Datacenter Traffic Control: Understanding Techniques and Trade-offs
Datacenters provide cost-effective and flexible access to scalable compute
and storage resources necessary for today's cloud computing needs. A typical
datacenter is made up of thousands of servers connected with a large network
and usually managed by one operator. To provide quality access to the variety
of applications and services hosted on datacenters and maximize performance, it
deems necessary to use datacenter networks effectively and efficiently.
Datacenter traffic is often a mix of several classes with different priorities
and requirements. This includes user-generated interactive traffic, traffic
with deadlines, and long-running traffic. To this end, custom transport
protocols and traffic management techniques have been developed to improve
datacenter network performance.
In this tutorial paper, we review the general architecture of datacenter
networks, various topologies proposed for them, their traffic properties,
general traffic control challenges in datacenters and general traffic control
objectives. The purpose of this paper is to bring out the important
characteristics of traffic control in datacenters and not to survey all
existing solutions (as it is virtually impossible due to massive body of
existing research). We hope to provide readers with a wide range of options and
factors while considering a variety of traffic control mechanisms. We discuss
various characteristics of datacenter traffic control including management
schemes, transmission control, traffic shaping, prioritization, load balancing,
multipathing, and traffic scheduling. Next, we point to several open challenges
as well as new and interesting networking paradigms. At the end of this paper,
we briefly review inter-datacenter networks that connect geographically
dispersed datacenters which have been receiving increasing attention recently

A Framework for Multiaccess Support for Unreliable Internet Traffic using Multipath DCCP
Mobile nodes are typically equipped with multiple radios and can connect to multiple radio access networks (e.g. WiFi, LTE and 5G). Consequently, it is important to design mechanisms that efficiently manage multiple network interfaces for aggregating the capacity, steering of traffic flows or switching flows among multiple interfaces. While such multi-access solutions have the potential to increase the overall traffic throughput and communication reliability, the variable latencies on different access links introduce packet delay variation which has negative effect on the application quality of service and user quality of experience. In this paper, we present a new IP-compatible multipath framework for heterogeneous access networks. The framework uses Multipath Datagram Congestion Control Protocol (MP-DCCP) - a set of extensions to regular DCCP - to enable a transport connection to operate across multiple access networks, simultaneously. We present the design of the new protocol framework and show simulation and experimental testbed results that (1) demonstrate the operation of the new framework, and (2) demonstrate the ability of our solution to manage significant packet delay variation caused by the asymmetry of network paths, by applying pluggable packet scheduling or reordering algorithms
Endpoint-transparent Multipath Transport with Software-defined Networks
Multipath forwarding consists of using multiple paths simultaneously to
transport data over the network. While most such techniques require endpoint
modifications, we investigate how multipath forwarding can be done inside the
network, transparently to endpoint hosts. With such a network-centric approach,
packet reordering becomes a critical issue as it may cause critical performance
degradation.
We present a Software Defined Network architecture which automatically sets
up multipath forwarding, including solutions for reordering and performance
improvement, both at the sending side through multipath scheduling algorithms,
and the receiver side, by resequencing out-of-order packets in a dedicated
in-network buffer.
We implemented a prototype with commonly available technology and evaluated
it in both emulated and real networks. Our results show consistent throughput
improvements, thanks to the use of aggregated path capacity. We give
comparisons to Multipath TCP, where we show our approach can achieve a similar
performance while offering the advantage of endpoint transparency
DoS protection for a Pragmatic Multiservice Network Based on Programmable Networks

ideas of programmable networks. Active routers are capable of processing both
active and legacy packets. This scenario is vulnerable to a Denial of Service attack,
which consists in inserting false legacy packets into active routers. We
propose a mechanism for detecting the injection of fake legacy packets into active
routers. This mechanism consists in exchanging accounting information on
the traffic between neighboring active routers. The exchange of accounting information
must be carried out in a secure way using secure active packets. The
proposed mechanism is sensitive to the loss of packets. To deal with this problem
some improvements in the mechanism has been proposed. An important issue
is the procedure for discharging packets when an attack has been detected.
We propose an easy and efficient mechanism that would be improved in future

