Design of electronic systems for automotive sensor conditioning
This thesis deals with the development of sensor systems for automotive, mainly targeting the exploitation of the new generation of Micro Electro-Mechanical Sensors (MEMS), which achieve a dramatic reduction of area and power consumption but at the same time require more complexity in the sensor conditioning interface. Several issues concerning the development of automotive ASICs are presented, together with an overview of automotive electronics market and its main sensor applications. The state of the art for sensor interfaces design (the generic sensor interface concept), consists in sharing the same electronics among similar sensor applications, thus saving cost and time-to-market but also implementing a sub-optimal system with area and power overheads. A Platform Based Design methodology is proposed to overcome the limitations of generic sensor interfaces, by keeping the platform generality at the highest design layers and pursuing the maximum optimization and performances in the platform customization for a specific sensor. A complete design flow is presented (up to the ASIC implementation for gyro sensor conditioning), together with examples regarding IP development for reuse and low power optimization of third party designs. A further evolution of Platform Based Design has been achieved by means of implementation into silicon of the ISIF (Intelligent Sensor InterFace) platform. ISIF is a highly programmable mixed-signal chip which allows a substantial reduction of design space exploration time, as it can implement in a short time a wide class of sensor conditioning architectures. Thus it lets the designers evaluate directly on silicon the impact of different architectural choices, as well as perform feasibility studies, sensor evaluations and accurate estimation of the resulting dedicated ASIC performances.
Several case studies regarding fast prototyping possibilities with ISIF are presented: a magneto-resistive position sensor, a biosensor (which produces pA currents in presence of surface chemical reactions) and two capacitive inertial sensors, a gyro and a low-g YZ accelerometer. The accelerometer interface has also been implemented in miniboards of about 3 cm2 (with ISIF and sensor dies bonded together) and a series of automatic trimming and characterization procedures have been developed in order to evaluate sensor and interface behaviour over the automotive temperature range, providing a valuable feedback for the implementation of a dedicated accelerometer interface
Embedded electronic systems driven by run-time reconfigurable hardware
Abstract
This doctoral thesis addresses the design of embedded electronic systems based on run-time reconfigurable hardware technology –available through SRAM-based FPGA/SoC devices– aimed at contributing to enhance the life quality of the human beings. This work does research on the conception of the system architecture and the reconfiguration engine that provides to the FPGA the capability of dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to synthesize, by means of hardware/software co-design, a given application partitioned in processing tasks which are multiplexed in time and space, optimizing thus its physical implementation –silicon area, processing time, complexity, flexibility, functional density, cost and power consumption– in comparison with other alternatives based on static hardware (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). The design flow of such technology is evaluated through the prototyping of several engineering applications (control systems, mathematical coprocessors, complex image processors, etc.), showing a high enough level of maturity for its exploitation in the industry.Resumen

Compressive Sensing and Its Applications in Automotive Radar Systems
Die Entwicklung in Richtung zu autonomem Fahren verspricht, künftig einen sicheren
Verkehr ohne tödliche Unfälle zu ermöglichen, indem menschliche Fahrer vollständig
ersetzt werden. Dadurch entfällt der Faktor des menschlichen Fehlers, der aus
Müdigkeit, Unachtsamkeit oder Alkoholeinfluss resultiert. Um jedoch eine breite
Akzeptanz für autonome Fahrzeuge zu erreichen und es somit eines Tages vollständig
umzusetzen, sind noch eine Vielzahl von Herausforderungen zu lösen. Da in einem
autonomen Fahrzeug kein menschlicher Fahrer mehr in Notfällen eingreifen kann,
müssen sich autonome Fahrzeuge auf leistungsfähige und robuste Sensorsysteme
verlassen können, um in kritischen Situationen auch unter widrigen Bedingungen
angemessen reagieren zu können. Daher ist die Entwicklung von Sensorsystemen
erforderlich, die für Funktionalitäten jenseits der aktuellen advanced driver assistance
systems eingesetzt werden können. Dies resultiert in neuen Anforderungen, die erfüllt
werden müssen, um sichere und zuverlässige autonome Fahrzeuge zu realisieren, die
weder Fahrzeuginsassen noch Passanten gefährden. Radarsysteme gehören zu den
Schlüsselkomponenten unter der Vielzahl der verfügbaren Sensorsysteme, da sie im
Gegensatz zu visuellen Sensoren von widrigen Wetter- und Umgebungsbedingungen
kaum beeinträchtigt werden. Darüber hinaus liefern Radarsysteme zusätzliche
Umgebungsinformationen wie Abstand, Winkel und relative Geschwindigkeit zwischen
Sensor und reflektierenden Zielen. Die vorliegende Dissertation deckt im Wesentlichen
zwei Hauptaspekte der Forschung und Entwicklung auf dem Gebiet der Radarsysteme
im Automobilbereich ab. Ein Aspekt ist die Steigerung der Effizienz und Robustheit
der Signalerfassung und -verarbeitung für die Radarperzeption. Der andere Aspekt ist
die Beschleunigung der Validierung und Verifizierung von automated cyber-physical
systems, die parallel zum Automatisierungsgrad auch eine höhere Komplexität
aufweisen.
