    Towards the development of a smart flying sensor: illustration in the field of precision agriculture

    Sensing is an important element to quantify productivity, product quality and to make decisions. Applications, such as mapping, surveillance, exploration and precision agriculture, require a reliable platform for remote sensing. This paper presents the first steps towards the development of a smart flying sensor based on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The concept of smart remote sensing is illustrated and its performance tested for the task of mapping the volume of grain inside a trailer during forage harvesting. Novelty lies in: (1) the development of a position-estimation method with time delay compensation based on inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors and image processing; (2) a method to build a 3D map using information obtained from a regular camera; and (3) the design and implementation of a path-following control algorithm using model predictive control (MPC). Experimental results on a lab-scale system validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology

    External localization system for mobile robotics

    We present a fast and precise vision-based software intended for multiple robot localization. The core component of the proposed localization system is an efficient method for black and white circular pattern detection. The method is robust to variable lighting conditions, achieves sub-pixel precision, and its computational complexity is independent of the processed image size. With off-the-shelf computational equipment and low-cost camera, its core algorithm is able to process hundreds of images per second while tracking hundreds of objects with millimeter precision. We propose a mathematical model of the method that allows to calculate its precision, area of coverage, and processing speed from the camera’s intrinsic parameters and hardware’s processing capacity. The correctness of the presented model and performance of the algorithm in real-world conditions are verified in several experiments. Apart from the method description, we also publish its source code; so, it can be used as an enabling technology for various mobile robotics problems

    Vision Based Target Tracking Using An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

    International audience— We present in this paper a backstepping controller for vision based target tracking with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. A down facing camera is used with a pose estimation algorithm to extract the position of the target (an Unmanned Ground Vehicle). The output is then fed into the developed controller to generate the necessary movements (pitch and roll) of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle in order to keep the target in the coverage view of the camera (following it constantly). The developed scheme is used to help the Unmanned Ground Vehicle to navigate among obstacles, and the overall system is designed in order to help human operator to supervise the Aerial and Ground vehicles for area inspection or object transportation in industrial areas (when using multiple Unmanned Ground Vehicles)

    Use of Unmanned Aerial Systems in Civil Applications

    Interest in drones has been exponentially growing in the last ten years and these machines are often presented as the optimal solution in a huge number of civil applications (monitoring, agriculture, emergency management etc). However the promises still do not match the data coming from the consumer market, suggesting that the only big field in which the use of small unmanned aerial vehicles is actually profitable is the video-makers’ one. This may be explained partly with the strong limits imposed by existing (and often "obsolete") national regulations, but also - and pheraps mainly - with the lack of real autonomy. The vast majority of vehicles on the market nowadays are infact autonomous only in the sense that they are able to follow a pre-determined list of latitude-longitude-altitude coordinates. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that complete autonomy for UAVs can be achieved only with a performing control, reliable and flexible planning platforms and strong perception capabilities; these topics are introduced and discussed by presenting the results of the main research activities performed by the candidate in the last three years which have resulted in 1) the design, integration and control of a test bed for validating and benchmarking visual-based algorithm for space applications; 2) the implementation of a cloud-based platform for multi-agent mission planning; 3) the on-board use of a multi-sensor fusion framework based on an Extended Kalman Filter architecture

School of Computational and Applied Mathematics, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, November 2017The increased capabilities and lower cost of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) unveil big opportunities for a rapidly growing number of civilian and commercial applications. Some missions require direct control using a receiver in a point-to-point connection, involving one or very few MAVs. An alternative class of mission is remotely controlled, with the control of the drone automated to a certain extent using mission planning software and autopilot systems. For most emerging missions, there is a need for more autonomous, cooperative control of MAVs, as well as more complex data processing from sensors like cameras and laser scanners. In the last decade, this has given rise to an extensive research from both academia and industry. This research direction applies robotics and computer vision concepts to Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). However, UASs are often designed for speciïŹc hardware and software, thus providing limited integration, interoperability and re-usability across diïŹ€erent missions. In addition, there are numerous open issues related to UAS command, control and communication(C3), and multi-MAVs. We argue and elaborate throughout this dissertation that some of the recent standardbased publish/subscribe communication protocols can solve many of these challenges and meet the non-functional requirements of MAV robotics applications. This dissertation assesses the MQTT, DDS and TCPROS protocols in a distributed architecture of a UAS control system and Ground Control Station software. While TCPROS has been the leading robotics communication transport for ROS applications, MQTT and DDS are lightweight enough to be used for data exchange between distributed systems of aerial robots. Furthermore, MQTT and DDS are based on industry standards to foster communication interoperability of “things”. Both protocols have been extensively presented to address many of today’s needs related to networks based on the internet of things (IoT). For example, MQTT has been used to exchange data with space probes, whereas DDS was employed for aerospace defence and applications of smart cities. We designed and implemented a distributed UAS architecture based on each publish/subscribe protocol TCPROS, MQTT and DDS. The proposed communication systems were tested with a vision-based Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) system involving three Parrot AR Drone2 MAVs. Within the context of this study, MQTT and DDS messaging frameworks serve the purpose of abstracting UAS complexity and heterogeneity. Additionally, these protocols are expected to provide low-latency communication and scale up to meet the requirements of real-time remote sensing applications. The most important contribution of this work is the implementation of a complete distributed communication architecture for multi-MAVs. Furthermore, we assess the viability of this architecture and benchmark the performance of the protocols in relation to an autonomous quadcopter navigation testbed composed of a SLAM algorithm, an extended Kalman ïŹlter and a PID controller.XL201
