    Optimization of job shop scheduling with material handling by automated guided vehicle

    Job Shop Scheduling with Material Handling has attracted increasing attention in both industry and academia, especially with the inception of Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. A smart manufacturing system calls for efficient and effective production planning. On a typical modern shop floor, jobs of various types follow certain processing routes through machines or work centers, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are utilized to handle the jobs. In this research, the optimization of a shop floor with AGV is carried out, and we also consider the planning scenario under variable processing time of jobs. The goal is to minimize the shop floor production makespan or other specific criteria correlated with makespan, by scheduling the operations of job processing and routing the AGVs. This dissertation includes three research studies that will constitute my doctoral work. In the first study, we discuss a simplified case in which the scheduling problem is reformulated into a vehicle dispatching (assignment) problem. A few AGV dispatching strategies are proposed based on the deterministic optimization of network assignment problems. The AGV dispatching strategies take future transportation requests into consideration and optimally configure transportation resources such that material handling can be more efficient than those adopting classic AGV assignment rules in which only the current request is considered. The strategies are demonstrated and validated with a case study based on a shop floor in literature and compared to classic AGV assignment rules. The results show that AGV dispatching with adoption of the proposed strategy has better performance on some specific criterions like minimizing job waiting time. In the second study, an efficient heuristic algorithm for classic Job Shop Scheduling with Material Handling is proposed. Typically, the job shop scheduling problem and material handling problem are studied separately due to the complexity of both problems. However, considering these two types of decisions in the same model offers benefits since the decisions are related to each other. In this research, we aim to study the scheduling of job operations together with the AGV routing/scheduling, and a formulation as well as solution techniques are proposed. The proposed heuristic algorithm starts from an optimal job shop scheduling solution without limiting the size of AGV fleet, and iteratively reduces the number of available vehicles until the fleet size is equal to the original requirements. The computational experiments suggest that compared to existing solution techniques in literature, the proposed algorithm can achieve comparable solution quality on makespan with much higher computational efficiency. In the third study, we take the variability of processing time into consideration in optimizing job shop scheduling with material handling. Variability caused by random effects and deterioration is discussed, and a series of models are developed to accommodate random and deteriorating processing time respectively. With random processing time, the model is formulated as a Stochastic Programming Job Shop Scheduling with Material Handling model, and with deteriorating processing time the model can be nonlinear under specific deteriorating functions. Based on a widely adopted dataset in existing literature, the stochastic programming model were solved with Pyomo, and models with deterioration were linearized and solved with CPLEX. By considering variable processing time, the JSSMH models can better adapt to real production scenarios

    A multiobjective evolutionary algorithm for achieving energy efficiency in production environments integrated with multiple automated guided vehicles

    Increasing energy shortages and environmental pollution have made energy efficiency an urgent concern in manufacturing plants. Most studies looking into sustainable production in general and energy-efficient production scheduling in particular, however, have not paid much attention to logistical factors (e.g., transport and setup). This study integrates multiple automated guided vehicles (AGVs) into a job-shop environment. We propose a multiobjective scheduling model that considers machine processing, sequence-dependent setup and AGV transport, aiming to simultaneously minimize the makespan, total idle time of machines and total energy consumption of both machines and AGVs. To solve this problem, an effective multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (EMOEA) is developed. Within the EMOEA, an efficient encoding/decoding method is designed to represent and decode each solution. A new crossover operator is proposed for AGV assignment and AGV speed sequences. To balance the exploration and exploitation ability of the EMOEA, an opposition-based learning strategy is incorporated. A total of 75 benchmark instances and a real-world case are used for our experimental study. Taguchi analysis is applied to determine the best combination of key parameters for the EMOEA. Extensive computational experiments show that properly increasing the number of AGVs can shorten the waiting time of machines and achieve a balance between economic and environmental objectives for production systems. The experimental results confirm that the proposed EMOEA is significantly better at solving the problem than three other well-known algorithms. Our findings here have significant managerial implications for real-world manufacturing environments integrated with AGVs

    The synergistic effect of operational research and big data analytics in greening container terminal operations: a review and future directions

    Container Terminals (CTs) are continuously presented with highly interrelated, complex, and uncertain planning tasks. The ever-increasing intensity of operations at CTs in recent years has also resulted in increasing environmental concerns, and they are experiencing an unprecedented pressure to lower their emissions. Operational Research (OR), as a key player in the optimisation of the complex decision problems that arise from the quay and land side operations at CTs, has been therefore presented with new challenges and opportunities to incorporate environmental considerations into decision making and better utilise the ‘big data’ that is continuously generated from the never-stopping operations at CTs. The state-of-the-art literature on OR's incorporation of environmental considerations and its interplay with Big Data Analytics (BDA) is, however, still very much underdeveloped, fragmented, and divergent, and a guiding framework is completely missing. This paper presents a review of the most relevant developments in the field and sheds light on promising research opportunities for the better exploitation of the synergistic effect of the two disciplines in addressing CT operational problems, while incorporating uncertainty and environmental concerns efficiently. The paper finds that while OR has thus far contributed to improving the environmental performance of CTs (rather implicitly), this can be much further stepped up with more explicit incorporation of environmental considerations and better exploitation of BDA predictive modelling capabilities. New interdisciplinary research at the intersection of conventional CT optimisation problems, energy management and sizing, and net-zero technology and energy vectors adoption is also presented as a prominent line of future research

