    Sensor fault detection with low computational cost : a proposed neural network-based control scheme

    The paper describes a low computational power method for detecting sensor faults. A typical fault detection unit for multiple sensor fault detection with modelbased approaches, requires a bank of estimators. The estimators can be either observer or artificial intelligence based. The proposed control scheme uses an artificial intelligence approach for the development of the fault detection unit abbreviated as ‘i-FD’. In contrast with the bank-estimators approach the proposed i-FD unit is using only one estimator for multiple sensor fault detection. The efficacy of the scheme is tested on an Electro-Magnetic Suspension (EMS) system and compared with a bank of Kalman estimators in simulation environment

    Sensor-fault tolerance using robust MPC with set-based state estimation and active fault isolation

    In this paper, a sensor fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme using robust model predictive control (MPC) and set theoretic fault detection and isolation (FDI) is proposed. The MPC controller is used to both robustly control the plant and actively guarantee fault isolation (FI). In this scheme, fault detection (FD) is passive by interval observers, while fault isolation (FI) is active by MPC. The advantage of the proposed approach consists in using MPC to actively decouple the effect of sensor faults on the outputs such that one output component only corresponds to one sensor fault in terms of FI, which can utilize the feature of sensor faults for FI.     The design of a sensor fault tolerant system which uses analytical redundancy for the Terminal Configured Vehicle (TCV) research aircraft in a Microwave Landing System (MLS) environment was studied. The fault tolerant system provides reliable estimates for aircraft position, velocity, and attitude in the presence of possible failures in navigation aid instruments and onboard sensors. The estimates, provided by the fault tolerant system, are used by the automated guidance and control system to land the aircraft along a prescribed path. Sensor failures are identified by utilizing the analytic relationship between the various sensor outputs arising from the aircraft equations of motion

    Applied Sensor Fault Detection, Identification and Data Reconstruction

    Sensor fault detection and identification (SFD/I) has attracted considerable attention in military applications, especially when safety- or mission-critical issues are of paramount importance. Here, two readily implementable approaches for SFD/I are proposed through hierarchical clustering and self-organizing map neural networks. The proposed methodologies are capable of detecting sensor faults from a large group of sensors measuring different physical quantities and achieve SFD/I in a single stage. Furthermore, it is possible to reconstruct the measurements expected from the faulted sensor and thereby facilitate improved unit availability. The efficacy of the proposed approaches is demonstrated through the use of measurements from experimental trials on a gas turbine. Ultimately, the underlying principles are readily transferable to other complex industrial and military systems

    A semidefinite relaxation procedure for fault-tolerant observer design

    A fault-tolerant observer design methodology is proposed. The aim is to guarantee a minimum level of closed-loop performance under all possible sensor fault combinations while optimizing performance under the nominal, fault-free condition. A novel approach is proposed to tackle the combinatorial nature of the problem, which is computationally intractable even for a moderate number of sensors, by recasting the problem as a robust performance problem, where the uncertainty set is composed of all combinations of a set of binary variables. A procedure based on an elimination lemma and an extension of a semidefinite relaxation procedure for binary variables is then used to derive sufficient conditions (necessary and sufficient in the case of one binary variable) for the solution of the problem which significantly reduces the number of matrix inequalities needed to solve the problem. The procedure is illustrated by considering a fault-tolerant observer switching scheme in which the observer outputs track the actual sensor fault condition. A numerical example from an electric power application is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the design

    Modeling and fault tolerant control of an electro-hydraulic actuator

    In the modern industry, electro-hydraulic actuators (EHAs) have been applied to various applications for precise position pressure/ force control tasks. However, operating EHAs under sensor faults is one of the critical challenges for the control engineers. For its enormous nonlinear characteristics, sensor fault could lead the catastrophic failure to the overall system or even put human life in danger. Thus in this paper, a study on mathematical modeling and fault tolerant control (FTC) of a typical EHA for tracking control under sensor-fault conditions has been carried out. In the proposed FTC system, the extended Kalman-Bucy unknown input observer (EKBUIO) -based robust sensor fault detection and identification (FDI) module estimates the system states and the time domain fault information. Once a fault is detected, the controller feedback is switched from the faulty sensor to the estimated output from the EKBUIO owing to mask the sensor fault swiftly and retains the system stability. Additionally, considering the tracking accuracy of the EHA system, an efficient brain emotional learning based intelligent controller (BELBIC) is suggested as the main control unit. Effectiveness of the proposed FTC architecture has been investigated by experimenting on a test bed using an EHA in sensor failure conditions

    A Hybrid Sensor Fault Diagnosis for Maintenance in Railway Traction Drives

    Due to the importance of sensors in railway traction drives availability, sensor fault diagnosis has become a key point in order tomove frompreventivemaintenance to condition-basedmaintenance. Most research works are limited to sensor fault detection and isolation, but only a few of them analyze the types of sensor faults, such as offset or gain, with the aim of reconfiguring the sensor in order to implement a fault tolerant system. This article is based on a fusion of model-based and data-driven techniques. First, an observer-based approach, using a Sliding Mode observer, is utilized for sensor fault reconstruction in real time. Then, once the fault is detected, a timewindowof sensormeasurements and sensor fault reconstruction is sent to the remotemaintenance center for fault evaluation. Finally, an offline processing is carried out to discriminate between gain and offset sensor faults, in order to get a maintenance decision-making to reconfigure the sensor during the next train stop. Fault classification is done by means of histograms and statistics. The technique here proposed is applied to the DC-link voltage sensor in a railway traction drive and is validated in a hardware-in-the-loop platform

    Actuator and sensor fault estimation based on a proportional-integral quasi-LPV observer with inexact scheduling parameters

ElsevierThis paper presents a method for actuator and sensor fault estimation based on a proportional-integral observer (PIO) for a class of nonlinear system described by a polytopic quasi-linear parameter varying (qLPV) mathematical model. Contrarily to the traditional approach, which considers measurable or unmeasurable scheduling parameters, this work proposes a methodology that considers inexact scheduling parameters. This condition is present in many physical systems where the scheduling parameters can be affected by noise, offsets, calibration errors, and other factors that have a negative impact on the measurements. A H8 performance criterion is considered in the design in order to guarantee robustness against sensor noise, disturbance, and inexact scheduling parameters. Then, a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) is derived by the use of a quadratic Lyapunov function. The solution of the LMI guarantees asymptotic stability of the PIO. Finally, the performance and applicability of the proposed method are illustrated through a numerical experiment in a nonlinear system.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
