    A model predictive control approach to the periodic implementation of the solutions of the optimal dynamic resource allocation problem

    This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) approach to the periodic implementation of the optimal solutions of a class of resource allocation problems in which the allocation requirements and conditions repeat periodically over time. This special class of resource allocation problems includes many practical energy optimization problems such as load scheduling and generation dispatch. The convergence and robustness of the MPC algorithm is proved by invoking results from convex optimization. To illustrate the practical applications of the MPC algorithm, the energy optimization of a water pumping system is studied

    A Decision Support System for Dynamic Integrated Project Scheduling and Equipment Operation Planning

    Common practice in scheduling under limited resource availability is to first schedule activities with the assumption of unlimited resources, and then assign required resources to activities until available resources are exhausted. The process of matching a feasible resource plan with a feasible schedule is called resource allocation. Then, to avoid sharp fluctuations in the resource profile, further adjustments are applied to both schedule and resource allocation plan within the limits of feasibility constraints. This process is referred to as resource leveling in the literature. Combination of these three stages constitutes the standard approach of top-down scheduling. In contrast, when scarce and/or expensive resource is to be scheduled, first a feasible and economical resource usage plan is established and then activities are scheduled accordingly. This practice is referred to as bottom-up scheduling in the literature. Several algorithms are developed and implemented in various commercial scheduling software packages to schedule based on either of these approaches. However, in reality resource loaded scheduling problems are somewhere in between these two ends of the spectrum. Additionally, application of either of these conventional approaches results in just a feasible resource loaded schedule which is not necessarily the cost optimal solution. In order to find the cost optimal solution, activity scheduling and resource allocation problems should be considered jointly. In other words, these two individual problems should be formulated and solved as an integrated optimization problem. In this research, a novel integrated optimization model is proposed for solving the resource loaded scheduling problems with concentration on construction heavy equipment being the targeted resource type. Assumptions regarding this particular type of resource along with other practical assumptions are provided for the model through inputs and constraints. The objective function is to minimize the fraction of the execution cost of resource loaded schedule which varies based on the selected solution and thus, considered to be the model's decision making criterion. This fraction of cost which hereafter is referred to as operation cost, encompasses four components namely schedule delay cost, shipping, rental and ownership costs for equipment

    A unit cost adjusting heuristic algorithm for the integrated planning and scheduling of a two-stage supply chain

    Purpose: The stable relationship of one-supplier-one-customer is replaced by a dynamic relationship of multi-supplier-multi-customer in current market gradually, and efficient scheduling techniques are important tools of the dynamic supply chain relationship establishing process. This paper studies the optimization of the integrated planning and scheduling problem of a two-stage supply chain with multiple manufacturers and multiple retailers to obtain a minimum supply chain operating cost, whose manufacturers have different production capacities, holding and producing cost rates, transportation costs to retailers. Design/methodology/approach: As a complex task allocation and scheduling problem, this paper sets up an INLP model for it and designs a Unit Cost Adjusting (UCA) heuristic algorithm that adjust the suppliers’ supplying quantity according to their unit costs step by step to solve the model. Findings: Relying on the contrasting analysis between the UCA and the Lingo solvers for optimizing many numerical experiments, results show that the INLP model and the UCA algorithm can obtain its near optimal solution of the two-stage supply chain’s planning and scheduling problem within very short CPU time. Research limitations/implications: The proposed UCA heuristic can easily help managers to optimizing the two-stage supply chain scheduling problems which doesn’t include the delivery time and batch of orders. For two-stage supply chains are the most common form of actual commercial relationships, so to make some modification and study on the UCA heuristic should be able to optimize the integrated planning and scheduling problems of a supply chain with more reality constraints. Originality/value: This research proposes an innovative UCA heuristic for optimizing the integrated planning and scheduling problem of two-stage supply chains with the constraints of suppliers’ production capacity and the orders’ delivering time, and has a great practical significance to the dynamic relationship establishment of multi-supplier-multi-customer in current market.Peer Reviewe

    Joint optimization of allocation and release policy decisions for surgical block time under uncertainty