Nach der Analyse zahlreicher möglicher Compressive Sensing Methoden, die im
Bereich Fahrzeugradarsysteme angewendet werden können, wird ein rauschmoduliertes
gepulstes Radarsystem vorgestellt, das kommerzielle Fahrzeugradarsysteme in
seiner Robustheit gegenüber Rauschen übertrifft. Die Nachteile anderer gepulster
Radarsysteme hinsichtlich des Signalerfassungsaufwands und der Laufzeit werden
durch die Verwendung eines Compressive Sensing-Signalerfassungs- und Rekonstruktionsverfahrens
in Kombination mit einer Rauschmodulation deutlich verringert.
Mit Compressive Sensing konnte der Aufwand für die Signalerfassung um 70% reduziert
werden, während gleichzeitig die Robustheit der Radarwahrnehmung auch für signal-to-noise-ratio-Pegel nahe oder unter Null erreicht wird. Mit einem validierten
Radarsensormodell wurde das Rauschradarsystem emuliert und mit einem
kommerziellen Fahrzeugradarsystem verglichen. Datengetriebene Wettermodelle
wurden entwickelt und während der Simulation angewendet, um die Radarleistung
unter widrigen Bedingungen zu bewerten. Während eine Besprühung mit Wasser die
Radomdämpfung um 10 dB erhöht und Spritzwasser sogar um 20 dB, ergibt sich die
eigentliche Begrenzung aus der Rauschzahl und Empfindlichkeit des Empfängers. Es
konnte bewiesen werden, dass das vorgeschlagene Compressive Sensing Rauschradarsystem
mit einer zusätzlichen Signaldämpfung von bis zu 60 dB umgehen kann
und damit eine hohe Robustheit in ungünstigen Umwelt- und Wetterbedingungen
aufweist.
Neben der Robustheit wird auch die Interferenz berücksichtigt. Zum einen wird
die erhöhte Störfestigkeit des Störradarsystems nachgewiesen. Auf der anderen
Seite werden die Auswirkungen auf bestehende Fahrzeugradarsysteme bewertet und
Strategien zur Minderung der Auswirkungen vorgestellt.
Die Struktur der Arbeit ist folgende. Nach der Einführung der Grundlagen
und Methoden für Fahrzeugradarsysteme werden die Theorie und Metriken hinter
Compressive Sensing gezeigt. Darüber hinaus werden weitere Aspekte wie Umgebungsbedingungen,
unterschiedliche Radararchitekturen und Interferenz erläutert.
Der Stand der Technik gibt einen Überblick über Compressive Sensing-Ansätze und
Implementierungen mit einem Fokus auf Radar. Darüber hinaus werden Aspekte
von Fahrzeug- und Rauschradarsystemen behandelt. Der Hauptteil beginnt mit
der Vorstellung verschiedener Ansätze zur Nutzung von Compressive Sensing für
Fahrzeugradarsysteme, die in der Lage sind, die Erfassung und Wahrnehmung von
Radarsignalen zu verbessern oder zu erweitern. Anschließend wird der Fokus auf
ein Rauschradarsystem gelegt, das mit Compressive Sensing eine effiziente Signalerfassung
und -rekonstruktion ermöglicht. Es wurde mit verschiedenen Compressive
Sensing-Metriken analysiert und in einer Proof-of-Concept-Simulation bewertet. Mit
einer Emulation des Rauschradarsystems wurde das Potential der Compressive Sensing
Signalerfassung und -verarbeitung in einem realistischeren Szenario demonstriert.
Die Entwicklung und Validierung des zugrunde liegenden Sensormodells wird ebenso
dokumentiert wie die Entwicklung der datengetriebenen Wettermodelle. Nach der
Betrachtung von Interferenz und der Koexistenz des Rauschradars mit kommerziellen
Radarsystemen schließt ein letztes Kapitel mit Schlussfolgerungen und einem
Ausblick die Arbeit ab.Developments towards autonomous driving promise to lead to safer traffic, where fatal
accidents can be avoided after making human drivers obsolete and hence removing
the factor of human error. However, to ensure the acceptance of automated driving
and make it a reality one day, still a huge amount of challenges need to be solved.
With having no human supervisors, automated vehicles have to rely on capable and
robust sensor systems to ensure adequate reactions in critical situations, even during
adverse conditions. Therefore, the development of sensor systems is required that
can be applied for functionalities beyond current advanced driver assistance systems.
