Removal of lead, mercury and nickel using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Objective. In this study the biomass of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used to remove lead, mercury and nickel in the form of ions dissolved in water. Materials and methods. Synthetic solutions were prepared containing the three heavy metals, which were put in contact with viable microorganisms at different conditions of pH, temperature, aeration and agitation. Results. Both individual variables and the interaction effects influenced the biosorption process. Throughout the experimental framework it was observed that the biomass of Saccharomyces cerevisiae removed a higher percentage of lead (86.4%) as compared to mercury and nickel (69.7 and 47.8% respectively). When the pH was set at a value of 5 the effect was positive for all three metals. Conclusions. pH was the variable that had a greater influence on the biosorption of lead on the biomass of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The affinity of the heavy metals for the biomass followed the order Pb>Hg>Ni

La cuantificación del metal se realizó mediante espectrofotometría de ultravioleta visible (UV-vis).Bioremediation is an increasingly adopted technique used in the removal of heavy metals, such as hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) in water, which is a high priority metal, since it is incorporated mainly in water due to the discharge of industrial waste. It is considerably persistent and highly toxic. Therefore, in this work the results of a bioremediation process of Cr (VI) in synthetic water are presented, where Pseudomonas putida against Saccharomyces cerevisiae through biosorption and bioaccumulation are compared separately. The highest removal was obtained with the bioaccumulation process, being 39.03% and 75.17%, respectively. Consequently, this technique was used for the evaluation of both microorganisms together, where 94.06% of the Cr (VI) was removed. The quantification of metal was done by using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis)

Heavy metals can be found in several forms in the environment, and some of
them become harmful once certain concentrations have been met and subsequently
become toxic for all forms of life. These heavy metals are present at high concentration
in water and food in certain regions of the world, representing higher risks for specific
populations groups, even though they are present all over the world and the whole
population is exposed to them. These heavy metals can cause a myriad of different side
effects to human, ranging from chronic diseases to cancer. This work reports research
on commensal bacterial strains isolated from the feces and from the milk of women highly
exposed to mercury but they did not display symptoms of poisoning. Tests have been
conducted on the resistance to methylmercury, inorganic mercury, arsenite and arsenate
to determine their growth capacity in the presence of these toxics. In addition, the
biosorption capacity of the bacterial strains of these metals has been assessed. It has
been proven that these metals have toxic effects on the bacteria, with MeHg being more
toxic than Hg, and As(V) being more toxic than As(III). Furthermore, these strains present
a great binding capacity to Hg(II). Due to this capacity, it is considered that these strains
have potential for further studies involving their probiotic capacity to diminish heavy
metals bioaccesibility/bioavalibility that can improve the health of populations exposed
to these toxic metals.
The present work aims to measure the bioadsorption capacity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae
(commercial yeast) for Pb removal. In the bioadsorption process, parameters such as pH (2.5,
5.1 and 6.6), contact time (5, 30, 120 and 300 minutes) and different Pb concentrations (5, 10,
15 and 20 ppm) were evaluated. The research consisted in determining the growth kinetics of
the yeast to know how much yeast (bioadsorbent) to use in the leaded water. The reading of
the lead concentration was done in the Atomic Adsorption Spectroscopy (AAS) equipment. To
obtain the maximum retention of the metal (Qmax) the isothermal model of Langmuir was used
at a room temperature where a value of 7.89 mg Pb/g of yeast was obtained. The concentration
with the highest percentage of bioadsorption was 5 ppm, in which 96.4% was removed at a pH
of 5.1 and a time of 120 minutes. It was concluded that the yeast has a high capacity of Pb
bioadsorption, however, when it exceeds 15 ppm of lead in the water, the removal rate
decreases
