Power electronics options for large wind farm integration : VSC-based HVDC transmission

    Get PDF
This paper describes the use of voltage source converter based HVDC transmission (VSC transmission) system for grid integration of large wind farms over long distance. The wind farms can be based on either doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) or fixed speed induction generator (FSIG). The paper describes the operation principles and control strategies of the proposed system. Automatic power balancing during network AC fault is achieved without communication between the two converters. PSCAD/EMTDC simulations are presented to demonstrate the robust performance and to validate the proposed system during various operating conditions such as variations of generation and AC fault conditions. The proposed VSC transmission system has technical and economic advantages over a conventional AC connection for integrating large wind farms over long distanc

On-board B-ISDN fast packet switching architectures. Phase 2: Development. Proof-of-concept architecture definition report

    Get PDF
For the next-generation packet switched communications satellite system with onboard processing and spot-beam operation, a reliable onboard fast packet switch is essential to route packets from different uplink beams to different downlink beams. The rapid emergence of point-to-point services such as video distribution, and the large demand for video conference, distributed data processing, and network management makes the multicast function essential to a fast packet switch (FPS). The satellite's inherent broadcast features gives the satellite network an advantage over the terrestrial network in providing multicast services. This report evaluates alternate multicast FPS architectures for onboard baseband switching applications and selects a candidate for subsequent breadboard development. Architecture evaluation and selection will be based on the study performed in phase 1, 'Onboard B-ISDN Fast Packet Switching Architectures', and other switch architectures which have become commercially available as large scale integration (LSI) devices

HVAC SYSTEM REMOTE MONITORING AND DIAGNOSIS

    Get PDF
A monitoring system for an HVAC system of a building includes a monitoring server located remotely from the building. The monitoring server receives, from a device installed at the building, (i) time-domain current data based on a measured aggregate current supplied to a plurality of components of the HVAC system, and (ii) data based on frequency-domain current data of the measured aggregate current. Based on the received data, the monitoring server accesses (i) whether a failure has occurred in a first com ponent of the plurality of components and (ii) generates a preliminary advisory in response to determining that the failure has occurred. The monitoring server compares the preliminary advisory to a threshold value based on data stored from prior advisories. If the preliminary advisory is on a first side of the threshold value, the monitoring server provides the preliminary advisory as a first advisory to a technician for review

Design-Oriented Transient Stability Analysis of PLL-Synchronized Voltage-Source Converters

    Get PDF
Differing from synchronous generators, there are lack of physical laws governing the synchronization dynamics of voltage-source converters (VSCs). The widely used phase-locked loop (PLL) plays a critical role in maintaining the synchronism of current-controlled VSCs, whose dynamics are highly affected by the power exchange between VSCs and the grid. This paper presents a design-oriented analysis on the transient stability of PLL-synchronized VSCs, i.e., the synchronization stability of VSCs under large disturbances, by employing the phase portrait approach. Insights into the stabilizing effects of the first- and second-order PLLs are provided with the quantitative analysis. It is revealed that simply increasing the damping ratio of the second-order PLL may fail to stabilize VSCs during severe grid faults, while the first-order PLL can always guarantee the transient stability of VSCs when equilibrium operation points exist. An adaptive PLL that switches between the second-order and the first-order PLL during the fault-occurring/-clearing transient is proposed for preserving both the transient stability and the phase tracking accuracy. Time-domain simulations and experimental tests, considering both the grid fault and the fault recovery, are performed, and the obtained results validate the theoretical findings

Line protection in inverter supplied networks

New protection methods are required to protect a distribution system when supplied by current limited converters. In this paper, a method of converter control is proposed to limit the current by reducing the voltage in the faulted phase or phases while keeping the voltage of the healthy phases unaltered. Unsymmetrical fault analysis is performed to calculate the sequence currents and voltages at the relay location, when system is supplied by a converter. Based on that converter control, distance relay performances have been evaluated in both grid-connected and islanded mode operations. Distance relay, combined with MHO and negative sequence impedance directional characteristics, is proposed as a protection scheme for the distribution system for different types of faults under the current limited environment. The results are validated through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation and MATLAB calculations

Inversion-Based Approach for Detection and Isolation of Faults in Switched Linear Systems

    Get PDF
This paper addresses the problem of the left inversion of switched linear systems from a diagnostics perspective. The problem of left inversion is to reconstruct the input of a system with the knowledge of its output, whose differentiation is usually required. In the case of this work, the objective is to reconstruct the system’s unknown inputs, based on the knowledge of its outputs, switching sequence and known inputs. With the inverse model of the switched linear system, a real-time Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) algorithm with an integrated Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) that is capable of detecting and isolating abrupt faults occurring in the system is developed. In order to attenuate the effects of unknown disturbances and noise at the output of the inverse model, a smoothing strategy is also used. The results are illustrated with an example. The performance of the method is validated experimentally in a dc-dc boost converter, using a low-cost microcontroller, without any additional components. This work was funded by FCT—Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia, within the project SAICTPAC/0004/2015—POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016434.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
