    The color of smiling: computational synaesthesia of facial expressions

    This note gives a preliminary account of the transcoding or rechanneling problem between different stimuli as it is of interest for the natural interaction or affective computing fields. By the consideration of a simple example, namely the color response of an affective lamp to a sensed facial expression, we frame the problem within an information- theoretic perspective.     Human robot interaction in a crowded environment

    Human Robot Interaction (HRI) is the primary means of establishing natural and affective communication between humans and robots. HRI enables robots to act in a way similar to humans in order to assist in activities that are considered to be laborious, unsafe, or repetitive. Vision based human robot interaction is a major component of HRI, with which visual information is used to interpret how human interaction takes place. Common tasks of HRI include finding pre-trained static or dynamic gestures in an image, which involves localising different key parts of the human body such as the face and hands. This information is subsequently used to extract different gestures. After the initial detection process, the robot is required to comprehend the underlying meaning of these gestures [3]. Thus far, most gesture recognition systems can only detect gestures and identify a person in relatively static environments. This is not realistic for practical applications as difficulties may arise from people‟s movements and changing illumination conditions. Another issue to consider is that of identifying the commanding person in a crowded scene, which is important for interpreting the navigation commands. To this end, it is necessary to associate the gesture to the correct person and automatic reasoning is required to extract the most probable location of the person who has initiated the gesture. In this thesis, we have proposed a practical framework for addressing the above issues. It attempts to achieve a coarse level understanding about a given environment before engaging in active communication. This includes recognizing human robot interaction, where a person has the intention to communicate with the robot. In this regard, it is necessary to differentiate if people present are engaged with each other or their surrounding environment. The basic task is to detect and reason about the environmental context and different interactions so as to respond accordingly. For example, if individuals are engaged in conversation, the robot should realize it is best not to disturb or, if an individual is receptive to the robot‟s interaction, it may approach the person. Finally, if the user is moving in the environment, it can analyse further to understand if any help can be offered in assisting this user. The method proposed in this thesis combines multiple visual cues in a Bayesian framework to identify people in a scene and determine potential intentions. For improving system performance, contextual feedback is used, which allows the Bayesian network to evolve and adjust itself according to the surrounding environment. The results achieved demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique in dealing with human-robot interaction in a relatively crowded environment [7]

    Robust multimodal dense SLAM

    To enable increasingly intelligent behaviours, autonomous robots will need to be equipped with a deep understanding of their surrounding environment. It would be particularly desirable if this level of perception could be achieved automatically through the use of vision-based sensing, as passive cameras make a compelling sensor choice for robotic platforms due to their low cost, low weight, and low power consumption. Fundamental to extracting a high-level understanding from a set of 2D images is an understanding of the underlying 3D geometry of the environment. In mobile robotics, the most popular and successful technique for building a representation of 3D geometry from 2D images is Visual Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM). While sparse, landmark-based SLAM systems have demonstrated high levels of accuracy and robustness, they are only capable of producing sparse maps. In general, to move beyond simple navigation to scene understanding and interaction, dense 3D reconstructions are required. Dense SLAM systems naturally allow for online dense scene reconstruction, but suffer from a lack of robustness due to the fact that the dense image alignment used in the tracking step has a narrow convergence basin and that the photometric-based depth estimation used in the mapping step is typically poorly constrained due to the presence of occlusions and homogeneous textures. This thesis develops methods that can be used to increase the robustness of dense SLAM by fusing additional sensing modalities into standard dense SLAM pipelines. In particular, this thesis will look at two sensing modalities: acceleration and rotation rate measurements from an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to address the tracking issue, and learned priors on dense reconstructions from deep neural networks (DNNs) to address the mapping issue.Open Acces

