The result is significant difficulty in software reuse, portability across platforms, and an increased overall development effort. The appearance of a shared directory of unordered queues can be provided by integrating heterogeneous computers transparently. This integration provides a conducive environment for parallel and distributed application development, by abstracting the issues of hardware and communication. Object oriented technology is exploited to provide this seamless environment

MOOC and OER: identity management
Open educational resources (OER) and massive open online courses (MOOC) are new and emerging issues in the international higher education context. Under the exponential growth of the supply of courses and related publications, the purpose of this chapter is to foster scientific discussion on the socio-cultural and economic impacts, as well as its technological and pedagogical implications. Supported by the methodological typology of bibliographical studies, systematized interpretative-critical analysis based on review of the concepts, and principles guiding OER and MOOC, the authors' reflections show that the enlargement terminologies without epistemological delimitation have provoked theoretical and practical mistakes. In the final considerations, the authors systematize broader problematizations around the open educational practices in universities aimed to five dimensions: spatio-time-content, theoretical models, principles of pedagogical innovation, economic aspects, and fundamentals of collaborative culture.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Developing Australian Academics' Capacity: Supporting the Adoption of Open Educational Practices in Curriculum Design
This seed project initiative addressed an identified gap in Australian higher education between awareness of open educational practices (OEP) and implementation of OEP, particularly the production, adaptation and use of open educational resources (OER) to support the design of innovative, engaging and agile curriculum. In response, the authors aimed to design, develop, pilot and evaluate a free, open and online professional development course focused on supporting curriculum design in higher education. The specific aim of the course - Curriculum design for open education (CD4OE) - is to develop the capacity of academics in Australia to adopt and incorporate OER and OEP into curriculum development, for more effective and efficient learning and teaching across the sector
Conflict Resolution in E-HRM Environments
There have been studies on conflict resolutions but many focused on regional inter-tribe and international
conflicts between or among nations of the world. Only very few have written about industrial conflict recently,
even these few did not touch the mechanism of resolving conflicts in the organization in depth. Therefore,
this article will focus on various conflict resolution mechanisms and the three major models of conflict
resolutions—namely distributive bargaining, integrated bargaining, and interactive problem solving as given
by Cross, Susan, Rosenthal, and Robert (1999). To do this effectively, we will explore the available literature
on the antecedents of conflicts in human resource systems. Varieties of views and notions held by
individuals and groups in respect of the role and the consequences of conflicts in the functioning of humans
in our modern complex organizations will be considered. The consequences of conflicts on interpersonal,
inter-group, and inter-organizational processes, when conflict may empower, distress, or lubricate the
wheels of human interaction in the context of human resource management will be traced. The views of
experts, professionals and academicians on how and why conflicts should be handled to ensure a healthier
and conducive environment to work will be traced
Towards understanding software: 15 years in the SEL
For 15 years, the Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL) at GSFC has been carrying out studies and experiments for the purpose of understanding, assessing, and improving software, and software processes within a production software environment. The SEL comprises three major organizations: (1) the GSFC Flight Dynamics Division; (2) the University of Maryland Computer Science Department; and (3) the Computer Sciences Corporation Flight Dynamics Technology Group. These organizations have jointly carried out several hundred software studies, producing hundreds of reports, papers, and documents: all describing some aspect of the software engineering technology that has undergone analysis in the flight dynamics environment. The studies range from small controlled experiments (such as analyzing the effectiveness of code reading versus functional testing) to large, multiple-project studies (such as assessing the impacts of Ada on a production environment). The key findings that NASA feels have laid the foundation for ongoing and future software development and research activities are summarized
An Action Research Model for the Management of Change in Continuing Professional Distance Education
This paper proposes an action research model as basis for the management of change in continuing professional distance education (CPDE). The model proposed emerged from the need to manage a complex change process from traditional paper-based distance education to e-learning. In order to illustrate and support the model proposed, this paper describes and discusses such a change process in a CPDE Masters programme.
The Educational Management Action Research (EMAR) model conjugates pedagogical thinking, curriculum design and organisational context. This model facilitates dialogue of all parties engaged in the design and delivery of CPDE. This enables educational managers to effectively lead change in their courses
Composite suspended sediment particles and flocculation in glacial meltwaters: preliminary evidence from Alpine and Himalayan basins
Research over the last decade has shown that the suspended sediment loads of many rivers are dominated by composite
particles. These particles are also known as aggregates or flocs, and are commonly made up of constituent mineral
particles, which evidence a wide range of grain sizes, and organic matter. The resulting in situ or effective particle
size characteristics of fluvial suspended sediment exert a major control on all processes of entrainment, transport and
deposition. The significance of composite suspended sediment particles in glacial meltwater streams has, however, not
been established. Existing data on the particle size characteristics of suspended sediment in glacial meltwaters relate
to the dispersed mineral fraction (absolute particle size), which, for certain size fractions, may bear little relationship
to the effective or in situ distribution. Existing understanding of composite particle formation within freshwater
environments would suggest that in-stream flocculation processes do not take place in glacial meltwater systems
because of the absence of organic binding agents. However, we report preliminary scanning electron microscopy data
for one Alpine and two Himalayan glaciers that show composite particles are present in the suspended sediment
load of the meltwater system. The genesis and structure of these composite particles and their constituent grain size
characteristics are discussed. We present evidence for the existence of both aggregates, or composite particles whose
features are largely inherited from source materials, and flocs, which represent composite particles produced by instream
flocculation processes. In the absence of organic materials, the latter may result solely from electrochemical
flocculation in the meltwater sediment system. This type of floc formation has not been reported previously in the
freshwater fluvial environment. Further work is needed to test the wider significance of these data and to investigate
the effective particle size characteristics of suspended sediment associated with high concentration outburst events.
Such events make a major contribution to suspended sediment fluxes in meltwater streams and may provide conditions
that are conducive to composite particle formation by flocculation
Generating target system specifications from a domain model using CLIPS
The quest for reuse in software engineering is still being pursued and researchers are actively investigating the domain modeling approach to software construction. There are several domain modeling efforts reported in the literature and they all agree that the components that are generated from domain modeling are more conducive to reuse. Once a domain model is created, several target systems can be generated by tailoring the domain model or by evolving the domain model and then tailoring it according to the specified requirements. This paper presents the Evolutionary Domain Life Cycle (EDLC) paradigm in which a domain model is created using multiple views, namely, aggregation hierarchy, generalization/specialization hierarchies, object communication diagrams and state transition diagrams. The architecture of the Knowledge Based Requirements Elicitation Tool (KBRET) which is used to generate target system specifications is also presented. The preliminary version of KBRET is implemented in the C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS)
