) die unbestimmte Permutation unter den BSS-Ausgangssignalen gelöst wird, d.h. das Nutzsignal praktisch automatisiert identifiziert werden kann. Die vorliegende Arbeit entwirft ein Framework, mit dessen Hilfe die Effizienz von BSS-Algorithmen im Kontext des kamera-basierten Photoplethysmogramms bewertet werden kann. Empfehlungen zur Auswahl bestimmter Algorithmen im Zusammenhang mit spezifischen Signal-Charakteristiken werden abgeleitet. Außerdem werden im Rahmen der Arbeit Konzepte für die automatisierte Kanalauswahl nach BSS im Bereich der kontaktlosen Messung des Elektrokardiogramms entwickelt und bewertet. Neuartige Algorithmen basierend auf Sparse Coding erwiesen sich dabei als besonders effizient im Vergleich zu Standard-Methoden.(Spatio-temporal) Blind Source Separation (BSS) provides a large potential to process distorted multichannel biosignal measurements in the context of novel contact-less recording techniques for separating distortions from the cardiac signal of interest. This potential can only be practically utilized (1) if a BSS model is applied that matches the complexity of the measurement, i.e. the signal mixture and (2) if permutation indeterminacy is solved among the BSS output components, i.e the component of interest can be practically selected. The present work, first, designs a framework to assess the efficacy of BSS algorithms in the context of the camera-based photoplethysmogram (cbPPG) and characterizes multiple BSS algorithms, accordingly. Algorithm selection recommendations for certain mixture characteristics are derived. Second, the present work develops and evaluates concepts to solve permutation indeterminacy for BSS outputs of contact-less electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings. The novel approach based on sparse coding is shown to outperform the existing concepts of higher order moments and frequency-domain features
