    Run-time management for future MPSoC platforms

    In recent years, we are witnessing the dawning of the Multi-Processor Systemon- Chip (MPSoC) era. In essence, this era is triggered by the need to handle more complex applications, while reducing overall cost of embedded (handheld) devices. This cost will mainly be determined by the cost of the hardware platform and the cost of designing applications for that platform. The cost of a hardware platform will partly depend on its production volume. In turn, this means that ??exible, (easily) programmable multi-purpose platforms will exhibit a lower cost. A multi-purpose platform not only requires ??exibility, but should also combine a high performance with a low power consumption. To this end, MPSoC devices integrate computer architectural properties of various computing domains. Just like large-scale parallel and distributed systems, they contain multiple heterogeneous processing elements interconnected by a scalable, network-like structure. This helps in achieving scalable high performance. As in most mobile or portable embedded systems, there is a need for low-power operation and real-time behavior. The cost of designing applications is equally important. Indeed, the actual value of future MPSoC devices is not contained within the embedded multiprocessor IC, but in their capability to provide the user of the device with an amount of services or experiences. So from an application viewpoint, MPSoCs are designed to ef??ciently process multimedia content in applications like video players, video conferencing, 3D gaming, augmented reality, etc. Such applications typically require a lot of processing power and a signi??cant amount of memory. To keep up with ever evolving user needs and with new application standards appearing at a fast pace, MPSoC platforms need to be be easily programmable. Application scalability, i.e. the ability to use just enough platform resources according to the user requirements and with respect to the device capabilities is also an important factor. Hence scalability, ??exibility, real-time behavior, a high performance, a low power consumption and, ??nally, programmability are key components in realizing the success of MPSoC platforms. The run-time manager is logically located between the application layer en the platform layer. It has a crucial role in realizing these MPSoC requirements. As it abstracts the platform hardware, it improves platform programmability. By deciding on resource assignment at run-time and based on the performance requirements of the user, the needs of the application and the capabilities of the platform, it contributes to ??exibility, scalability and to low power operation. As it has an arbiter function between different applications, it enables real-time behavior. This thesis details the key components of such an MPSoC run-time manager and provides a proof-of-concept implementation. These key components include application quality management algorithms linked to MPSoC resource management mechanisms and policies, adapted to the provided MPSoC platform services. First, we describe the role, the responsibilities and the boundary conditions of an MPSoC run-time manager in a generic way. This includes a de??nition of the multiprocessor run-time management design space, a description of the run-time manager design trade-offs and a brief discussion on how these trade-offs affect the key MPSoC requirements. This design space de??nition and the trade-offs are illustrated based on ongoing research and on existing commercial and academic multiprocessor run-time management solutions. Consequently, we introduce a fast and ef??cient resource allocation heuristic that considers FPGA fabric properties such as fragmentation. In addition, this thesis introduces a novel task assignment algorithm for handling soft IP cores denoted as hierarchical con??guration. Hierarchical con??guration managed by the run-time manager enables easier application design and increases the run-time spatial mapping freedom. In turn, this improves the performance of the resource assignment algorithm. Furthermore, we introduce run-time task migration components. We detail a new run-time task migration policy closely coupled to the run-time resource assignment algorithm. In addition to detailing a design-environment supported mechanism that enables moving tasks between an ISP and ??ne-grained recon??gurable hardware, we also propose two novel task migration mechanisms tailored to the Network-on-Chip environment. Finally, we propose a novel mechanism for task migration initiation, based on reusing debug registers in modern embedded microprocessors. We propose a reactive on-chip communication management mechanism. We show that by exploiting an injection rate control mechanism it is possible to provide a communication management system capable of providing a soft (reactive) QoS in a NoC. We introduce a novel, platform independent run-time algorithm to perform quality management, i.e. to select an