Streaming multimedia content over the IP-network is poised to be the dominant Internet traffic for the coming decade, predicted to account for more than 91% of all consumer traffic in the coming years. Streaming multimedia content ranges from Internet television (IPTV), video on demand (VoD), peer-to-peer streaming, and 3D television over IP to name a few. Widespread acceptance, growth, and subscriber retention are contingent upon network providers assuring superior Quality of Experience (QoE) on top of todays Internet. This work presents the first empirical understanding of Internet’s video-QoE capabilities, and tools and protocols to efficiently infer and improve them. To infer video-QoE at arbitrary nodes in the Internet, we design and implement MintMOS: a lightweight, real-time, noreference framework for capturing perceptual quality. We demonstrate that MintMOS’s projections closely match with subjective surveys in accessing perceptual quality. We use MintMOS to characterize Internet video-QoE both at the link level and end-to-end path level. As an input to our study, we use extensive measurements from a large number of Internet paths obtained from various measurement overlays deployed using PlanetLab. Link level degradations of intra– and inter–ISP Internet links are studied to create an empirical understanding of their shortcomings and ways to overcome them. Our studies show that intra–ISP links are often poorly engineered compared to peering links, and that iii degradations are induced due to transient network load imbalance within an ISP. Initial results also indicate that overlay networks could be a promising way to avoid such ISPs in times of degradations. A large number of end-to-end Internet paths are probed and we measure delay, jitter, and loss rates. The measurement data is analyzed offline to identify ways to enable a source to select alternate paths in an overlay network to improve video-QoE, without the need for background monitoring or apriori knowledge of path characteristics. We establish that for any unstructured overlay of N nodes, it is sufficient to reroute key frames using a random subset of k nodes in the overlay, where k is bounded by O(lnN). We analyze various properties of such random subsets to derive simple, scalable, and an efficient path selection strategy that results in a k-fold increase in path options for any source-destination pair; options that consistently outperform Internet path selection. Finally, we design a prototype called source initiated frame restoration (SIFR) that employs random subsets to derive alternate paths and demonstrate its effectiveness in improving Internet video-QoE

Multi-source Cooperative Adaptation for QoE-aware Video Multicast Rate-control

Abstract-We consider a wide-area video conferencing application where the video sources adapt their send rates according to the available bandwidth in the network paths. We advocate a QoE-aware cooperative rate control of the sources to relieve the congestion, instead of running multiple (independent) instances of a singlesource adaptation algorithm in a QoE-oblivious manner and additively superposing their results. Our paper focuses on the architecture of such a QoE-aware video multicast system. Dove-tailed to the core functionality of rate adaptation is the session-layer configuration control mechanisms to deliver video to various end-user devices

    Cognitive Video Streaming

Video-on-demand (VoD) streaming services are becoming increasingly popular due to their flexibility to allow users to access their favorite video contents anytime, anywhere from a wide range of access devices such as smart phones, computers and TV. The content providers rely on highly satisfied subscribers for revenue generation and there has been significant efforts in developing approaches to “estimate” the quality of experience (QoE) of VoD subscribers. But a key issue is that QoE is not defined, appropriate proxies needs to be found for QoE, via the streaming metrics (the quality of service (QoS) metrics) that are largely based on initial startup time, buffering delays, average bit rate and average throughput and other relevant factors such as the video content and user behavior and other external factors. The ultimate objective of the content provider is to elevate the QoE of all the subscribers at the cost of minimal network resources, such as hardware resources and bandwidth. We propose a cognitive video streaming strategy in order to ensure the QoE of subscribers while utilizing minimal network resources. The proposed cognitive video streaming architecture consists of an estimation module, a prediction module and an adaptation module. Then, we demonstrate the prediction module of the cognitive video streaming architecture through a play time prediction tool. For this purpose, the applicability of different machine learning algorithms such as k-nearest neighbor, neural network regression and survival models are experimented with; then, we develop an approach to identify the most relevant factors that contributed to the prediction. The proposed approaches are tested on data set provided by Comcast Cable

We present a survey of psychophysiology-based assessment for quality of experience (QoE) in advanced multimedia technologies. We provide a classification of methods relevant to QoE and describe related psychological processes, experimental design considerations, and signal analysis techniques. We summarize multimodal techniques and discuss several important aspects of psychophysiology-based QoE assessment, including the synergies with psychophysical assessment and the need for standardized experimental design. This survey is not considered to be exhaustive but serves as a guideline for those interested to further explore this emerging field of research

The thesis focuses on Quality of Experience (QoE) of HTTP adaptive video streaming (HAS) and traffic management in access networks to improve the QoE of HAS. First, the QoE impact of adaptation parameters and time on layer was investigated with subjective crowdsourcing studies. The results were used to compute a QoE-optimal adaptation strategy for given video and network conditions. This allows video service providers to develop and benchmark improved adaptation logics for HAS. Furthermore, the thesis investigated concepts to monitor video QoE on application and network layer, which can be used by network providers in the QoE-aware traffic management cycle. Moreover, an analytic and simulative performance evaluation of QoE-aware traffic management on a bottleneck link was conducted. Finally, the thesis investigated socially-aware traffic management for HAS via Wi-Fi offloading of mobile HAS flows. A model for the distribution of public Wi-Fi hotspots and a platform for socially-aware traffic management on private home routers was presented.

