    An occam Style Communications System for UNIX Networks

    This document describes the design of a communications system which provides occam style communications primitives under a Unix environment, using TCP/IP protocols, and any number of other protocols deemed suitable as underlying transport layers. The system will integrate with a low overhead scheduler/kernel without incurring significant costs to the execution of processes within the run time environment. A survey of relevant occam and occam3 features and related research is followed by a look at the Unix and TCP/IP facilities which determine our working constraints, and a description of the T9000 transputer's Virtual Channel Processor, which was instrumental in our formulation. Drawing from the information presented here, a design for the communications system is subsequently proposed. Finally, a preliminary investigation of methods for lightweight access control to shared resources in an environment which does not provide support for critical sections, semaphores, or busy waiting, is made. This is presented with relevance to mutual exclusion problems which arise within the proposed design. Future directions for the evolution of this project are discussed in conclusion

    How to Implement an Asynchronous Test Wrapper for Network-on-Chip Nodes

    International audienceThe Network-on-Chip (NoC) paradigm is currently known as an alternative solution for the on chip communication in the next SoC generation, especially, asynchronous NoCs. One of the challenges for asynchronous NoC-based systems design is testing asynchronous network architectures for manufacturing defects. To improve the testability of asynchronous NoCs, we have developed a scalable and configurable asynchronous Design-for-Test (DfT) architecture. In this architecture, each asynchronous network node is surrounded by an asynchronous test wrapper and the network communication channels are reused as a high-speed Test Access Mechanism (TAM). This architecture is designed to test all network elements (routers, communication channels), but it can also be used to test computational resources. In this paper, we introduce how to realize and implement the test wrapper in Quasi Delay Insensitive (QDI) asynchronous logic style. The validation and experimental results are also presented

    Gunrock: GPU Graph Analytics

    For large-scale graph analytics on the GPU, the irregularity of data access and control flow, and the complexity of programming GPUs, have presented two significant challenges to developing a programmable high-performance graph library. "Gunrock", our graph-processing system designed specifically for the GPU, uses a high-level, bulk-synchronous, data-centric abstraction focused on operations on a vertex or edge frontier. Gunrock achieves a balance between performance and expressiveness by coupling high performance GPU computing primitives and optimization strategies with a high-level programming model that allows programmers to quickly develop new graph primitives with small code size and minimal GPU programming knowledge. We characterize the performance of various optimization strategies and evaluate Gunrock's overall performance on different GPU architectures on a wide range of graph primitives that span from traversal-based algorithms and ranking algorithms, to triangle counting and bipartite-graph-based algorithms. The results show that on a single GPU, Gunrock has on average at least an order of magnitude speedup over Boost and PowerGraph, comparable performance to the fastest GPU hardwired primitives and CPU shared-memory graph libraries such as Ligra and Galois, and better performance than any other GPU high-level graph library.Comment: 52 pages, invited paper to ACM Transactions on Parallel Computing (TOPC), an extended version of PPoPP'16 paper "Gunrock: A High-Performance Graph Processing Library on the GPU

    Asynchronous Visualization of Spatiotemporal Information for Multiple Moving Targets

    In the modern information age, the quantity and complexity of spatiotemporal data is increasing both rapidly and continuously. Sensor systems with multiple feeds that gather multidimensional spatiotemporal data will result in information clusters and overload, as well as a high cognitive load for users of these systems. To meet future safety-critical situations and enhance time-critical decision-making missions in dynamic environments, and to support the easy and effective managing, browsing, and searching of spatiotemporal data in a dynamic environment, we propose an asynchronous, scalable, and comprehensive spatiotemporal data organization, display, and interaction method that allows operators to navigate through spatiotemporal information rather than through the environments being examined, and to maintain all necessary global and local situation awareness. To empirically prove the viability of our approach, we developed the Event-Lens system, which generates asynchronous prioritized images to provide the operator with a manageable, comprehensive view of the information that is collected by multiple sensors. The user study and interaction mode experiments were designed and conducted. The Event-Lens system was discovered to have a consistent advantage in multiple moving-target marking-task performance measures. It was also found that participants’ attentional control, spatial ability, and action video gaming experience affected their overall performance

    An expository investigation of the potential impact of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) at NASA Lewis Research Center is described. To properly frame the subject, the paper contains a detailed survey of the components of Narrowband ISDN. The principles and objectives are presented as decreed by the Consultative Committee for International Telephone and Telegraph (CCITT). The various channel types are delineated and their associated service combinations are described. The subscriber-access network functions are explained pictorially via the ISDN reference configuration. A section on switching techniques is presented to enable the reader to understand the emergence of the concept of fast packet switching. This new technology is designed to operate over the high bandwidth, low error rate transmission media that characterizes the LeRC environment. A brief introduction to the next generation of networks is covered with sections on Broadband ISDM (B-ISDN), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and Synchronous Optical Networks (SONET). Applications at LeRC are presented, first in terms of targets of opportunity, then in light of compatibility constraints.     A partial scan methodology for testing self-timed circuits

    technical reportThis paper presents a partial scan method for testing control sections of macromodule based self-timed circuits for stuck-at faults. In comparison with other proposed test methods for self-timed circuits, this technique offers better fault coverage than methods using self-checking techniques, and requires fewer storage elements to be made scannable than full scan approaches with similar fault coverage. A new method is proposed to test the sequential network in this partial scan environment. Experimental data is presented to show that high fault coverage is possible using this method with only a subset of storage elements being made scannable

    thesisThis thesis designs, implements, and evaluates modular Open Core Protocol (OCP) interfaces for Intellectual Property (IP) cores and Network-on-Chip (NoC) that re- duces System-On-Chip (SoC) design time and enables research on di erent architectural sequencing control methods. To utilize the NoCs design time optimization feature at the boundaries, a standardized industry socket was required, which can address the SoC shorter time-to-market requirements, design issues, and also the subsequent reuse of developed IP cores. OCP is an open industry standard socket interface speci cation used in this research to enable the IP cores reusability across multiple SoC designs. This research work designs and implements clocked OCP interfaces between IP cores and On-Chip Network Fabric (NoC), in single- and multi- frequency clocked domains. The NoC interfaces between IP cores and on-chip network fabric are implemented using the standard network interface structure. It consists of back-end and front-end submodules corresponding to customized interfaces to IP cores or network fabric and OCP Master and Slave entities, respectively. A generic domain interface (DI) protocol is designed which acts as the bridge between back-end and front-end submodules for synchronization and data ow control. Clocked OCP interfaces are synthesized, placed and routed using IBM's 65nm process technology. The implemented designs are veri ed for OCP compliance using SOLV (Sonics OCP Library for Veri cation). Finally, this thesis reports the performance metrics such as design target frequency of operation, latency, area, energy per transaction, and maximum bandwidth across network on-chip for single- and multifrequency clocked designs
