    A new algorithm for dual-rate systems frequency response computation in discrete control systems

    This paper addresses an easy computation of the multiple components of the response to a sinusoidal input of a dual-rate linear time-invariant discrete system from the Bode diagram of LTI systems arising from a lifted representation. Based on those results, a generalized Bode diagram is suggested. Some new conclusions derived from this conceptual interpretation are introduced. This diagram provides a better insight in the frequency-response issues in multivariable control than the standard singular value decomposition of the lifted model. As an application, the output ripple suppression in a multirate control scheme is presented.The work of J.     Dual-rate sampled-data systems. Some interesting consequences from its frequency response analysis

    This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in International Journal of General Systems on JUL 4 2019, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/03081079.2019.1608984[EN] The main goal of this contribution is to introduce a new procedure in order to analyse properly SISO dual-rate systems (DRS) and to provide straightforward answers to some common general questions about this kind of systems. Frequency response analysis based on DRS lifting modelling can lead to interesting results about stability margins or performance prediction. As a novelty, it is explained how to understand DRS frequency response and how to handle it for an easy computation of magnitude and phase margins keeping classical frequency domain methods. There are also some repetitive questions about DRS that can be analysed and answered properly using the results from this contribution: what the optimum relation between sampling periods is or what effects does delay have in a DRS.     Design and implementation of event-based multi-rate controllers for networked control systems

    Tesis por compendio[ES] Con esta tesis se pretende dar solución a algunos de los problemas más habituales que aparecen en los Sistemas de control basados en red (NCS) como son los retardos variables en el tiempo, las pérdidas y el desorden de paquetes, y la restricción de ancho de banda y de recursos computacionales y energéticos de los dispositivos que forman parte del sistema de control. Para ello se ha planteado la integración de técnicas de control multifrecuencial, de control basado en paquetes, de control basado en predictor y de control basado en eventos. Los diseños de control realizados se han simulado utilizando Matlab-Simulink y Truetime, se ha analizado su estabilidad mediante LMIs y QFT, y se han validado experimentalmente en un péndulo invertido, un robot cartesiano 3D y en robots móviles de bajo coste. El artículo 1 aborda el control basado en eventos, el cual minimiza el ancho de banda consumido en el NCS mediante un control basado en eventos periódicos y presenta un método para obtener sus parámetros óptimos para el sistema específico en que se utilice. Los artículos 2, 4 y 6 añaden el control basado en paquetes, así como el control multifrecuencia, que aborda problemas de falta de datos por bajo uso del sensor y los retardos, pérdidas y desórdenes de paquetes en la red. También afrontan, mediante tecnicas de predicción basadas en un filtro de Kalman multifrecuencia variable en el tiempo, los problemas de ruido y perturbaciones, así como la observación de los estados completos del sistema. El artículo 7 hace frente a un modelo no lineal que utiliza las anteriores soluciones junto con un filtro de Kalman extendido para presentar otro tipo de estructura para un vehículo autónomo que, gracias a la información futura obtenida mediante estas técnicas, puede realizar de forma remota tareas de alto nivel como es la toma de decisiones y la monitorización de variables. Los artículos 3 y 5, presentan una forma de obtener y analizar la respuesta en frecuencia de sistemas SISO multifrecuencia y estudian su comportamiento ante ciertas incertidumbres o problemas en la red haciendo uso de procedimientos QFT.[CA] Amb aquesta tesi es pretén donar solució a alguns dels problemes més habituals que apareixen als Sistemes de Control Basats en xarxa (NCS) com son els retards d'accés i transferència variables en el temps, les pèrdues y desordenament de paquets, i la restricció d'ampli de banda així com de recursos computacionals i energètics dels dispositius que foment part del sistema de control. Per tal de resoldre'ls s'ha plantejat la integració de tècniques de control multifreqüencial, de control basat en paquets, de control basat en predictor i de control basat en events. Els dissenys de control realitzats s'han simulat fent ús de Matlab-Simulink i de TrueTime, s'ha analitzat la seua estabilitat mitjançant LMIs i QFT, i s'han validat experimentalment en un pèndul invertit, un robot cartesià 3D i en robots mòbils de baix cost. L'article 1 aborda el control basat en events, el qual minimitza l'ampli de banda consumit a l'NCS mitjançant un control basat en events periòdics i presenta un mètode per a obtindré els seus paràmetres òptims per al sistema específic en el qual s'utilitza. Els problemes de soroll i pertorbacions, així com la observació dels estats complets del sistema. L'article 7 fa referència a un model no lineal que utilitza les anteriors solucions junt a un filtre de Kalman estès per a presentar altre tipus d'estructura per a un vehicle autònom que, gracies a la informació futura obtinguda mitjançant aquestes tècniques, pot realitzar de manera remota tasques d'alt nivell com son la presa de decisions i la monitorització de variables. Els articles 3 y 5 presenten la manera d'obtindre i analitzar la resposta en frequencia de sistemes SISO multifreqüència i estudien el seu comportament front a certes incerteses o problemes en la xarxa fent us de procediments QFT.[EN] This thesis attempts to solve some of the most frequent issues that appear in Networked Control Systems (NCS), such as time-varying delays, packet losses and packet disorders and the bandwidth limitation. Other frequent problems are scarce computational and energy resources of the local system devices. Thus, it is proposed to integrate multirate control, packet-based control, predictor-based control and event-based control techniques. The control designs have been simulated using Matlab-Simulink and Truetime, the stability has been analysed by LMIs and QFT, and the experimental validation has been done on an inverted pendulum, a 3D cartesian robot and in low-cost mobile robots. Paper 1 addresses event-based control, which minimizes the bandwidth consumed in NCS through a periodic event-triggered control and presents a method to obtain the optimal parameters for the specific system used. Papers 2, 4 and 6 include packet-based control and multirate control, addressing problems such as network delays, packet dropouts and packet disorders, and the scarce data due to low sensor usage in order to save battery in sensing tasks and transmissions of the sensed data. Also addressed, is how despite the existence of measurement noise and disturbances, time-varying dual-rate Kalman filter based prediction techniques observe the complete state of the system. Paper 7 tackles a non-linear model that uses all the previous solutions together with an extended Kalman filter to present another type of structure for an autonomous vehicle that, due to future information obtained through these techniques, can remotely carry out high level tasks, such as decision making and monitoring of variables.     Increasing eigenstructure assignment design degree of freedom using lifting