New requirements need to be met in order to realize safe and reliable automated
vehicles that do not harm passersby.
Radar systems belong to the key components among the variety of sensor systems.
Other than visual sensors, radar is less vulnerable towards adverse weather and
environment conditions. In addition, radar provides complementary environment
information such as target distance, angular position or relative velocity, too. The
thesis ad hand covers basically two main aspects of research and development in the
field of automotive radar systems. One aspect is to increase efficiency and robustness
in signal acquisition and processing for radar perception. The other aspect is to
accelerate validation and verification of automated cyber-physical systems that
feature more complexity along with the level of automation.
After analyzing a variety of possible Compressive Sensing methods for automotive
radar systems, a noise modulated pulsed radar system is suggested in the thesis at
hand, which outperforms commercial automotive radar systems in its robustness
towards noise. Compared to other pulsed radar systems, their drawbacks regarding
signal acquisition effort and computation run time are resolved by using noise modulation
for implementing a Compressive Sensing signal acquisition and reconstruction
method. Using Compressive Sensing, the effort in signal acquisition was reduced by
70%, while obtaining a radar perception robustness even for signal-to-noise-ratio
levels close to or below zero. With a validated radar sensor model the noise radar
was emulated and compared to a commercial automotive radar system. Data-driven
weather models were developed and applied during simulation to evaluate radar performance
in adverse conditions. While water sprinkles increase radome attenuation
by 10 dB and splash water even by 20 dB, the actual limitation comes from noise
figure and sensitivity of the receiver. The additional signal attenuation that can be
handled by the proposed compressive sensing noise radar system proved to be even up to 60 dB, which ensures a high robustness of the receiver during adverse weather
and environment conditions.
Besides robustness, interference is also considered. On the one hand the increased
robustness towards interference of the noise radar system is demonstrated. On
the other hand, the impact on existing automotive radar systems is evaluated and
strategies to mitigate the impact are presented.
The structure of the thesis is the following. After introducing basic principles
and methods for automotive radar systems, the theory and metrics of Compressive
Sensing is presented. Furthermore some particular aspects are highlighted such as
environmental conditions, different radar architectures and interference. The state of
the art provides an overview on Compressive Sensing approaches and implementations
with focus on radar. In addition, it covers automotive radar and noise radar related
aspects. The main part starts with presenting different approaches on making use
of Compressive Sensing for automotive radar systems, that are capable of either
improving or extending radar signal acquisition and perception. Afterwards the focus
is put on a noise radar system that uses Compressive Sensing for an efficient signal
acquisition and reconstruction. It was analyzed using different Compressive Sensing
metrics and evaluated in a proof-of-concept simulation. With an emulation of the
noise radar system the feasibility of the Compressive Sensing signal acquisition and
processing was demonstrated in a more realistic scenario. The development and
validation of the underlying sensor model is documented as well as the development
of the data-driven weather models. After considering interference and co-existence
with commercial radar systems, a final chapter with conclusions and an outlook
completes the work

ENABLING IOT AUTHENTICATION, PRIVACY AND SECURITY VIA BLOCKCHAIN
Although low-power and Internet-connected gadgets and sensors are increasingly integrated into our lives, the optimal design of these systems remains an issue. In particular, authentication, privacy, security, and performance are critical success factors. Furthermore, with emerging research areas such as autonomous cars, advanced manufacturing, smart cities, and building, usage of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices is expected to skyrocket. A single compromised node can be turned into a malicious one that brings down whole systems or causes disasters in safety-critical applications. This dissertation addresses the critical problems of (i) device management, (ii) data management, and (iii) service management in IoT systems. In particular, we propose an integrated platform solution for IoT device authentication, data privacy, and service security via blockchain-based smart contracts. We ensure IoT device authentication by blockchain-based IC traceability system, from its fabrication to its end-of-life, allowing both the supplier and a potential customer to verify an IC’s provenance. Results show that our proposed consortium blockchain framework implementation in Hyperledger Fabric for IC traceability achieves a throughput of 35 transactions per second (tps). To corroborate the blockchain information, we authenticate the IC securely and uniquely with an embedded Physically Unclonable Function (PUF). For reliable Weak PUF-based authentication, our proposed accelerated aging technique reduces the cumulative burn-in cost by ∼ 56%. We also propose a blockchain-based solution to integrate the privacy of data generated from the IoT devices by giving users control of their privacy. The smart contract controlled trust-base ensures that the users have private access to their IoT devices and data. We then propose a remote configuration of IC features via smart contracts, where an IC can be programmed repeatedly and securely. This programmability will enable users to upgrade IC features or rent upgraded IC features for a fixed period after users have purchased the IC. We tailor the hardware to meet the blockchain performance. Our on-die hardware module design enforces the hardware configuration’s secure execution and uses only 2,844 slices in the Xilinx Zedboard Zynq Evaluation board. Design and Testing of Electronic Devices for Harsh Environments
In this thesis an overview of the research activity focused on development, design
and testing of electronic devices and systems for harsh environments has been
reported. The scope of the work has been the design and validation flow of
Integrated Circuits operating in two harsh applications: Automotive and High
Energy Physics experiments.
