    Design of smart tool organizer

    The increasing demand for compact and energy efficient machines and mechanisms, led to the emergence of a series of scalable instruments and devices used for testing, storage, manufacturing, and prototyping. The emergence of these devices indeed provided the flexibility and low capital cost that were necessary for product development and personal use. Furthermore, the demand is expected to proliferate to all domestic and industrial sectors of the economy, which brings us to the subject of the current investigation. The main objective of the proposed project is the design and prototyping of a compact electromechanical smart tool organizer that is capable of storing, tracking personal use and availability of machine shop tools in the college of Mathematics and Science at the University of Central Oklahoma. The proposed design incorporates a micro-controlled electro-mechanical dispensing unit, an interactive digital interface with key activation and a database for data collection & tracking of tools and personnel users. The dispensing unit consists of a CNC machine, linear actuator and a 3D printed mechanical clamp which enables the unit to efficiently hold and move various tools to the desired location. The skeleton of the CNC machine is assembled using five stainless steel v-slots operating on a belt and pinion system. Pinons are fitted to NEMA 17 stepper motors to achieve 2D motion by converting rotational motion to linear motion using a belt driven actuator. The assembly of the CNC machine utilizes various gantry plates to hold v-slots in position along with providing mounts for stepper motors and linear actuator. The linear actuator acts as a third axis which allows the motion of the dispensing unit to operate in three directions. This provides mobility to the machine to precisely take the mechanical clamp to a predetermined position within the frame of the dispensing unit. The design of mechanical clamp includes assembly of the base of the clamp, rack and pinion system, two gripper arms and a servo motor. The pinion converts the rotational motion to linear motion of the racks enabling the grip to open and close as required. The final assembly of the mechanical clamp is mounted on the linear actuator using the 3D printed mount bracket on the base of the clamp. The electronics and controls of the smart tool organizer includes low and high voltage operating components such as Nema 17 stepper motors, MG996R servo, linear actuator, limit switches, buck converter, DS3231 RTC module, SD card module, L298N motor drive module, TB6600 motor drivers, a 7” touch screen LED display and an arduino mega. The firmware arduino IDE is used to program these electronic components and ASCII is used to program the Interactive GUI and HMI on the Nextion display which connect to arduino using serial port and synchronizes to achieve the goal of the smart tool organizer

    A Helping Hand for Europe: The Competitive Outlook for the EU Robotics Industry

    This report is one of a series resulting from a project entitled ¿Competitiveness by Leveraging Emerging Technologies Economically¿ (COMPLETE), carried out by JRC-IPTS. Each of the COMPLETE studies illustrates in its own right that European companies are active on many fronts of emerging and disruptive ICT technologies and are supplying the market with relevant products and services. Nevertheless, the studies also show that the creation and growth of high tech companies is still very complex and difficult in Europe, and too many economic opportunities seem to escape European initiatives and ownership. COMPLETE helps to illustrate some of the difficulties experienced in different segments of the ICT industry and by growing potential global players. Hopefully, COMPLETE will contribute to a better understanding of the opportunities and help shape better market conditions (financial, labour and product markets) to sustain European competitiveness and economic growth. This report deals with robotics applications in general, and in two specific areas selected because of potential market and EU capability in these areas: robotics applications in SMEs, and robotics safety. It starts by introducing the state of the art in robotics, their applications, market size, value chains and disruptive potential of emerging robotics technologies. For each of the two specific areas, the report describes the EU landscape, potential market, benefits, difficulties, and how these might be overcome. The last chapter draws together the findings of the study, to consider EU competitiveness in robotics, opportunities and policy implications.     Towards a Framework for Smart Manufacturing adoption in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises

    Smart Manufacturing (SM) paradigm adoption can scale production with demand without compromising on the time for order fulfillment. A smart manufacturing system (SMS) is vertically and horizontally connected, and thus it can minimize the chances of miscommunication. Employees in an SME are aware of the operational requirements and their responsibilities. The machine schedules are prepared based on the tasks a machine must perform. Predictive maintenance reduces the downtime of machines. Design software optimizes the product design. Production feasibility is checked with the help of simulation. The concepts of product life cycle management are considered for waste reduction. Employee safety, and ergonomics, identifying new business opportunities and markets, focus on employee education and skill enhancement are some of the other advantages of SM paradigm adoption. This dissertation develops an SM paradigm adoption framework for manufacturing SMEs by employing the instrumental research approach. The first step in the framework identified the technical aspects of SM, and this step was followed by identifying the research gaps in the suggested methods (in literature) and managerial aspects for adopting SM paradigm. The technical and the managerial aspects were integrated into a toolkit for manufacturing SMEs. This toolkit contains seven modular toolboxes that can be installed in five levels, depending on an SME’s readiness towards SM. The framework proposed in this dissertation focuses on how an SME’s readiness can be assessed and based on its present readiness what tools and practices the SMEs need to have to realize their tailored vision of SM.     Medical robots with potential applications in participatory and opportunistic remote sensing: A review

