Signal processing techniques for mobile multimedia systems
Recent trends in wireless communication systems show a significant demand for the delivery of multimedia services and applications over mobile networks - mobile multimedia - like video telephony, multimedia messaging, mobile gaming, interactive and streaming video, etc. However, despite the ongoing development of key communication technologies that support these applications, the communication resources and bandwidth available to wireless/mobile radio systems are often severely limited. It is well known, that these bottlenecks are inherently due to the processing capabilities of mobile transmission systems, and the time-varying nature of wireless channel conditions and propagation environments. Therefore, new ways of processing and transmitting multimedia data over mobile radio channels have become essential which is the principal focus of this thesis. In this work, the performance and suitability of various signal processing techniques and transmission strategies in the application of multimedia data over wireless/mobile radio links are investigated. The proposed transmission systems for multimedia communication employ different data encoding schemes which include source coding in the wavelet domain, transmit diversity coding (space-time coding), and adaptive antenna beamforming (eigenbeamforming). By integrating these techniques into a robust communication system, the quality (SNR, etc) of multimedia signals received on mobile devices is maximised while mitigating the fast fading and multi-path effects of mobile channels. To support the transmission of high data-rate multimedia applications, a well known multi-carrier transmission technology known as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been implemented. As shown in this study, this results in significant performance gains when combined with other signal-processing techniques such as spa ce-time block coding (STBC). To optimise signal transmission, a novel unequal adaptive modulation scheme for the communication of multimedia data over MIMO-OFDM systems has been proposed. In this system, discrete wavelet transform/subband coding is used to compress data into their respective low-frequency and high-frequency components. Unlike traditional methods, however, data representing the low-frequency data are processed and modulated separately as they are more sensitive to the distortion effects of mobile radio channels. To make use of a desirable subchannel state, such that the quality (SNR) of the multimedia data recovered at the receiver is optimized, we employ a lookup matrix-adaptive bit and power allocation (LM-ABPA) algorithm. Apart from improving the spectral efficiency of OFDM, the modified LM-ABPA scheme, sorts and allocates subcarriers with the highest SNR to low-frequency data and the remaining to the least important data. To maintain a target system SNR, the LM-ABPA loading scheme assigns appropriate signal constella tion sizes and transmit power levels (modulation type) across all subcarriers and is adapted to the varying channel conditions such that the average system error-rate (SER/BER) is minimised. When configured for a constant data-rate load, simulation results show significant performance gains over non-adaptive systems. In addition to the above studies, the simulation framework developed in this work is applied to investigate the performance of other signal processing techniques for multimedia communication such as blind channel equalization, and to examine the effectiveness of a secure communication system based on a logistic chaotic generator (LCG) for chaos shift-keying (CSK)
Characterisation and Modelling of Indoor and Short-Range MIMO Communications
Over the last decade, we have witnessed the rapid evolution of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output
(MIMO) systems which promise to break the frontiers of conventional architectures and deliver
high throughput by employing more than one element at the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx)
in order to exploit the spatial domain. This is achieved by transmitting simultaneous data
streams from different elements which impinge on the Rx with ideally unique spatial signatures
as a result of the propagation paths’ interactions with the surrounding environment. This thesis
is oriented to the statistical characterisation and modelling of MIMO systems and particularly
of indoor and short-range channels which lend themselves a plethora of modern applications,
such as wireless local networks (WLANs), peer-to-peer and vehicular communications.
The contributions of the thesis are detailed below. Firstly, an indoor channel model is proposed
which decorrelates the full spatial correlation matrix of a 5.2 GHzmeasuredMIMO channel and
thereafter assigns the Nakagami-m distribution on the resulting uncorrelated eigenmodes. The
choice of the flexible Nakagami-m density was found to better fit the measured data compared
to the commonly used Rayleigh and Ricean distributions. In fact, the proposed scheme captures
the spatial variations of the measured channel reasonably well and systematically outperforms
two known analytical models in terms of information theory and link-level performance.