application quality operating point at run-time based on the user requirements and the available platform resources, as reported by the resource manager. This contribution also proposes a novel way to manage the interaction between the quality manager and the resource manager. In order to have a the realistic, reproducible and ??exible run-time manager testbench with respect to applications with multiple quality levels and implementation tradev offs, we have created an input data generation tool denoted Pareto Surfaces For Free (PSFF). The the PSFF tool is, to the best of our knowledge, the ??rst tool that generates multiple realistic application operating points either based on pro??ling information of a real-life application or based on a designer-controlled random generator. Finally, we provide a proof-of-concept demonstrator that combines these concepts and shows how these mechanisms and policies can operate for real-life situations. In addition, we show that the proposed solutions can be integrated into existing platform operating systems

    Verification of the Performance Properties of Embedded Streaming Applications via Constraint-Based Scheduling

    RÉSUMÉ Les capacités et, en conséquence, la complexité de la conception de systèmes embarqués ont énormément augmenté ces dernières années, surfant sur la vague de la loi de Moore. Au contraire, le temps de mise en marché a diminué, ce qui oblige les concepteurs à faire face à certains défis, ce qui les poussent à adopter de nouvelles méthodes de conception pour accroître leur productivité. En réponse à ces nouvelles pressions, les systèmes modernes ont évolué vers des technologies multiprocesseurs sur puce. De nouvelles architectures sont apparues dans le multitraitement sur puce afin d'utiliser les énormes progrès des technologies de fabrication. Les systèmes multiprocesseurs sur puce (MPSoCs) ont été adoptés comme plates-formes appropriées pour l'exécution d'applications embarquées complexes. Pour réduire le coût de la plate-forme matérielle, les applications partagent des ressources, ce qui peut entraîner des interférences dans le temps entre les applications dues à des conflits dans la demande des ressources. Les caractéristiques d'un SoC typique imposent de grands défis sur la vérification SoC à deux égards. Tout d'abord, la grande échelle de l'intégration du matériel mène à des interactions matériel-matériel sophistiquées. Puisqu’un SoC a de multiples composants, les interactions entre ceux-ci pourraient donner lieu à des propriétés émergentes qui ne sont pas présentes dans un seul composant. En second lieu, l'introduction de logiciels dans le comportement du matériel mène à des interactions matériel-logiciel sophistiqué. Puisqu’un SoC a au moins un processeur, le logiciel constitue une nouvelle dimension des comportements du SoC et donc apporte une nouvelle dimension à la vérification. Cela rend la vérification d'une tâche difficile, en particulier pour les applications de communication et de multimédia. Cela est dû à des contraintes non-fonctionnelles des modules matériel et logiciel, tels que la vitesse du processeur, la taille de la mémoire tampon, le budget de l'énergie, la politique de planification, et la combinaison de multiples applications. Cette thèse préconise la programmation par contraintes (CP) comme un outil puissant pour la vérification des mesures de performance de MPSoCs. Dans ce travail, nous avons considéré des applications de diffusion sur l'architecture cible d’un système-sur-puce (MPSoC) multi-processeur comme un problème d'ordonnancement à base de contraintes. Nous l’avons testé séparément et en interaction avec d'autres types d'applications. L'idée est de créer un scénario au niveau du système qui prend en compte le flux de travail au niveau du système par rapport aux ressources du système et des exigences de performance, à savoir les délais de la tâche, le temps de réponse, le CPU et l’utilisation de la mémoire, ainsi que la taille de la mémoire tampon. Plus précisément, nous examinons si le comportement des différentes interactions entre les composants du système d'exécution des tâches différentes peut être efficacement exprimé comme un problème d'ordonnancement à base de contraintes sur l'espace des entrées possibles du système, afin de déterminer si nous pouvons traiter des cas similaires d'échec en utilisant ce modèle. Résoudre ce problème consiste à trouver une meilleure façon d’inspecter le système en cours de vérification dans une phase de conception qui arrive très tôt et dans un délai beaucoup plus raisonnable. Notre approche proposée a été testée avec diverses applications, différents flux d'entrée et des architectures différentes. Nous avons construit notre modèle en prenant en considération les architectures existantes sur le marché, des applications choisies qui sont en courante et comparé les résultats de notre modèle avec les résultats provenant de l'exécution des applications réelles sur le système. Les résultats montrent que la méthode permet de déterminer les conditions de défaillance du système dans une fraction du temps nécessaire à la vérification par simulation. Il donne à l’ingénieur d’essai la possibilité d'explorer l'espace de conception et d'en déduire la meilleure politique. Il contribue également à choisir une architecture appropriée pour des applications en cours d'exécution.