Transport congestion events detection (TCED): towards decorrelating congestion detection from TCP
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) uses a loss-based algorithm to estimate whether the network is congested or not.
The main difficulty for this algorithm is to distinguish spurious from real network congestion events. Other research studies have proposed to enhance the reliability of this congestion estimation by modifying the internal TCP algorithm.
In this paper, we propose an original congestion event algorithm implemented independently of the TCP source code. Basically, we propose a modular architecture to implement a congestion event detection algorithm to cope with the increasing complexity of the TCP code and we use it to understand why some spurious congestion events might not be
detected in some complex cases. We show that our proposal is able to increase the reliability of TCP NewReno congestion detection algorithm that might help to the design of detection criterion independent of the TCP code. We find out that solutions based only on RTT (Round-Trip Time) estimation are not accurate enough to cover all existing cases.
Furthermore, we evaluate our algorithm with and without network reordering where other inaccuracies, not previously
identified, occur
PABO: Mitigating Congestion via Packet Bounce in Data Center Networks
In today's data center, a diverse mix of throughput-sensitive long flows and
delay-sensitive short flows are commonly presented in shallow-buffered
switches. Long flows could potentially block the transmission of
delay-sensitive short flows, leading to degraded performance. Congestion can
also be caused by the synchronization of multiple TCP connections for short
flows, as typically seen in the partition/aggregate traffic pattern. While
multiple end-to-end transport-layer solutions have been proposed, none of them
have tackled the real challenge: reliable transmission in the network. In this
paper, we fill this gap by presenting PABO -- a novel link-layer design that
can mitigate congestion by temporarily bouncing packets to upstream switches.
PABO's design fulfills the following goals: i) providing per-flow based flow
control on the link layer, ii) handling transient congestion without the
intervention of end devices, and iii) gradually back propagating the congestion
signal to the source when the network is not capable to handle the
congestion.Experiment results show that PABO can provide prominent advantage of
mitigating transient congestions and can achieve significant gain on end-to-end
delay

Survey of traffic control schemes and error control schemes for ATM networks
Among the techniques proposed for B-ISDN transfer mode, ATM concept is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its flexibility and efficiency. This paper surveys and reviews a number of topics related to ATM networks. Those topics cover congestion control, provision of multiple classes of traffic, and error control. Due to the nature of ATM networks, those issues are far more challenging than in conventional networks. Sorne of the more promising solutions to those issues are surveyed, and the corresponding results on performance are summarized. Future research problems in ATM protocol aspect are also presented
Efficient Micro-Mobility using Intra-domain Multicast-based Mechanisms (M&M)
One of the most important metrics in the design of IP mobility protocols is
the handover performance. The current Mobile IP (MIP) standard has been shown
to exhibit poor handover performance. Most other work attempts to modify MIP to
slightly improve its efficiency, while others propose complex techniques to
replace MIP. Rather than taking these approaches, we instead propose a new
architecture for providing efficient and smooth handover, while being able to
co-exist and inter-operate with other technologies. Specifically, we propose an
intra-domain multicast-based mobility architecture, where a visiting mobile is
assigned a multicast address to use while moving within a domain. Efficient
handover is achieved using standard multicast join/prune mechanisms. Two
approaches are proposed and contrasted. The first introduces the concept
proxy-based mobility, while the other uses algorithmic mapping to obtain the
multicast address of visiting mobiles. We show that the algorithmic mapping
approach has several advantages over the proxy approach, and provide mechanisms
to support it. Network simulation (using NS-2) is used to evaluate our scheme
and compare it to other routing-based micro-mobility schemes - CIP and HAWAII.
The proactive handover results show that both M&M and CIP shows low handoff
delay and packet reordering depth as compared to HAWAII. The reason for M&M's
comparable performance with CIP is that both use bi-cast in proactive handover.
The M&M, however, handles multiple border routers in a domain, where CIP fails.
We also provide a handover algorithm leveraging the proactive path setup
capability of M&M, which is expected to outperform CIP in case of reactive