The second contribution introduces an array processing scheme, namely the three-dimensional
(3D) frequency domain Space Alternating Generalised Expectation Maximisation (FD-SAGE)
algorithm for jointly extracting the dominant paths’ parameters. The scheme exhibits a satisfactory
robustness in a synthetic environment even for closely separated sources and is applicable
to any array geometry as long as its manifold is known. The algorithm is further applied to the
same set of raw data so that different global spatial parameters of interest are determined; these
are the multipath clustering, azimuth spreads and inter-dependency of the spatial domains.
The third contribution covers the case of short-range communications which have nowadays
emerged as a hot topic in the area of wireless networks. The main focus is on dual-branch
MIMO Ricean systems for which a design methodology to achieve maximum capacities in the
presence of Line-of-Sight (LoS) components is proposed. Moreover, a statistical eigenanalysis
of these configurations is performed and novel closed-formulae for the marginal eigenvalue
and condition number statistics are derived. These formulae are further used to develop an
adaptive detector (AD) whose aim is to reduce the feasibility cost and complexity of Maximum
Likelihood (ML)-based MIMO receivers.
Finally, a tractable novel upper bound on the ergodic capacity of the above mentioned MIMO
systems is presented which relies on a fundamental power constraint. The bound is sufficiently
tight and applicable for arbitrary rank of the mean channel matrix, Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR)
and takes the effects of spatial correlation at both ends into account. More importantly, it
includes previously reported capacity bounds as special cases
Array processing techniques for direction of arrival estimation, communications, and localization in vehicular and wireless sensor networks
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES).Array signal processing in wireless communication has been a topic of interest in research for over three decades. In the fourth generation (4G) of the wireless communication systems, also known as Long Term Evolution (LTE), multi antenna systems have been adopted according to the Release 9 of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). For the fifth generation (5G) of the wireless communication systems, hundreds of antennas should be incorporated to the devices in a massive multi-user Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) architecture. The presence of multiple antennas provides array gain, diversity gain, spatial gain, and interference reduction. Furthermore, arrays enable spatial filtering and parameter estimation, which can be used to help solve problems that could not previously be addressed from a signal processing perspective. The aim of this thesis is to bridge some gaps between signal processing theory and real world applications. Array processing techniques traditionally assume an ideal array. Therefore, in order to exploit such techniques, a robust set of methods for array interpolation are fundamental and are developed in this work. Problems in the field of wireless sensor networks and vehicular networks are also addressed from an array signal processing perspective. In this dissertation, novel methods for array interpolation are presented and their performance in real world scenarios is evaluated. Signal processing concepts are implemented in the context of a wireless sensor network. These concepts provide a level of synchronization sufficient for distributed multi antenna communication to be applied, resulting in improved lifetime and improved overall network behaviour. Array signal processing methods are proposed to solve the problem of radio based localization in vehicular network scenarios with applications in road safety and pedestrian protection
Opportunistic communications in large uncoordinated networks
(English) The increase of wireless devices offering high data rate services limits the coexistence of wireless systems sharing the same resources in a given geographical area because of inter-system interference. Therefore, interference management plays a key role in permitting the coexistence of several heterogeneous communication services. However, classical interference management strategies require lateral information giving rise to the need for inter-system coordination and cooperation, which is not always practical.
Opportunistic communications offer a potential solution to the problem of inter-system interference management. The basic principle of opportunistic communications is to efficiently and robustly exploit the resources available in a wireless network and adapt the transmitted signals to the state of the network to avoid inter-system interference. Therefore, opportunistic communications depend on inferring the available network resources that can be safely exploited without inducing interference in coexisting communication nodes. Once the available network resources are identified, the most prominent opportunistic communication techniques consist in designing scenario-adapted precoding/decoding strategies to exploit the so-called null space. Despite this, classical solutions in the literature suffer from two main drawbacks: the lack of robustness to detection errors and the need for intra-system cooperation.
