    Positivity of Continuous-Time Descriptor Systems With Time Delays

    This technical note is concerned with positivity characteristic of continuous-time descriptor systems with time delays. First, a set of necessary and sufficient conditions is presented to check the property. Then, considering a descriptor time-delay system with two assumptions, a new time-delay system is established whose positivity is equivalent to that of the original system. Furthermore, a set of necessary and sufficient conditions is provided to check the positivity of the new system. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the validity of the results obtained

    Bounded real lemmas for positive descriptor systems

    A well known result in the theory of linear positive systems is the existence of positive definite diagonal matrix (PDDM) solutions to some well known linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In this paper, based on the positivity characterization, a novel bounded real lemma for continuous positive descriptor systems in terms of strict LMI is first established by the separating hyperplane theorem. The result developed here provides a necessary and sufficient condition for systems to possess H?H? norm less than ? and shows the existence of PDDM solution. Moreover, under certain condition, a simple model reduction method is introduced, which can preserve positivity, stability and H?H? norm of the original systems. An advantage of such method is that systems? matrices of the reduced order systems do not involve solving of LMIs conditions. Then, the obtained results are extended to discrete case. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results

    Constrained control of switched positive systems with discrete and distributed delays

    This paper is concerned with constrained control of switched positive linear systems with discrete and distributed delays. Our goal is to design a nonnegative controller with a prescribed upper bound, such that the closed-loop system is positive and its state trajectory is located in a boundary whenever the initial condition is within the same boundary. In addition, we investigate the case when the state trajectory never reaches the boundary. It is shown that these problems are solvable via linear programming. Both continuous- and discrete-time cases are investigated in this paper. Finally, several illustrative examples are provided to show the validity of the proposed approach. © 2014 TCCT, CAA.postprin

    On passivity and passification of stochastic fuzzy systems with delays: The discrete-time case

By choosing to view this document, you agree to all provisions of the copyright laws protecting it.Takagi–Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models, which are usually represented by a set of linear submodels, can be used to describe or approximate any complex nonlinear systems by fuzzily blending these subsystems, and so, significant research efforts have been devoted to the analysis of such models. This paper is concerned with the passivity and passification problems of the stochastic discrete-time T-S fuzzy systems with delay. We first propose the definition of passivity in the sense of expectation. Then, by utilizing the Lyapunov functional method, the stochastic analysis combined with the matrix inequality techniques, a sufficient condition in terms of linear matrix inequalities is presented, ensuring the passivity performance of the T-S fuzzy models. Finally, based on this criterion, state feedback controller is designed, and several criteria are obtained to make the closed-loop system passive in the sense of expectation. The results acquired in this paper are delay dependent in the sense that they depend on not only the lower bound but also the upper bound of the time-varying delay.     A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers.     On controlled linear diffusions with delay in a model of optimal advertising under uncertainty with memory effects

    We consider a class of dynamic advertising problems under uncertainty in the presence of carryover and distributed forgetting effects, generalizing a classical model of Nerlove and Arrow. In particular, we allow the dynamics of the product goodwill to depend on its past values, as well as previous advertising levels. Building on previous work of two of the authors, the optimal advertising model is formulated as an infinite dimensional stochastic control problem. We obtain (partial) regularity as well as approximation results for the corresponding value function. Under specific structural assumptions we study the effects of delays on the value function and optimal strategy. In the absence of carryover effects, since the value function and the optimal advertising policy can be characterized in terms of the solution of the associated HJB equation, we obtain sharper characterizations of the optimal policy.Comment: numerical example added; minor revision
