    Object Tracking in Vary Lighting Conditions for Fog based Intelligent Surveillance of Public Spaces

    With rapid development of computer vision and artificial intelligence, cities are becoming more and more intelligent. Recently, since intelligent surveillance was applied in all kind of smart city services, object tracking attracted more attention. However, two serious problems blocked development of visual tracking in real applications. The first problem is its lower performance under intense illumination variation while the second issue is its slow speed. This paper addressed these two problems by proposing a correlation filter based tracker. Fog computing platform was deployed to accelerate the proposed tracking approach. The tracker was constructed by multiple positions' detections and alternate templates (MPAT). The detection position was repositioned according to the estimated speed of target by optical flow method, and the alternate template was stored with a template update mechanism, which were all computed at the edge. Experimental results on large-scale public benchmark datasets showed the effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison with state-of-the-art methods

    A mask-based approach for the geometric calibration of thermal-infrared cameras

    Accurate and efficient thermal-infrared (IR) camera calibration is important for advancing computer vision research within the thermal modality. This paper presents an approach for geometrically calibrating individual and multiple cameras in both the thermal and visible modalities. The proposed technique can be used to correct for lens distortion and to simultaneously reference both visible and thermal-IR cameras to a single coordinate frame. The most popular existing approach for the geometric calibration of thermal cameras uses a printed chessboard heated by a flood lamp and is comparatively inaccurate and difficult to execute. Additionally, software toolkits provided for calibration either are unsuitable for this task or require substantial manual intervention. A new geometric mask with high thermal contrast and not requiring a flood lamp is presented as an alternative calibration pattern. Calibration points on the pattern are then accurately located using a clustering-based algorithm which utilizes the maximally stable extremal region detector. This algorithm is integrated into an automatic end-to-end system for calibrating single or multiple cameras. The evaluation shows that using the proposed mask achieves a mean reprojection error up to 78% lower than that using a heated chessboard. The effectiveness of the approach is further demonstrated by using it to calibrate two multiple-camera multiple-modality setups.     Counter-terrorism in cyber–physical spaces:Best practices and technologies from the state of the art

    Context: The demand for protection and security of physical spaces and urban areas increased with the escalation of terroristic attacks in recent years. We envision with the proposed cyber–physical systems and spaces, a city that would indeed become a smarter urbanistic object, proactively providing alerts and being protective against any threat. Objectives: This survey intend to provide a systematic multivocal literature survey comprised of an updated, comprehensive and timely overview of state of the art in counter-terrorism cyber–physical systems, hence aimed at the protection of cyber–physical spaces. Hence, provide guidelines to law enforcement agencies and practitioners providing a description of technologies and best practices for the protection of public spaces. Methods: We analyzed 112 papers collected from different online sources, both from the academic field and from websites and blogs ranging from 2004 till mid-2022. Results: (a) There is no one single bullet-proof solution available for the protection of public spaces. (b) From our analysis we found three major active fields for the protection of public spaces: Information Technologies, Architectural approaches, Organizational field. (c) While the academic suggest best practices and methodologies for the protection of urban areas, the market did not provide any type of implementation of such suggested approaches, which shows a lack of fertilization between academia and industry. Conclusion: The overall analysis has led us to state that there is no one single solution available, conversely, multiple methods and techniques can be put in place to guarantee safety and security in public spaces. The techniques range from architectural design to rethink the design of public spaces keeping security into account in continuity, to emerging technologies such as AI and predictive surveillance.</p