This thesis focuses on the design of a null space-based opportunistic communication scheme that addresses the drawbacks exhibited by existing methodologies under the assumption that opportunistic nodes do not cooperate. For this purpose, a generalized detection error model independent of the null-space identification mechanism is introduced that allows the design of solutions that exhibit minimal inter-system interference in the worst case. These solutions respond to a maximum signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) criterion, which is optimal under non-cooperative conditions. The proposed methodology allows the design of a family of orthonormal waveforms that perform a spreading of the modulated symbols within the detected null space, which is key to minimizing the induced interference density. The proposed solutions are invariant within the inferred null space, allowing the removal of the feedback link without giving up coherent waveform detection.
In the absence of coordination, the waveform design relies solely on locally sensed network state information, inducing a mismatch between the null spaces identified by the transmitter and receiver that may worsen system performance. Although the proposed solution is robust to this mismatch, the design of enhanced receivers using active subspace detection schemes is also studied.
When the total number of network resources increases arbitrarily, the proposed solutions tend to be linear combinations of complex exponentials, providing an interpretation in the frequency domain. This asymptotic behavior allows us to adapt the proposed solution to frequency-selective channels by means of a cyclic prefix and to study an efficient modulation similar to the time division multiplexing scheme but using circulant waveforms.
Finally, the impact of the use of multiple antennas in opportunistic null space-based communications is studied. The performed analysis reveals that, in any case, the structure of the antenna clusters affects the opportunistic communication, since the proposed waveform mimics the behavior of a single-antenna transmitter. On the other hand, the number of sensors employed translates into an improvement in terms of SIR.(Català) El creixement incremental dels dispositius sense fils que requereixen serveis d'alta velocitat de dades limita la coexistència de sistemes sense fils que comparteixen els mateixos recursos en una àrea geogràfica donada a causa de la interferència entre sistemes. Strategies for Devising Automatic Signal Recognition Algorithms in a Shared Radio Environment
In an increasingly congested and complex radio environment interference is to be expected, which poses problems for Automatic Signal Recognition (ASR) systems.
This thesis explores strategies for improving ASR performance in the presence of interference. The thesis breaks the overall research question down into a number of subquestions and explores each of these in turn. A Phase-symmetric Cross Recurrence Plot is developed and used to show how a radio signal can be manipulated to separate information about the modulation from the information being carried. The Logarithmic Cyclic frequency Domain Profile is introduced to illustrate how a logarithmic representation can be used for analysing mixtures of signals with very different cyclic frequencies. After defining a canonical ASR system architecture, the concepts of an Ideal Feature and Interference Selectivity are introduced and applied to typical features used in ASR processing. Finally it is shown how these algorithmic developments can be combined in a Bayesian chain implementation that can accommodate a wide variety of feature extraction algorithms.
It is concluded that future ASR systems will require features that can handle a wide range of signal types with much higher levels of interference selectivity if they are to achieve acceptable performance in shared spectrum bands. Intelligent segmentation is shown to be a requirement for future ASR systems unless features can be developed that have near ideal performance
Advanced Algebraic Concepts for Efficient Multi-Channel Signal Processing
(CP) Zerlegung mehrdimensionaler Signale vorgestellt.
Finden der Summenraten-optimalen Strategie (RAGES) her.
Modern society is undergoing a fundamental change in the way we interact with technology.
More and more devices are becoming "smart" by gaining advanced computation capabilities
and communication interfaces, from household appliances over transportation systems to large-scale
networks like the power grid. Recording, processing, and exchanging digital information
is thus becoming increasingly important. As a growing share of devices is nowadays mobile
and hence battery-powered, a particular interest in efficient digital signal processing techniques
emerges.
This thesis contributes to this goal by demonstrating methods for finding efficient algebraic
solutions to various applications of multi-channel digital signal processing. These may not
always result in the best possible system performance. However, they often come close while
being significantly simpler to describe and to implement. The simpler description facilitates a
thorough analysis of their performance which is crucial to design robust and reliable systems.
The fact that they rely on standard algebraic methods only allows their rapid implementation
and test under real-world conditions.