----------ABSTRACT The abilities and, accordingly, the design complexity of embedded systems have expanded enormously in recent years, riding the wave of Moore’s law. On the contrary, time to market has shrunk, forcing challenges onto designers who in turn, seek to adopt new design methods to increase their productivity. As a response to these new pressures, modern-day systems have moved towards on-chip multiprocessing technologies. New architectures have emerged in on-chip multiprocessing in order to utilize the tremendous advances of fabrication technology. Multiprocessor Systems on a Chip (MPSoCs) were adopted as suitable platforms for executing complex embedded applications. To reduce the cost of the hardware platform, applications share resources, which may result in inter-application timing interference due to resource request conflicts. The features of a typical SoC impose great challenges on SoC verification in two respects. First, the large scale of hardware integration leads to sophisticated hardware-hardware interactions. Since a SoC has multiple components, the interactions between them could give rise to emerging properties that are not present in any single component. Second, the introduction of software into hardware behaviour leads to sophisticated hardware-software interactions. Since an SoC has at least one processor, software forms a new dimension of the SoC’s behaviours and hence brings a new dimension to verification. This makes verification a challenging task, in particular for communication and multimedia applications. This is due to the non-functional constraints of hardware and software modules, such as processor speed, buffer size, energy budget, and scheduling policy, and the combination of multiple applications. This thesis advocates Constraint Programming (CP) as a powerful tool for the verification of performance metrics of MPSoCs. In this work, we mapped streaming applications onto a target Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) architecture as a constraint-based scheduling problem. We tested it separately and in interaction with other application types. The idea is to create a system-level scenario that takes into account the system level work-flow with respect to System resources and performance requirements, namely task deadlines, response time, CPU and memory usage, and buffer size. Specifically, we investigate whether the behaviour of different interactions among system components executing different tasks can be effectively re-expressed as a constraint-based scheduling problem over the space of possible inputs to the system, finding if we can address similar cases of failure using this model. Solving this problem means finding a better way to investigate and verify the System under verification in a very early design stage and in a much more reasonable time. Our proposed approach was tested with various applications, different input streams and different architectures. We built our model for existing architectures on the market running chosen applications and compared our model results with the results coming from running the actual applications on the system. Results show that the methodology is able to identify system failure conditions in a fraction of the time needed by simulation-based verification. It gives the Test Engineer the ability to explore the design space and deduce the best policy. It also helps choose a proper architecture for the applications running

    Self-adaptivity of applications on network on chip multiprocessors: the case of fault-tolerant Kahn process networks

    Technology scaling accompanied with higher operating frequencies and the ability to integrate more functionality in the same chip has been the driving force behind delivering higher performance computing systems at lower costs. Embedded computing systems, which have been riding the same wave of success, have evolved into complex architectures encompassing a high number of cores interconnected by an on-chip network (usually identified as Multiprocessor System-on-Chip). However these trends are hindered by issues that arise as technology scaling continues towards deep submicron scales. Firstly, growing complexity of these systems and the variability introduced by process technologies make it ever harder to perform a thorough optimization of the system at design time. Secondly, designers are faced with a reliability wall that emerges as age-related degradation reduces the lifetime of transistors, and as the probability of defects escaping post-manufacturing testing is increased. In this thesis, we take on these challenges within the context of streaming applications running in