    Funding Information: This study is part of an interdisciplinary research project, funded by the Special Research Fund (Bijzonder Onderzoeksfonds) of Ghent University.Introduction: Ontologies are a formal way to represent knowledge in a particular field and have the potential to transform the field of health promotion and digital interventions. However, few researchers in physical activity (PA) are familiar with ontologies, and the field can be difficult to navigate. This systematic review aims to (1) identify ontologies in the field of PA, (2) assess their content and (3) assess their quality. Methods: Databases were searched for ontologies on PA. Ontologies were included if they described PA or sedentary behavior, and were available in English language. We coded whether ontologies covered the user profile, activity, or context domain. For the assessment of quality, we used 12 criteria informed by the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry principles of good ontology practice. Results: Twenty-eight ontologies met the inclusion criteria. All ontologies covered PA, and 19 included information on the user profile. Context was covered by 17 ontologies (physical context, n = 12; temporal context, n = 14; social context: n = 5). Ontologies met an average of 4.3 out of 12 quality criteria. No ontology met all quality criteria. Discussion: This review did not identify a single comprehensive ontology of PA that allowed reuse. Nonetheless, several ontologies may serve as a good starting point for the promotion of PA. We provide several recommendations about the identification, evaluation, and adaptation of ontologies for their further development and use.publishersversionpublishe

    Die vierte industrielle Revolution und der rasante technologische Fortschritt stellen die etablierten Bildungsstrukturen und traditionellen Bildungspraktiken in Frage. Besonders in der Ingenieurausbildung erfordert das lebenslange Lernen, dass man sein Wissen und seine Fähigkeiten ständig verbessern muss, um auf dem Arbeitsmarkt wettbewerbsfähig zu sein. Es besteht die Notwendigkeit eines Paradigmenwechsels in der Bildung und Ausbildung hin zu neuen Technologien wie virtueller Realität und künstlicher Intelligenz. Die Einbeziehung dieser Technologien in ein Bildungsprogramm ist jedoch nicht so einfach wie die Investition in neue Geräte oder Software. Es müssen neue Bildungsprogramme geschaffen oder alte von Grund auf umgestaltet werden. Dabei handelt es sich um komplexe und umfangreiche Prozesse, die Entscheidungsfindung, Design und Entwicklung umfassen. Diese sind mit erheblichen Herausforderungen verbunden, die die Überwindung vieler Hindernisse erfordert. Diese Arbeit stellt eine Methodologie vor, die sich mit den Herausforderungen der Nutzung von Virtueller Realität und Künstlicher Intelligenz als Schlüsseltechnologien in der Ingenieurausbildung befasst. Die Methodologie hat zum Ziel, die Hauptakteure anzuleiten, um den Lernprozess zu verbessern, sowie neuartige und effiziente Lernerfahrungen zu ermöglichen. Da jedes Bildungsprogramm einzigartig ist, folgt die Methodik einem ganzheitlichen Ansatz, um die Erstellung maßgeschneiderter Kurse oder Ausbildungen zu unterstützen. Zu diesem Zweck werden die Wechselwirkung zwischen verschiedenen Aspekten berücksichtigt. Diese werden in den drei Ebenen - Bildung, Technologie und Management zusammengefasst. Die Methodik betont den Einfluss der Technologien auf die Unterrichtsgestaltung und die Managementprozesse. Sie liefert Methoden zur Entscheidungsfindung auf der Grundlage einer umfassenden pädagogischen, technologischen und wirtschaftlichen Analyse. Darüber hinaus unterstützt sie den Prozess der didaktischen Gestaltung durch eine umfassende Kategorisierung der Vor- und Nachteile immersiver Lernumgebungen und zeigt auf, welche ihrer Eigenschaften den Lernprozess verbessern können. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der systematischen Gestaltung immersiver Systeme und der effizienten Erstellung immersiver Anwendungen unter Verwendung von Methoden aus dem Bereich der künstlichen Intelligenz. Es werden vier Anwendungsfälle mit verschiedenen Ausbildungsprogrammen vorgestellt, um die Methodik zu validieren. Jedes Bildungsprogramm hat seine eigenen Ziele und in Kombination decken sie die Validierung aller Ebenen der Methodik ab. Die Methodik wurde iterativ mit jedem Validierungsprojekt weiterentwickelt und verbessert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Methodik zuverlässig und auf viele Szenarien sowie auf die meisten Bildungsstufen und Bereiche übertragbar ist. Durch die Anwendung der in dieser Arbeit vorgestellten Methoden können Interessengruppen immersiven Technologien effektiv und effizient in ihre Unterrichtspraxis integrieren. Darüber hinaus können sie auf der Grundlage der vorgeschlagenen Ansätze Aufwand, Zeit und Kosten für die Planung, Entwicklung und Wartung der immersiven Systeme sparen. Die Technologie verlagert die Rolle des Lehrenden in eine Moderatorrolle. Außerdem bekommen die Lehrkräfte die Möglichkeit die Lernenden individuell zu unterstützen und sich auf deren kognitive Fähigkeiten höherer Ordnung zu konzentrieren. Als Hauptergebnis erhalten die Lernenden eine angemessene, qualitativ hochwertige und zeitgemäße Ausbildung, die sie qualifizierter, erfolgreicher und zufriedener macht

    Young endurance athletes as users of sports information system: Case Polar Electro Oy