In order to fulfill the severe operating electrical and environmental conditions of
automotive applications, a systematic methodology has been followed in the
design of an innovative Intelligent Power Switch: several design solutions have
been developed at architectural and circuital level, integrating on-chip selfdiagnostic
capabilities and full protection against high voltage and reverse polarity,
effects of wiring parasitics, over-current and over-temperature phenomena.
Moreover current slope and soft start integrated techniques has ensured low EMI,
making the Intelligent Power Switch also configurable to drive different interchangeable
loads efficiently. The innovative device proposed has been
implemented in a 0.35 μm HV-CMOS technology and embedded in mechatronic
3rd generation brush-holder regulator System-on-Chip for an automotive alternator.
Electrical simulations and experimental characterization and testing at componentlevel
and on-board system-level has proven that the proposed design allows for a
compact and smart power switch realization, facing the harshest automotive
conditions. The smart driver has been able to supply up to 1.5 A to various types of
loads (e.g.: incadescent lamp bulbs, LED), in operating temperatures in the wide
range -40 °C to 150 °C, with robustness against high voltage up to 55 V and
reverse polarity up to -15 V.
The second branch of research activity has been framed within the High Energy
Physics area, leading to the development of a general purpose and flexible
protocol for the data acquisition and the distribution of Timing, Trigger and Control
signals and its implementation in radiation tolerant interfaces in CMOS 130 nm
technology. The several features integrated in the protocol has made it suitable for
different High Energy Physics experiments: flexibility w.r.t. bandwidth and latency
requirements, robustness of critical information against radiation-induced errors,
compatibility with different data types, flexibility w.r.t the architecture of the control
and readout systems, are the key features of this novel protocol.
Innovative radiation hardening techniques have been studied and implemented in
the test-chip to ensure the proper functioning in operating environments with a high
level of radiation, such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva.
An FPGA-based emulator has been developed and, in a first phase, employed for
functional validation of the protocol. In a second step, the emulator has been
modified as test-bed to assess the Transmitter and Receiver interfaces embedded
on the test-chip. An extensive phase of tests has proven the functioning of the
interfaces at the three speed options, 4xF, 8xF and 16xF (F = reference clock
frequency) in different configurations.
Finally, irradiation tests has been performed at CERN X-rays irradiation facility,
bearing out the proper behaviour of the interfaces up to 40 Mrad(SiO2)
Using Partial Reconfiguration for SoC Design and Implementation
Most reconfigurable systems rely on FPGA technology. Among these ones, those which permit dynamic and partial reconfiguration, offer added benefits in flexibility, in-field device upgrade, improved design and manufacturing time, and even, in some cases, power consumption reductions. However, dynamic reconfiguration is a complex task, and the real benefits of its use in real applications have been often questioned. This paper presents an overview of the partial reconfiguration technique application, along with four original applications. The main goal of these applications is to test several architectures with different flexibility and, to search for the partial reconfiguration "killing application", that is, the application that better demonstrates the benefits of today reconfigurable systems based on commercial FPGAs. Therefore, the presented applications are rather a proof of concept, than fully operative and closed systems. First, a brief introduction to the partial reconfigurable systems application topic has been included. After that, the descriptions of the created reconfigurable systems are presented: first, an on-chip communications emulation framework, second, an on chip debugging system, third, a wireless sensor network reconfigurable node and finally, a remote reconfigurable client-server device. A NETWORK PROCESSING NODE FOR LIGHT UNMANNED AIRCRAFT
Over the last decade, research into unmanned and autonomous vehicles has greatly increased. With applications ranging from science and exploration to humanitarian and military efforts, the rising need for autonomous vehicles demands constant innovation and growth. The Intelligent Dependable Embedded Architectures (IDEA) lab at the University of Kentucky is continually launching research oriented programs [1]. A few key projects focus on the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Through this research, at the University of Kentucky, the need to develop a reliable, lightweight, node based hardware for use in light UAVs and other unmanned and autonomous vehicles became apparent. This paper addresses the design and implementation of a network processing node for light UAVs. This system utilizes a Controller Area Network (CAN) noise tolerant communications bus, a low power ZigBee Wireless Network for expanded inner plane communications and Silicon Laboratories C8051F041 microcontrollers to provide the necessary inputs/output and data processing.