    The research presented in this dissertation contributes to the growing literature on applications of operations research methodology to healthcare problems through the development and analysis of mathematical models and simulation techniques to find practical solutions to fundamental problems facing nearly all hospitals. In practice, surgical block schedule allocation is usually determined regardless of the stochastic nature of case demand and duration. Once allocated, associated block time release policies, if utilized, are often simple rules that may be far from optimal. Although previous research has examined these decisions individually, our model considers them jointly. A multi-objective model that characterizes financial, temporal, and clinical measures is utilized within a simulation optimization framework. The model is also used to test “conventional wisdom” solutions and to identify improved practical approaches. Our result from scheduling multi-priority patients at the Stafford hospital highlights the importance of considering the joint optimization of block schedule and block release policy on quality of care and revenue, taking into account current resources and performance. The proposed model suggests a new approach for hospitals and OR managers to investigate the dynamic interaction of these decisions and to evaluate the impact of changes in the surgical schedule on operating room usage and patient waiting time, where patients have different sensitivities to waiting time. This study also investigated the performance of multiple scheduling policies under multi-priority patients. Experiments were conducted to assess their impacts on the waiting time of patients and hospital profit. Our results confirmed that our proposed threshold-based reserve policy has superior performance over common scheduling policies by preserving a specific amount of OR time for late-arriving, high priority demand

    Power Allocation and Scheduling for SWIPT Systems with Non-linear Energy Harvesting Model

    In this paper, we design a resource allocation algorithm for multiuser simultaneous wireless information and power transfer systems for a realistic non-linear energy harvesting (EH) model. In particular, the algorithm design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem for the maximization of the long-term average total harvested power at EH receivers subject to quality of service requirements for information decoding receivers. To obtain a tractable solution, we transform the corresponding non-convex sum-of-ratios objective function into an equivalent objective function in parametric subtractive form. This leads to a computationally efficient iterative resource allocation algorithm. Numerical results reveal a significant performance gain that can be achieved if the resource allocation algorithm design is based on the non-linear EH model instead of the traditional linear model.Comment: Accepted for presentation at the IEEE ICC 201

    Mixed integer-linear formulations of cumulative scheduling constraints - A comparative study

    This paper introduces two MILP models for the cumulative scheduling constraint and associated pre-processing filters. We compare standard solver performance for these models on three sets of problems and for two of them, where tasks have unitary resource consumption, we also compare them with two models based on a geometric placement constraint. In the experiments, the solver performance of one of the cumulative models, is clearly the best and is also shown to scale very well for a large scale industrial transportation scheduling problem

    Mathematical Models of Seaside Operations in Container Ports and their Solution

    Operational Research and Optimization are fundamental disciplines which, for decades, provided the real-world with tools for solving practical problems. Many such problems arise in container ports. Container terminals are important assets in modern economies. They constitute an important means of distributing goods made overseas to domestic markets in most countries. They are expensive to build and difficult to operate. We describe here some of the main operations which are faced daily by decision makers at those facilities. Decision makers often use Operational Research and Optimization tools to run these operations effectively. In this thesis, we focus on seaside operations which can be divided into three main problems: 1- the Berth Allocation Problem (BAP), 2- the Quay Crane Assignment Problem (QCAP), 3- the Quay Crane Scheduling Problem (QCSP). Each one of the above is a complex optimization problem in its own right. However, solving them individually without the consideration of the others may lead to overall suboptimal solutions. For this reason we will investigate the pairwise combinations of these problems and their total integration In addition, several important factors that affected on the final solution. The main contributions of this study are modelling and solving of the: 1- Robust berth allocation problem (RBAP): a new efficient mathematical model is formulated and a hybrid algorithm based on Branch-and-Cut and the Genetic Algorithm is used to find optimal or near optimal solutions for large scale instances in reasonable time. 2- Quay crane assignment and quay crane scheduling problem (QCASP): a new mathematical model is built to simultaneously solve QCASP and a heuristic based on the Genetic Algorithm is developed to find solutions to realistic instances in reasonable time. 3- Berth allocation, quay crane assignment and quay crane scheduling problem (BACASP): an aggregate model for all three seaside operations is proposed and to solve realistic instances of the problem, an adapted variant of the Genetic Algorithm is implemented.