    The topic of this Master’s thesis is Polar Flow sports information system, and young athletes as users of it. As a specific target group is the generation Z. The aim of the thesis is to find solutions to the following questions: Is the Polar Flow service in its current state interesting to the young users and what are the elements which make the service interesting to the young users? Answers for these questions were studied with usability testing, where the participants went through Polar Flow service simultaneously answering to questions. The UI views of the usability testing are presented in the research, followed by the development suggestions, which are based on the findings of the usability test. Findings show that Polar Flow service is interesting to the young competitive athletes. Elements, which make the service interesting are the following: the consistent design and accurate data about training, sleep and recovery.Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa aiheena on Polar Flow urheilutietojärjestelmä, ja nuoret urheilijat sen käyttäjinä. Nuorista tarkempana kohderyhmänä sukupolvi Z. Tutkimuksessa haetaan vastauksia kysymyksiin: onko Polar Flow palvelu tämän hetkisessä tilassa mielenkiintoinen nuorille käyttäjille ja mitkä elementit tekevät palvelusta mielenkiintoisen nuorille käyttäjille. Vastauksia näihin kysymyksiin on etsitty käytettävyystutkimuksella, jossa osallistujat kävivät läpi Polar Flow palvelua vastaten samalla kysymyksiin. Tutkimuksessa esitellään käytettävyystutkimuksen UI-näkymät, sekä kehitysehdotukset, jotka perustuvat käytettävyystutkimuksen löydöksiin. Tärkeimmät löydökset tutkimuksessa kertovat Polar Flow palvelun olevan mielenkiintoinen tavoitteellisesti treenaaville nuorille urheilijoille.     Studies in weightlifting have been characterized by unclear results and information paucity, mainly due to the lack of information sharing between athletes, coaches, biomechanists, physiologists and nutritionists. Becoming successful in weightlifting performance requires a unique physiological and biomechanics profile based on a distinctive combination of muscular strength, muscular power, flexibility, and lifting technique. An effective training which is carefully designed and monitored, is needed for accomplishment of consistent high performance. While it takes years of dedicated training, diet is also critical as optimal nutrition is essential for peak performance. Nutritional misinformation can do as much harm to ambitious athletes as good nutrition can help. In spite of several studies on nutrition guidelines for weightlifting training and competition as well as on design and implementation of weightlifting training programs, to the best of authors' knowledge, there is no attempt to semantically model the whole "training-diet-competition" cycle by integrating training, biomechanics, and nutrition domains.This study aims to conceive and design an ontology-enriched knowledge model to guide and support the implementation of "Recommender system of workout and nutrition forweightlifters". In doing so, it will propose: (i) understanding the weightlifting training system, from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives, following a modular ontology modeling, (ii) understanding the weightlifting diet following a modular ontology modeling, (iii) semantically integrating weightlifting and nutrition ontologies to mainly promote nutrition and weightlifting snatch exercises interoperability, (iv) extending modular ontology scope by mining rules while analyzing open data from the literature, and (v) devising reasoning capability toward an automated weightlifting "training-diet-competition" cycle supported by previously mined rulesTo support the above claims, two main artefacts were generated such as: (i) a weightliftingnutritional knowledge questionnaire to assess Thai weightlifting coaches' and athletes'knowledge regarding the weightlifting "training-diet-competition" cycle and (ii) a dual ontologyoriented weightlifting-nutrition knowledge model extended with mined rules and designed following a standard ontology development methodology.Studies in weightlifting have been characterized by unclear results and information paucity, mainly due to the lack of information sharing between athletes, coaches, biomechanists, physiologists and nutritionists.     Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)

    This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio

    The experience of using role-play and simulated practice as an adjunct to paramedic placement learning

    This study examines the current experiences of paramedic students regarding the perceptions, understanding and utilisation of role-play plus simulation in a paramedic degree programme. This area is underexplored, so it is situated in the context of paramedic practice, training and education landscape in UK, Australia, Canada and the USA, and cognate professions.The skills training in its original format remains, as does the on-the job clinical training (hospital placement and ambulance internship) as these are set regulatory requirements. Role-play and task focused simulation is used as part of syndicate learning for skills development. A mixed methodology, comprising both qualitative and quantitative approaches, including an exploratory sequential design, was used in this research. This was done in order to evaluate the student perceptions of their current placement experience and to explore the perception of combining simulation and role-playing.The study results show that the current educational model of clinical placement is flawed. After a brief exposure to an exemplar event, students preferred the combination of simulation and role-playing over the use of either technique independently. Adoption of this technique firstly requires a set definition of terminology and consistent interpretation within the discipline.A consolidation of the students’ experience is required by enhancing the mentorship supports. Further research is needed to design and develop the combination of role-playing and simulation to enhance student learning in the simulation laboratory. This study promotes positive social change by providing data to the educators and key decision makers of the paramedic programme on students’ perceptions of the benefits of a technique that is able to support instruction and augment the students’ clinical placement experience

    Listed in 2020 Dean's List of Exceptional ThesesFigures are re-used with permission or in the public domain.This study investigated contemplative pedagogy and practice within New Zealand universities, in the form of both mindfulness interventions targeting wellness and connection, and classroom pedagogy fostering attentional, critical, and creative thinking. Little previous research had been undertaken on the topic in this country. The integrated research design developed for the project - Critical Realist Mixed Methods Sequential Explanatory Design (CRMMSED) - included two phases, an extensive exploratory survey phase (n = 258), and an intensive, in-depth interview phase (n = 22). Critical Realist abductive and dialectical analyses took place alongside statistical and thematic analyses. The findings show that educators incorporate contemplative methods to address pressing issues ranging from student stress to climate change. Most contemplative teaching takes place within extant disciplinary framings. Key entry points into academia are through reflective practice in the contexts of professional education, critical social justice teaching, and creative projects. The study suggests that contemplative education arises in response to complex social factors involving several disconnects - with nature, people, the self, and the capacity for self-transcendence. This emergence is an outworking of historical forces and a response to research showing the potential of contemplative education for ameliorating difficult problems