    This paper presents the exposition of an output-lifting eigenstructure assignment (EA) design framework, wherein the available EA design degrees of freedom (DoF) is significantly increased, and the desired eigenstructure of a single-rate full state feedback solution can be achieved within an output feedback system. A structural mapping is introduced to release the output-lifting causality constraint. Additionally, the available design DoF can be further enlarged via involving the input-lifting into the output-lifting EA framework. The newly induced design DoF can be utilised to calculate a structurally constrained, causal gain matrix which will maintain the same assignment capability. In this paper, the robustification of the output-lifting EA is also proposed, which allows a trade-off between performance and robustness in the presence of structured model uncertainties to be established. A lateral flight control benchmark in the EA literature and a numerical example are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the design framework

    A Multirate Control Strategy to the Slow Sensors Problem: An Interactive Simulation Tool for Controller Assisted Design

    [EN] In many control applications, the sensor technology used for the measurement of the variable to be controlled is not able to maintain a restricted sampling period. In this context, the assumption of regular and uniform sampling pattern is questionable. Moreover, if the control action updating can be faster than the output measurement frequency in order to fulfill the proposed closed loop behavior, the solution is usually a multirate controller. There are some known aspects to be careful of when a multirate system (MR) is going to be designed. The proper multiplicity between input-output sampling periods, the proper controller structure, the existence of ripples and others issues need to be considered. A useful way to save time and achieve good results is to have an assisted computer design tool. An interactive simulation tool to deal with MR seems to be the right solution. In this paper this kind of simulation application is presented. It allows an easy understanding of the performance degrading or improvement when changing the multirate sampling pattern parameters. The tool was developed using Sysquake, a Matlab-like language with fast execution and powerful graphic facilities. It can be delivered as an executable. In the paper a detailed explanation of MR treatment is also included and the design of four different MR controllers with flexible structure to be adapted to different schemes will also be presented. The Smith's predictor in these MR schemes is also explained, justified and used when time delays appear.     Control analysis and design of medium voltage converter with multirate techniques