    Among numerous applications of medical robotics, this paper concentrates on the design, optimal use and maintenance of the related technologies in the context of healthcare, rehabilitation and assistive robotics, and provides a comprehensive review of the latest advancements in the foregoing field of science and technology, while extensively dealing with the possible applications of participatory and opportunistic mobile sensing in the aforementioned domains. The main motivation for the latter choice is the variety of such applications in the settings having partial contributions to functionalities such as artery, radiosurgery, neurosurgery and vascular intervention. From a broad perspective, the aforementioned applications can be realized via various strategies and devices benefiting from detachable drives, intelligent robots, human-centric sensing and computing, miniature and micro-robots. Throughout the paper tens of subjects, including sensor-fusion, kinematic, dynamic and 3D tissue models are discussed based on the existing literature on the state-of-the-art technologies. In addition, from a managerial perspective, topics such as safety monitoring, security, privacy and evolutionary optimization of the operational efficiency are reviewed

    Spacecraft Dormancy Autonomy Analysis for a Crewed Martian Mission

    Current concepts of operations for human exploration of Mars center on the staged deployment of spacecraft, logistics, and crew. Though most studies focus on the needs for human occupation of the spacecraft and habitats, these resources will spend most of their lifetime unoccupied. As such, it is important to identify the operational state of the unoccupied spacecraft or habitat, as well as to design the systems to enable the appropriate level of autonomy. Key goals for this study include providing a realistic assessment of what "dormancy" entails for human spacecraft, exploring gaps in state-of-the-art for autonomy in human spacecraft design, providing recommendations for investments in autonomous systems technology development, and developing architectural requirements for spacecraft that must be autonomous during dormant operations. The mission that was chosen is based on a crewed mission to Mars. In particular, this study focuses on the time that the spacecraft that carried humans to Mars spends dormant in Martian orbit while the crew carries out a surface mission. Communications constraints are assumed to be severe, with limited bandwidth and limited ability to send commands and receive telemetry. The assumptions made as part of this mission have close parallels with mission scenarios envisioned for dormant cis-lunar habitats that are stepping-stones to Mars missions. As such, the data in this report is expected to be broadly applicable to all dormant deep space human spacecraft

    On-Board Electronic Control Systems of Future Automated Heavy Machinery

    The level of automation and wireless communication has increased in heavy machinery recently. This requires utilizing new devices and communication solutions in heavy machinery applications which involve demanding operating conditions and challenging life-cycle management. Therefore, the applied devices have to be robust and hardware architectures flexible, consisting of generic modules. In research and development projects devices that have various communication interfaces and insufficient mechanical and electrical robustness need to be applied. Although this thesis has its main focus on machines utilized as research platforms, many of the challenges are similar with commercial machines.The applicability of typical solutions for data transfer is discussed. Controller area network with a standardized higher level protocol is proposed to be applied where data signalling rates above 1 Mb/s are not required. The main benefits are the availability of robust, generic devices and well-established software tools for configuration management. Ethernet can be utilized to network equipment with high data rates, typically used for perception. Although deterministic industrial Ethernet protocols would fulfil most requirements, the conventional internet protocol suite is likely to be applied due to device availability.Sometimes sensors and other devices without a suitable communication interface need to be applied. In addition, device-related real-time processing or accurate synchronization of hardware signals may be required. A small circuit board with a microcontroller can be utilized as a generic embedded module for building robust, small and cost-efficient prototype devices that have a controller area network interface. Although various microcontroller boards are commercially available, designing one for heavy machinery applications, in particular, has benefits in robustness, size, interfaces, and flexible software development. The design of such a generic embedded module is presented.The device-specific challenges of building an automated machine are discussed. Unexpected switch-off of embedded computers has to be prevented by the control system to avoid file system errors. Moreover, the control system has to protect the batteries against deep discharge when the engine is not running. With many devices, protective enclosures with heating or cooling are required.The electronic control systems of two automated machines utilized as research platforms are presented and discussed as examples. The hardware architectures of the control systems are presented, following the proposed communication solutions as far as is feasible. Several applications of the generic embedded module within the control systems are described. Several research topics have been covered utilizing the automated machines. In this thesis, a cost-efficient operator-assisting functionality of an excavator is presented and discussed in detail.The results of this thesis give not only research institutes but also machine manufacturers and their subcontractors an opportunity to streamline the prototyping of automated heavy machinery

However, its operation poses considerable challenges in terms of safety, environmental impact, and the intricacies of intertwined technical and social structures. Addressing these challenges necessitates the adoption of innovative approaches and advanced technologies. This doctoral research delves into the potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) as an enabler for railway infrastructure monitoring and predictive maintenance, aiming to enhance reliability, efficiency, and safety within the industry. Rooted in a pragmatic modelist philosophical stance, this thesis employs an exploratory sequential mixed-method approach incorporating qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The research process involves engaging with key stakeholders to gain insights into the challenges faced in railway maintenance and the opportunities presented by IoT implementation. Following this, an IoT system is developed, and a comprehensive value-creation framework is proposed for its effective implementation within the railway sector. The findings of this investigation underscore the transformative potential of IoT integration in railway infrastructure monitoring, yielding significant improvements in maintenance processes, safety, and operational efficiency. Furthermore, this doctoral research provides a foundation for future innovation and adaptation in the railway industry, contributing to its ongoing evolution and resilience in an ever-changing technological landscape