    Object-level dynamic SLAM

    Visual Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) can estimate a camera's pose in an unknown environment and reconstruct an online map of it. Despite the advances in many real-time dense SLAM systems, most still assume a static environment, which is not a valid assumption in many real-world scenarios. This thesis aims to enable dense visual SLAM to run robustly in a dynamic environment, knowing where the sensor is in the environment, and, also importantly, what and where objects are in the surrounding environment for better scene understanding. The contributions in this thesis are threefold. The first one presents one of the first object-level dynamic SLAM systems that robustly track camera pose while detecting, tracking, and reconstructing all the objects in dynamic scenes. It can continuously fuse geometric, semantic, and motion information for each object into an octree-based volumetric representation. One of the challenges in tracking moving objects is that the object motion can easily break the illumination constancy assumption. In our second contribution, we address this issue by proposing a dense feature-metric alignment to robustly estimate camera and object poses. We will show how to learn dense feature maps and feature-metric uncertainties in a self-supervised way. They formulate a probabilistic feature-metric residual, which can be efficiently solved using Gauss-Newton optimisation and easily coupled with other residuals. So far, we can only reconstruct objects' geometry from the sensor data. Our third contribution further incorporates category-level shape prior to the object mapping. Conditioning on the depth measurement, the learned implicit function completes the unseen part while reconstructing the observed part accurately. It can yield better reconstruction completeness and more accurate object pose estimation. These three contributions in this thesis have advanced the state of the art in visual SLAM. We hope such object-level dynamic SLAM systems will help robots intelligently interact with the human-existing world.Open Acces

    Long-term experiments with an adaptive spherical view representation for navigation in changing environments

    Real-world environments such as houses and offices change over time, meaning that a mobile robot’s map will become out of date. In this work, we introduce a method to update the reference views in a hybrid metric-topological map so that a mobile robot can continue to localize itself in a changing environment. The updating mechanism, based on the multi-store model of human memory, incorporates a spherical metric representation of the observed visual features for each node in the map, which enables the robot to estimate its heading and navigate using multi-view geometry, as well as representing the local 3D geometry of the environment. A series of experiments demonstrate the persistence performance of the proposed system in real changing environments, including analysis of the long-term stability

    Tracking interacting targets in multi-modal sensors

    PhDObject tracking is one of the fundamental tasks in various applications such as surveillance, sports, video conferencing and activity recognition. Factors such as occlusions, illumination changes and limited field of observance of the sensor make tracking a challenging task. To overcome these challenges the focus of this thesis is on using multiple modalities such as audio and video for multi-target, multi-modal tracking. Particularly, this thesis presents contributions to four related research topics, namely, pre-processing of input signals to reduce noise, multi-modal tracking, simultaneous detection and tracking, and interaction recognition. To improve the performance of detection algorithms, especially in the presence of noise, this thesis investigate filtering of the input data through spatio-temporal feature analysis as well as through frequency band analysis. The pre-processed data from multiple modalities is then fused within Particle filtering (PF). To further minimise the discrepancy between the real and the estimated positions, we propose a strategy that associates the hypotheses and the measurements with a real target, using a Weighted Probabilistic Data Association (WPDA). Since the filtering involved in the detection process reduces the available information and is inapplicable on low signal-to-noise ratio data, we investigate simultaneous detection and tracking approaches and propose a multi-target track-beforedetect Particle filtering (MT-TBD-PF). The proposed MT-TBD-PF algorithm bypasses the detection step and performs tracking in the raw signal. Finally, we apply the proposed multi-modal tracking to recognise interactions between targets in regions within, as well as outside the cameras’ fields of view. The efficiency of the proposed approaches are demonstrated on large uni-modal, multi-modal and multi-sensor scenarios from real world detections, tracking and event recognition datasets and through participation in evaluation campaigns

    Learning to complete object shapes for object-level mapping in dynamic scenes

    In this paper, we propose a novel object-level mapping system that can simultaneously segment, track, and reconstruct objects in dynamic scenes. It can further predict and complete their full geometries by conditioning on reconstructions from depth inputs and a category-level shape prior with the aim that completed object geometry leads to better object reconstruction and tracking accuracy. For each incoming RGB-D frame, we perform instance segmentation to detect objects and build data associations between the detection and the existing object maps. A new object map will be created for each unmatched detection. For each matched object, we jointly optimise its pose and latent geometry representations using geometric residual and differential rendering residual towards its shape prior and completed geometry. Our approach shows better tracking and reconstruction performance compared to methods using traditional volumetric mapping or learned shape prior approaches. We evaluate its effectiveness by quantitatively and qualitatively testing it in both synthetic and real-world sequences