network-on-chip based parallel (not necessarily homogeneous) systems-on-chip that adopt the no-remote memory access model. In particular, this thesis tackles two main problems: (1) fault-aware online task remapping, (2) application-level self-adaptation for quality management. For the former, by viewing fault tolerance as a self-adaptation aspect, we adopt a cross-layer approach that aims at graceful performance degradation by addressing permanent faults in processing elements mostly at system-level, in particular by exploiting redundancy available in multi-core platforms. We propose an optimal solution based on an integer linear programming formulation (suitable for design time adoption) as well as heuristic-based solutions to be used at run-time. We assess the impact of our approach on the lifetime reliability. We propose two recovery schemes based on a checkpoint-and-rollback and a rollforward technique. For the latter, we propose two variants of a monitor-controller- adapter loop that adapts application-level parameters to meet performance goals. We demonstrate not only that fault tolerance and self-adaptivity can be achieved in embedded platforms, but also that it can be done without incurring large overheads. In addressing these problems, we present techniques which have been realized (depending on their characteristics) in the form of a design tool, a run-time library or a hardware core to be added to the basic architecture

    MULTI-SCALE SCHEDULING TECHNIQUES FOR SIGNAL PROCESSING SYSTEMS

    A variety of hardware platforms for signal processing has emerged, from distributed systems such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) to parallel systems such as Multicore Programmable Digital Signal Processors (PDSPs), Multicore General Purpose Processors (GPPs), and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to heterogeneous combinations of parallel and distributed devices. When a signal processing application is implemented on one of those platforms, the performance critically depends on the scheduling techniques, which in general allocate computation and communication resources for competing processing tasks in the application to optimize performance metrics such as power consumption, throughput, latency, and accuracy. Signal processing systems implemented on such platforms typically involve multiple levels of processing and communication hierarchy, such as network-level, chip-level, and processor-level in a structural context, and application-level, subsystem-level, component-level, and operation- or instruction-level in a behavioral context. In this thesis, we target scheduling issues that carefully address and integrate scheduling considerations at different levels of these structural and behavioral hierarchies. The core contributions of the thesis include the following. Considering both the network-level and chip-level, we have proposed an adaptive scheduling algorithm for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) designed for event detection. Our algorithm exploits discrepancies among the detection accuracy of individual sensors, which are derived from a collaborative training process, to allow each sensor to operate in a more energy efficient manner while the network satisfies given constraints on overall detection accuracy. Considering the chip-level and processor-level, we incorporated both temperature and process variations to develop new scheduling methods for throughput maximization on multicore processors. In particular, we studied how to process a large number of threads with high speed and without violating a given maximum temperature constraint. We targeted our methods to multicore processors in which the cores may operate at different frequencies and different levels of leakage. We develop speed selection and thread assignment schedulers based on the notion of a core's steady state temperature. Considering the application-level, component-level and operation-level, we developed a new dataflow based design flow within the targeted dataflow interchange format (TDIF) design tool. Our new multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC)-oriented design flow, called TDIF-PPG, is geared towards analysis and mapping of embedded DSP applications on MPSoCs. An important feature of TDIF-PPG is its capability to integrate graph level parallelism and actor level parallelism into the application mapping process. Here, graph level parallelism is exposed by the dataflow graph application representation in TDIF, and actor level parallelism is modeled by a novel model for multiprocessor dataflow graph implementation that we call the Parallel Processing Group (PPG) model. Building on the contribution above, we formulated a new type of parallel task scheduling problem called Parallel Actor Scheduling (PAS) for chip-level MPSoC mapping of DSP systems that are represented as synchronous dataflow (SDF) graphs. In contrast to traditional SDF-based scheduling techniques, which focus on exploiting graph level (inter-actor) parallelism, the PAS problem targets the integrated exploitation of both intra- and inter-actor parallelism for platforms in which individual actors can be parallelized across multiple processing units. We address a special case of the PAS problem in which all of the actors in the DSP application or subsystem being optimized can be parallelized. For this special case, we develop and experimentally evaluate a two-phase scheduling framework with three work flows --- particle swarm optimization with a mixed integer programming formulation, particle swarm optimization with a simulated annealing engine, and particle swarm optimization with a fast heuristic based on list scheduling. Then, we extend our scheduling framework to support general PAS problem which considers the actors cannot be parallelized

    ControlPULP: A RISC-V On-Chip Parallel Power Controller for Many-Core HPC Processors with FPGA-Based Hardware-In-The-Loop Power and Thermal Emulation

    High-Performance Computing (HPC) processors are nowadays integrated Cyber-Physical Systems demanding complex and high-bandwidth closed-loop power and thermal control strategies. To efficiently satisfy real-time multi-input multi-output (MIMO) optimal power requirements, high-end processors integrate an on-die power controller system (PCS). While traditional PCSs are based on a simple microcontroller (MCU)-class core, more scalable and flexible PCS architectures are required to support advanced MIMO control algorithms for managing the ever-increasing number of cores, power states, and process, voltage, and temperature variability. This paper presents ControlPULP, an open-source, HW/SW RISC-V parallel PCS platform consisting of a single-core MCU with fast interrupt handling coupled with a scalable multi-core programmable cluster accelerator and a specialized DMA engine for the parallel acceleration of real-time power management policies. ControlPULP relies on FreeRTOS to schedule a reactive power control firmware (PCF) application layer. We demonstrate ControlPULP in a power management use-case targeting a next-generation 72-core HPC processor. We first show that the multi-core cluster accelerates the PCF, achieving 4.9x speedup compared to single-core execution, enabling more advanced power management algorithms within the control hyper-period at a shallow area overhead, about 0.1% the area of a modern HPC CPU die. We then assess the PCS and PCF by designing an FPGA-based, closed-loop emulation framework that leverages the heterogeneous SoCs paradigm, achieving DVFS tracking with a mean deviation within 3% the plant's thermal design power (TDP) against a software-equivalent model-in-the-loop approach. Finally, we show that the proposed PCF compares favorably with an industry-grade control algorithm under computational-intensive workloads.Comment: 33 pages, 11 figure

    Towards Efficient Resource Allocation for Embedded Systems

    Das Hauptthema ist die dynamische Ressourcenverwaltung in eingebetteten Systemen, insbesondere die Verwaltung von Rechenzeit und Netzwerkverkehr auf einem MPSoC. Die Idee besteht darin, eine Pipeline für die Verarbeitung von Mobiler Kommunikation auf dem Chip dynamisch zu schedulen, um die Effizienz der Hardwareressourcen zu verbessern, ohne den Ressourcenverbrauch des dynamischen Schedulings dramatisch zu erhöhen. Sowohl Software- als auch Hardwaremodule werden auf Hotspots im Ressourcenverbrauch untersucht und optimiert, um diese zu entfernen. Da Applikationen im Bereich der Signalverarbeitung normalerweise mit Hilfe von SDF-Diagrammen beschrieben werden können, wird deren dynamisches Scheduling optimiert, um den Ressourcenverbrauch gegenüber dem üblicherweise verwendeten statischen Scheduling zu verbessern. Es wird ein hybrider dynamischer Scheduler vorgestellt, der die Vorteile von Processing-Networks und der Planung von Task-Graphen kombiniert. Es ermöglicht dem Scheduler, ein Gleichgewicht zwischen der Parallelisierung der Berechnung und der Zunahme des dynamischen Scheduling-Aufands optimal abzuwägen. Der resultierende dynamisch erstellte Schedule reduziert den Ressourcenverbrauch um etwa 50%, wobei die Laufzeit im Vergleich zu einem statischen Schedule nur um 20% erhöht wird. Zusätzlich wird ein verteilter dynamischer SDF-Scheduler vorgeschlagen, der das Scheduling in verschiedene Teile zerlegt, die dann zu einer Pipeline verbunden werden, um mehrere parallele Prozessoren einzubeziehen. Jeder Scheduling-Teil wird zu einem Cluster mit Load-Balancing erweitert, um die Anzahl der parallel laufenden Scheduling-Jobs weiter zu erhöhen. Auf diese Weise wird dem vorhandene Engpass bei dem dynamischen Scheduling eines zentralisierten Schedulers entgegengewirkt, sodass 7x mehr Prozessoren mit dem Pipelined-Clustered-Dynamic-Scheduler für eine typische Signalverarbeitungsanwendung verwendet werden können. Das neue dynamische Scheduling-System setzt das Vorhandensein von drei verschiedenen Kommunikationsmodi zwischen den Verarbeitungskernen voraus. Bei der Emulation auf