    Smart streetlights: a feasibility study

    The world's cities are growing. The effects of population growth and urbanisation mean that more people are living in cities than ever before, a trend set to continue. This urbanisation poses problems for the future. With a growing population comes more strain on local resources, increased traffic and congestion, and environmental decline, including more pollution, loss of green spaces, and the formation of urban heat islands. Thankfully, many of these stressors can be alleviated with better management and procedures, particularly in the context of road infrastructure. For example, with better traffic data, signalling can be smoothed to reduce congestion, parking can be made easier, and streetlights can be dimmed in real time to match real-world road usage. However, obtaining this information on a citywide scale is prohibitively expensive due to the high costs of labour and materials associated with installing sensor hardware. This study investigated the viability of a streetlight-integrated sensor system to affordably obtain traffic and environmental information. This investigation was conducted in two stages: 1) the development of a hardware prototype, and 2) evaluation of an evolved prototype system. In Stage 1 of the study, the development of the prototype sensor system was conducted over three design iterations. These iterations involved, in iteration 1, the live deployment of the prototype system in an urban setting to select and evaluate sensors for environmental monitoring, and in iterations 2 and 3, deployments on roads with live and controlled traffic to develop and test sensors for remote traffic detection. In the final iteration, which involved controlled passes of over 600 vehicle, 600 pedestrian, and 400 cyclist passes, the developed system that comprised passive-infrared motion detectors, lidar, and thermal sensors, could detect and count traffic from a streetlight-integrated configuration with 99%, 84%, and 70% accuracy, respectively. With the finalised sensor system design, Stage 1 showed that traffic and environmental sensing from a streetlight-integrated configuration was feasible and effective using on-board processing with commercially available and inexpensive components. In Stage 2, financial and social assessments of the developed sensor system were conducted to evaluate its viability and value in a community. An evaluation tool for simulating streetlight installations was created to measure the effects of implementing the smart streetlight system. The evaluation showed that the on-demand traffic-adaptive dimming enabled by the smart streetlight system was able to reduce the electrical and maintenance costs of lighting installations. As a result, a 'smart' LED streetlight system was shown to outperform conventional always-on streetlight configurations in terms of financial value within a period of five to 12 years, depending on the installation's local traffic characteristics. A survey regarding the public acceptance of smart streetlight systems was also conducted and assessed the factors that influenced support of its applications. In particular, the Australia-wide survey investigated applications around road traffic improvement, streetlight dimming, and walkability, and quantified participants' support through willingness-to-pay assessments to enable each application. Community support of smart road applications was generally found to be positive and welcomed, especially in areas with a high dependence on personal road transport, and from participants adversely affected by spill light in their homes. Overall, the findings of this study indicate that our cities, and roads in particular, can and should be made smarter. The technology currently exists and is becoming more affordable to allow communities of all sizes to implement smart streetlight systems for the betterment of city services, resource management, and civilian health and wellbeing. The sooner that these technologies are embraced, the sooner they can be adapted to the specific needs of the community and environment for a more sustainable and innovative future

    Treball desenvolupat en el marc del programa "European Project Semester".Digital Twins have been around since the early 2000s, but it has only been until now that they started to be affordable thanks to the Internet of Things. In the realm of smart cities, a Digital Twin is a virtual model of a city, a replica of the physical world, which are rapidly becoming indispensable tools to visualize the pulse of the city in real time with layered data sources of buildings, urban infrastructure, utilities, businesses, movement of people and vehicles. The advantages of implementing this concept is that it significantly increases the city's stability. Testing in a virtual model helps prevent emergencies, properly allocate resources that reduces costs and the chances of failure in the real world. This project is a continuation of the last year's theoretical study Digital Twins Ⅰ and its aim is to continue the research about Digital City Twins and explore the Big Data from the city sensors of Vilanova i la Geltrú. A group of five international students, led by the company Neapolis, are working on transforming the city into a smart one within the summer semester of the academic year 2020- 2021. In the process, we studied scientific articles, consulted with university professors from different countries (Spain, Belgium, Brazil), contacted IT and Data Security companies to obtain the necessary information. The report provides a study of practical examples using Digital Twins around the world, their impact on the city improvement, comparison of different platforms and software for developing Digital Twins and the reasoned choice of the best option for use in the next part of the project. Furthermore, it describes Information Infrastructure of Digital Cities, Big Data Management, Data Security and the implementation of Digital Twins in Vilanova i la Geltrú. The Big Data received from the city authorities was read and analyzed in the data part with necessary conclusions. This project made a great contribution to the further development of the Digital Twins for Vilanova i la Geltrú and will simplify the practical implementation for our followers of the next EPS project.Incomin

    Detection of traffic anomalies for a safety system of smart city

    For modern smart city with sustainable development we need to provide reasonable level of safety and efficient management of the resources. Instant response to incidents and abnormal situations will help to provide such high bars for city residents, which requires deployment of application of intelligent information processing and data analytics into infrastructure. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is playing a key part in assurance of city security - most of the modern large cities equip with powerful monitoring systems and surveillance cameras. Video data covers most of the city and could be efficiently used to find anomalies or trends. This hard task for non-stop video monitoring could be solved by modern achievements in machine learning and computer vision techniques, which can automate the process of video analysis and identify anomalies and incidents without human intervention. In this paper, we used computer vision methods like object detection and tracking, as well as neuron networks for classification and detection of anomalies on real time video. As a result of this work we suggested the working approach for detection of vehicle/pedestrian violating legal trajectory anomaly, which we tested on real-time video provided by surveillance cameras of the city of Kazan