We demonstrate this concept in three different application areas. First, we present a semi-algebraic
framework to compute the Canonical Polyadic (CP) decompositions of multidimensional
signals, a very fundamental tool in multilinear algebra with applications ranging from
chemistry over communications to image compression. Compared to state-of-the art iterative
solutions, our framework offers a flexible control of the complexity-accuracy trade-off and
is less sensitive to badly conditioned data. The second application area is multidimensional
subspace-based high-resolution parameter estimation with applications in RADAR, wave propagation
modeling, or biomedical imaging. We demonstrate that multidimensional signals can
be represented by tensors, providing a convenient description and allowing to exploit the
multidimensional structure in a better way than using matrices only. Based on this idea,
we introduce the tensor-based subspace estimate which can be applied to enhance existing
matrix-based parameter estimation schemes significantly. We demonstrate the enhancements
by choosing the family of ESPRIT-type algorithms as an example and introducing enhanced
versions that exploit the multidimensional structure (Tensor-ESPRIT), non-circular source
amplitudes (NC ESPRIT), and both jointly (NC Tensor-ESPRIT). To objectively judge the
resulting estimation accuracy, we derive a framework for the analytical performance assessment
of arbitrary ESPRIT-type algorithms by virtue of an asymptotical first order perturbation
expansion. Our results are more general than existing analytical results since we do not need
any assumptions about the distribution of the desired signal and the noise and we do not
require the number of samples to be large. At the end, we obtain simplified expressions for the
mean square estimation error that provide insights into efficiency of the methods under various
conditions. The third application area is bidirectional relay-assisted communications. Due to
its particularly low complexity and its efficient use of the radio resources we choose two-way
relaying with a MIMO amplify and forward relay. We demonstrate that the required channel
knowledge can be obtained by a simple algebraic tensor-based channel estimation scheme. We
also discuss the design of the relay amplification matrix in such a setting. Existing approaches
are either based on complicated numerical optimization procedures or on ad-hoc solutions
that to not perform well in terms of the bit error rate or the sum-rate. Therefore, we propose
algebraic solutions that are inspired by these performance metrics and therefore perform well
while being easy to compute. For the MIMO case, we introduce the algebraic norm maximizing
(ANOMAX) scheme, which achieves a very low bit error rate, and its extension Rank-Restored
ANOMAX (RR-ANOMAX) that achieves a sum-rate close to an upper bound. Moreover, for
the special case of single antenna terminals we derive the semi-algebraic RAGES scheme which
finds the sum-rate optimal relay amplification matrix based on generalized eigenvectors. Numerical
simulations evaluate the resulting system performance in terms of bit error rate and
system sum rate which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algebraic solutions
Recent Advances in Signal Processing
The signal processing task is a very critical issue in the majority of new technological inventions and challenges in a variety of applications in both science and engineering fields. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively. The book has the advantage of providing a collection of applications that are completely independent and self-contained; thus, the interested reader can choose any chapter and skip to another without losing continuity
Pre-DFT processing using eigenanalysis for coded OFDM with multiple receive antennas
In broadband wireless communications, coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) can be used with multiple receive antennas to achieve both frequency diversity and space diversity. In this scenario, the optimal approach is subcarrier-based space combining. However, such an approach is quite complex, because multiple discrete Fourier transform (DFT) blocks, each per receive antenna, are used. In this paper, we propose a pre-DFT processing scheme based upon eigenanalysis. In the proposed scheme, the received signals are weighted and combined both before and after the DFT processing. As a result, the required number of DFT blocks can be significantly reduced. With perfect weighting coefficients, the margin of the performance improvement decreases along with the increase of the number of DFT blocks, thus enabling effective performance and complexity tradeoff. To achieve a maximum average pairwise codeword distance, it will be shown that the maximum number of DFT blocks required is equal to the minimum of the number of receive antennas and the number of distinct paths in the channel. When the number of distinct paths is larger than the number of receive antennas and with a smaller number of DFT blocks, extensive simulation results will also show that near-optimal performance can still be achieved for most channels. Finally, in an OFDM system with differential modulation, we use a signal covariance matrix to obtain the weighting coefficients before the DFT processing. In this case, simulation results will demonstrate that the performance of the proposed scheme can be better than subcarrier-based space combining, but with much lower complexity