How to Perform AMP? Cubic Adjustments for Improving the QoE

[EN] Adaptive Media Playout (AMP) consists of smoothly and dynamically adjusting the media playout rate to recover from undesired (e.g., buffer overflow/underflow or out-of-sync) situations. The existing AMP solutions are mainly characterized by two main aspects. The first one is their goal (e.g., keeping the buffers¿ occupancy into safe ranges or enabling media synchronization). The second one is the criteria that determine the need for triggering the playout adjustments (e.g., buffer fullness or asynchrony levels). This paper instead focuses on a third key aspect, which has not been sufficiently investigated yet: the specific adjustment strategy to be performed. In particular, we propose a novel AMP strategy, called Cubic AMP, which is based on employing a cubic interpolation method to adjust a deviated playout point to a given reference. On the one hand, mathematical analysis and graphical examples show that our proposal provides superior performance than other existing linear and quadratic AMP strategies in terms of the smoothness of the playout curve, while significantly outperforming the quadratic AMP strategy regarding the duration of the adjustment period and without increasing the computational complexity. It has also been proved and discussed that higher-order polynomial interpolation methods are less convenient than cubic ones. On the other hand, the results of subjective tests confirm that our proposal provides better Quality of Experience (QoE) than the other existing AMP strategies. This work has been funded, partially, by the “Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER)” and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, under its R&D&I Support Program, in project with Ref. Entertainment and multimedia are the key functionalities in emerging mobile markets. The ability to understand and quantify the quality of experience (QoE, i.e., the users' subjective perception of the "overall acceptability of an application or service"), will play a major role in the success of these mobile services. This study explores the thresholds at which the technical quality of a mobile video service becomes unacceptable for users. A subjective experiment drawing on the logging of technical parameters combined with subjective evaluations by a user panel resulted in a model for quantifying the acceptability of video interruptions. The results of this analysis provide insights into the QoE and (un)acceptability regarding video interruptions for different network conditions and video parameters. The conclusions of this paper can be used as a guideline for service design and network dimensioning

Traditionally, previous generations of mobile cellular networks have been designed with Quality of Service (QoS) criteria in mind, so that they manage to meet specific service requirements. Quality of Experience (QoE) has, however, recently emerged as a concept, disrupting the design of future network generations by giving clear emphasis on the actually achieved user experience. The emergence of the QoE concept has been a result of the inevitable strong transition that the Telecom industry is currently experiencing from system-centric networks to more user-centric solutions and objectives. Mobile network operators, service providers, application developers, as well as other stakeholders involved in the service provisioning chain have been attracted by the opportunities that the integration of the QoE concept could bring to their business; indeed, the provisioned QoE constitutes a determining factor of differentiation among different stakeholders, a tendency which is expected to become even more intense in the years to come. Motivated by this boost towards user-centricity, the objective of the research conducted in this thesis is to explore the challenges and opportunities that arise in modern mobile cellular networks when QoE is considered. Such opportunities concern, first of all, the possibility to comprehend the QoE that a provider achieves when provisioning a service. This can be enabled by the implementation and integration of QoE assessment methods into the real-time operation of a network. Then, the next step is the exploitation of collected QoE-related intelligence in order to re-examine existing network-layer mechanisms (e.g., radio scheduling), or application-layer mechanisms (e.g., video streaming), as well as propose novel cross-layer approaches towards ameliorating the achieved QoE. Moreover, the opportunity emerges to propose novel algorithms that stem from the inherent idiosyncrasies of QoE, such as the non-linear impact of QoS-related parameters on QoE, as a way to further enhance the users’ QoE. In this direction, throughout this thesis, QoE estimation models and metrics are explored and exploited in order to quantify QoE and thus, to improve existing mechanisms of mobile cellular networks. The core of this thesis is the proposal of a QoE provisioning cycle that allows the control, monitoring (i.e., modeling) and management of QoE in a cellular network. Each one of these functions is further analyzed, while emphasis is given on the modeling and management operations. In terms of modeling, QoE assessment methods and QoE-related performance indicators are described and classified. Parametric quality estimation is identified as the most appealing type of QoE estimation in mobile cellular networks, thus, it is thoroughly described for widely used types of services, such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and video streaming. In terms of QoE management, novel QoE-aware mechanisms that demonstrate QoE improvements for the users are proposed, namely: a) a QoE-driven Device-to-Device (D2D) communication management scheme that enhances end-user QoE, b) a “consistent” radio scheduling algorithm that improves the end-user QoE by mitigating throughput fluctuations, and c) a context-aware HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) mechanism that successfully mitigates stallings (i.e., video freezing events) in the context of bandwidth-challenging scenarios. Moreover, a programmable QoE-SDN APP into the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) architecture is introduced, which enables network feedback exposure from mobile network operators to video service providers, revealing QoE benefits for the customers of video providers and bandwidth savings for the network operators. Overall, this thesis promotes the uniting of the domain of QoE with the domain of mobile communications, as well as the collaboration of mutual-interest between mobile network operators (network layer) and service providers (application layer), presenting the high potential from such approaches for all involved stakeholders

Stability of Video Rate Control Algorithms Over Bandwidth-limited Network Paths

Abstract-The paper considers the stability of AIMD-based rate adaptation algorithm for video transmission over a bandwidth-limited network path. We examine the stability aspects from two angles: first, a quick relief from congestion by a faster reduction of send rate, and second, a larger limit-cycle time with a slow rate reduction in the steady-state (and hence lower rate jitter). The stability assessment also considers the loss of feedback signals from the video receiver that indicate the packet loss on data channels. We provide a managementoriented assessment of the convergence properties of video rate control system. This in turn allows an autonomic adjustment of the AIMD parameters and the system controller models for optimal performance