Basis des häufig verwendeten RDMA-Protokolls treten Leistungsprobleme auf. Sehr gut kann RDMA für einmalige Punkt-zu-Punkt-Datenübertragungen verwendet werden, wie sie bei der Ausführung von Task-Graphen verwendet werden. Process-Networks verwenden normalerweise Datenströme mit hohem Volumen und hoher Bandbreite. Es wird eine FIFO-basierte Kommunikationslösung vorgestellt, die einen zyklischen Puffer sowohl im Sender als auch im Empfänger implementiert, um diesen Bedarf zu decken. Die Pufferbehandlung und die Datenübertragung zwischen ihnen erfolgen ausschließlich in Hardware, um den Software-Overhead aus der Anwendung zu entfernen. Die Implementierung verbessert die Zugriffsverwaltung mehrerer Nutzer auf flächen-effiziente Single-Port Speichermodule. Es werden 0,8 der theoretisch möglichen Bandbreite, die normalerweise nur mit flächenmäßig teureren Dual-Port-Speichern erreicht wird. Der dritte Kommunikationsmodus definiert eine einfache Message-Passing-Implementierung, die ohne einen Verbindungszustand auskommt. Dieser Modus wird für eine effiziente prozessübergreifende Kommunikation des verteilten Scheduling-Systems und der engen Ansteuerung der restlichen Prozessoren benötigt. Eine Flusskontrolle in Hardware stellt sicher, dass eine große Anzahl von Sendern Nachrichten an denselben Empfänger senden kann. Dabei wird garantiert, dass alle Nachrichten korrekt empfangen werden, ohne dass eine Verbindung hergestellt werden muss und die Nachrichtenlaufzeit gering bleibt. Die Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Optimierung des Codesigns von Hardware und Software, um die kompromisslose Ressourceneffizienz der dynamischen SDF-Graphen-Planung zu erhöhen. Since signal processing can usually be described with the help of static data flow (SDF) graphs, the dynamic handling of those is optimized to improve resource consumption over the commonly used static scheduling approach. A hybrid dynamic scheduler is presented that combines benefits from both processing networks and task graph scheduling. It allows the scheduler to optimally balance parallelization of computation and addition of dynamic scheduling overhead. The resulting dynamically created schedule reduces resource consumption by about 50%, with a runtime increase of only 20% compared to a static schedule. Additionally, a distributed dynamic SDF scheduler is proposed that splits the scheduling into different parts, which are then connected to a scheduling pipeli ne to incorporate multiple parallel working processors. Each scheduling stage is reworked into a load-balanced cluster to increase the number of parallel scheduling jobs further. This way, the still existing dynamic scheduling bottleneck of a centralized scheduler is widened, allowing handling 7x more processors with the pipelined, clustered dynamic scheduler for a typical signal processing application. The presented dynamic scheduling system assumes the presence of three different communication modes between the processing cores. When emulated on top of the commonly used remote direct memory access (RDMA) protocol, performance issues are encountered. Firstly, RDMA can neatly be used for single-shot point-to-point data transfers, like used in task graph scheduling. Process networks usually make use of high-volume and high-bandwidth data streams. A first in first out (FIFO) communication solution is presented that implements a cyclic buffer on both sender and receiver to serve this need. The buffer handling and data transfer between them are done purely in hardware to remove software overhead from the application. The implementation improves the multi-user access to area-efficient single port on-chip memory modules. It achieves 0.8 of the theoretically possible bandwidth, usually only achieved with area expensive dual-port memories. The third communication mode defines a lightweight message passing (MP) implementation that is truly connectionless. It is needed for efficient inter-process communication of the distributed and clustered scheduling system and the worker processing units’ tight coupling. A hardware flow control assures that an arbitrary number of senders can spontaneously start sending messages to the same receiver. Yet, all messages are guaranteed to be correctly received while eliminating the need for connection establishment and keeping a low message delay. The work focuses on the hardware-software codesign optimization to increase the uncompromised resource efficiency of dynamic SDF graph scheduling.     Energy Aware Runtime Systems for Elastic Stream Processing Platforms