    This work aims to unify the current knowledge about multirate controllers with design techniques for grid-tied converters, in this occasion, connected to Medium Voltage AC grid. Therefore, the multirate contributions, that have been given so far, are studied, as well as everything related to modulation techniques for power converters. The temporal implications of the DSPWM actuator will be correlated to multirate analysis, in addition to possible alternatives for applications with a lower sampling frequency than modulation one. Finalizing with explanations and result demonstrations of controllers working between two frequencies or rates, by means of the available power converter in laboratory.Este trabajo pretende unir el conocimiento actual sobre controladores multitasa o multifrecuencia (multirate) con técnicas de diseño para convertidores conectados a la red, en este caso concreto, a la red alterna (AC) de Media Tensión. Por tanto, se estudian las contribuciones multirate realizadas hasta la fecha, así como todo lo relacionado con la modulación de la señal de control para los convertidores.     TÉCNICAS DE ELIMINACIÓN DEL RIZADO INTERMUESTREO EN CONTROL MULTIFRECUENCIAL BASADO EN MODELADO POR BLOQUES ENTRADA-SALIDA

    El trabajo realizado trata de la representación por bloques de los sistemas multifrecuenciales. En concreto se utiliza la técnica conocida como BMIO (Block Multirate Input Output) desarrollada originalmente en el departamento DISA de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia por el Dr. Pedro Albertos. Esta técnica de probada eficacia en la etapa de modelado de sistemas con distinta frecuencia de entrada-salida e incluso en el caso de muestreo periódicamente variable en el tiempo, encuentra una dificultad en la etapa de diseño. Se trata de la presencia de rizado intermuestreo que también aparece en un buen número de procedimientos de diseño en el campo del control multifrecuencial. En concreto, en esta Tesis, tras un estudio detallado de diversas técnicas multifrecuencia, se establece diversas alternativas para la supresión de estos rizados que ciertamente reducen considerablemente la potencia de estas técnicas de control. Además, se realiza un completo análisis posterior de las metodologías empleadas (estabilidad y robustez), aportando ciertos refinamientos a considerar. Finalmente se añade un paquete de diseño asistido por computador en la plataforma MATLAB que facilita la labor en este campo de los ingenieros de proceso que decidan utilizar estas técnicas.Ramos Díaz, FA.     The analysis and design of multirate sampled-data feedback systems via a polynomial approach

    This thesis describes the modelling, analysis and design of multirate sampled-data feed-back via the polynomial equations approach. The key theoretical contribution constitutes the embedding of the principles underpinning and algebra related to the switch and frequency decomposition procedures within a modern control framework, thereby warranting the use of available computer-aided control systems design software. A salient feature of the proposed approach consequently entails the designation of system models that possess dual time- and frequency-domain interpretations. Expositionally, the thesis initially addresses scalar systems excited by deterministic inputs, prior to introducing stochastic signals and culminates in an analysis of multivariable configurations. In all instances, overall system representations are formulated by amalgamating models of individual sub-systems. The polynomial system descriptions are shown subsequently to be compatible with the Linear Quadratic Gaussian and Generalised Predictive Control feedback system synthesis methods provide causality issues are dealt with appropriately. From a practical perspective, the polynomial equations approach proffers an alternative methodology to the state-variable techniques customarily utilised in this context and affords the insights and intuitive appeal associated with the use of transfer function models. Numerical examples are provided throughout the thesis to illustrate theoretical developments

    The design and implementation of a wideband digital radio receiver

    Historically radio has been implemented using largely analogue circuitry. Improvements in mixed signal and digital signal processing technology are rapidly leading towards a largely digital approach, with down-conversion and filtering moving to the digital signal processing domain. Advantages of this technology include increased performance and functionality, as well as reduced cost. Wideband receivers place the heaviest demands on both mixed signal and digital signal processing technology, requiring high spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) and signal processing bandwidths. This dissertation investigates the extent to which current digital technology is able to meet these demands and compete with the proven architectures of analogue receivers. A scalable generalised digital radio receiver capable of operating in the HF and VHF bands was designed, implemented and tested, yielding instantaneous bandwidths in excess of 10 MHz with a spurious-free dynamic range exceeding 80 decibels below carrier (dBc). The results achieved reflect favourably on the digital receiver architecture. While the necessity for minimal analogue circuitry will possibly always exist, digital radio architectures are currently able to compete with analogue counterparts. The digital receiver is simple to manufacture, based on the use of largely commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, and exhibits extreme flexibility and high performance when compared with comparably priced analogue receivers