    Following an invariant growth in the required computational performance of processors, the multicore revolution started around 20 years ago. This revolution was mainly an answer to power dissipation constraints restricting the increase of clock frequency in single-core processors. The multicore revolution not only brought in the challenge of parallel programming, i.e. being able to develop software exploiting the entire capabilities of manycore architectures, but also the challenge of programming heterogeneous platforms. The question of “on which processing element to map a specific computational unit?”, is well known in the embedded community. With the introduction of general-purpose graphics processing units (GPGPUs), digital signal processors (DSPs) along with many-core processors on different system-on-chip platforms, heterogeneous parallel platforms are nowadays widespread over several domains, from consumer devices to media processing platforms for telecom operators. Finding mapping together with a suitable hardware architecture is a process called design-space exploration. This process is very challenging in heterogeneous many-core architectures, which promise to offer benefits in terms of energy efficiency. The main problem is the exponential explosion of space exploration. With the recent trend of increasing levels of heterogeneity in the chip, selecting the parameters to take into account when mapping software to hardware is still an open research topic in the embedded area. For example, the current Linux scheduler has poor performance when mapping tasks to computing elements available in hardware. The only metric considered is CPU workload, which as was shown in recent work does not match true performance demands from the applications. Doing so may produce an incorrect allocation of resources, resulting in a waste of energy. The origin of this research work comes from the observation that these approaches do not provide full support for the dynamic behavior of stream processing applications, especially if these behaviors are established only at runtime. This research will contribute to the general goal of developing energy-efficient solutions to design streaming applications on heterogeneous and parallel hardware platforms. Streaming applications are nowadays widely spread in the software domain. Their distinctive characiteristic is the retrieving of multiple streams of data and the need to process them in real time. The proposed work will develop new approaches to address the challenging problem of efficient runtime coordination of dynamic applications, focusing on energy and performance management.Efter en oföränderlig tillväxt i prestandakrav hos processorer, började den flerkärniga processor-revolutionen för ungefär 20 år sedan. Denna revolution skedde till största del som en lösning till begränsningar i energieffekten allt eftersom klockfrekvensen kontinuerligt höjdes i en-kärniga processorer. Den flerkärniga processor-revolutionen medförde inte enbart utmaningen gällande parallellprogrammering, m.a.o. förmågan att utveckla mjukvara som använder sig av alla delelement i de flerkärniga processorerna, men också utmaningen med programmering av heterogena plattformar. Frågeställningen ”på vilken processorelement skall en viss beräkning utföras?” är väl känt inom ramen för inbyggda datorsystem. Efter introduktionen av grafikprocessorer för allmänna beräkningar (GPGPU), signalprocesserings-processorer (DSP) samt flerkärniga processorer på olika system-on-chip plattformar, är heterogena parallella plattformar idag omfattande inom många domäner, från konsumtionsartiklar till mediaprocesseringsplattformar för telekommunikationsoperatörer. Processen att placera beräkningarna på en passande hårdvaruplattform kallas för utforskning av en designrymd (design-space exploration). Denna process är mycket utmanande för heterogena flerkärniga arkitekturer, och kan medföra fördelar när det gäller energieffektivitet. Det största problemet är att de olika valmöjligheterna i designrymden kan växa exponentiellt. Enligt den nuvarande trenden som förespår ökad heterogeniska aspekter i processorerna är utmaningen att hitta den mest passande placeringen av beräkningarna på hårdvaran ännu en forskningsfråga inom ramen för inbyggda datorsystem. Till exempel, den nuvarande schemaläggaren i Linux operativsystemet är inkapabel att hitta en effektiv placering av beräkningarna på den underliggande hårdvaran. Det enda mätsättet som används är processorns belastning vilket, som visats i tidigare forskning, inte motsvarar den verkliga prestandan i applikationen. Användning av detta mätsätt vid resursallokering resulterar i slöseri med energi. Denna forskning härstammar från observationerna att dessa tillvägagångssätt inte stöder det dynamiska beteendet hos ström-processeringsapplikationer (stream processing applications), speciellt om beteendena bara etableras vid körtid. Denna forskning kontribuerar till det allmänna målet att utveckla energieffektiva lösningar för ström-applikationer (streaming applications) på heterogena flerkärniga hårdvaruplattformar. Ström-applikationer är numera mycket vanliga i mjukvarudomän. Deras distinkta karaktär är inläsning av flertalet dataströmmar, och behov av att processera dem i realtid. Arbetet i denna forskning understöder utvecklingen av nya sätt för att lösa det utmanade problemet att effektivt koordinera dynamiska applikationer i realtid och fokus på energi- och prestandahantering