    This research topic aims at enterprise-wide modeling and optimization (EWMO) through the development and application of integrated modeling, simulation and optimization methodologies, and computer-aided tools for reliable and sustainable improvement opportunities within the entire manufacturing network (raw materials, production plants, distribution, retailers, and customers) and its components. This integrated approach incorporates information from the local primary control and supervisory modules into the scheduling/planning formulation. That makes it possible to dynamically react to incidents that occur in the network components at the appropriate decision-making level, requiring fewer resources, emitting less waste, and allowing for better responsiveness in changing market requirements and operational variations, reducing cost, waste, energy consumption and environmental impact, and increasing the benefits. More recently, the exploitation of new technology integration, such as through semantic models in formal knowledge models, allows for the capture and utilization of domain knowledge, human knowledge, and expert knowledge toward comprehensive intelligent management.     Process Planning for Assembly and Hybrid Manufacturing in Smart Environments

    Manufacturers strive for efficiently managing the consequences arising from the product proliferation during the entire product life cycle. New manufacturing trends such as smart manufacturing (Industry 4.0) present a substantial opportunity for managing variety. The main objective of this research is to help the manufacturers with handling the challenges arising from the product variety by utilizing the technological advances of the new manufacturing trends. This research focuses mainly on the process planning phase. This research aims at developing novel process planning methods for utilizing the technological advances accompanied by the new manufacturing trends such as smart manufacturing (Industry 4.0) in order to manage the product variety. The research has successfully addressed the macro process planning of a product family for two manufacturing domains: assembly and hybrid manufacturing. A new approach was introduced for assembly sequencing based on the notion of soft-wired galled networks used in evolutionary studies in Biological and phylogenetic sciences. A knowledge discovery model was presented by exploiting the assembly sequence data records of the legacy products in order to extract the embedded knowledge in such data and use it to speed up the assembly sequence planning. The new approach has the capability to overcome the critical limitation of assembly sequence retrieval methods that are not able to capture more than one assembly sequence for a given product. A novel genetic algorithm-based model was developed for that purpose. The extracted assembly sequence network is representing alternative assembly sequences. These alternative assembly sequences can be used by a smart system in which its components are connected together through a wireless sensor network to allow a smart material handling system to change its routing in case any disruptions happened. A novel concept in the field of product variety management by generating product family platforms and process plans for customization into different product variants utilizing additive and subtractive processes is introduced for the first time. A new mathematical programming optimization model is proposed. The model objective is to provide the optimum selection of features that can form a single product platform and the processes needed to customize this platform into different product variants that fall within the same product family, taking into consideration combining additive and subtractive manufacturing. For multi-platform and their associated process plans, a phylogenetic median-joining network algorithm based model is used that can be utilized in case of the demand and the costs are unknown. Furthermore, a novel genetic algorithm-based model is developed for generating multi-platform, and their associated process plans in case of the demand and the costs are known. The model\u27s objective is to minimize the total manufacturing cost. The developed models were applied on examples of real products for demonstration and validation. Moreover, comparisons with related existing methods were conducted to demonstrate the superiority of the developed models. The outcomes of this research provide efficient and easy to implement process planning for managing product variety benefiting from the advances in the technology of the new manufacturing trends. The developed models and methods present a package of variety management solutions that can significantly support manufacturers at the process planning stage

    Cost Factor Focused Scheduling and Sequencing: A Neoteric Literature Review

    The hastily emergent concern from researchers in the application of scheduling and sequencing has urged the necessity for analysis of the latest research growth to construct a new outline. This paper focuses on the literature on cost minimization as a primary aim in scheduling problems represented with less significance as a whole in the past literature reviews. The purpose of this paper is to have an intensive study to clarify the development of cost-based scheduling and sequencing (CSS) by reviewing the work published over several parameters for improving the understanding in this field. Various parameters, such as scheduling models, algorithms, industries, journals, publishers, publication year, authors, countries, constraints, objectives, uncertainties, computational time, and programming languages and optimization software packages are considered. In this research, the literature review of CSS is done for thirteen years (2010-2022). Although CSS research originated in manufacturing, it has been observed that CSS research publications also addressed case studies based on health, transportation, railway, airport, steel, textile, education, ship, petrochemical, inspection, and construction projects. A detailed evaluation of the literature is followed by significant information found in the study, literature analysis, gaps identification, constraints of work done, and opportunities in future research for the researchers and experts from the industries in CSS

    Proposition d’une architecture holonique auto-organisée et évolutive pour le pilotage des systèmes de production

    The manufacturing world is being deeply challenged with a set of ever demanding constraints where from one side, the costumers are requiring products to be more customizable, with higher quality at lower prices, and on other side, companies have to deal on a daily basis with internal disturbances that range from machine breakdown to worker absence and from demand fluctuation to frequent production changes. This dissertation proposes a manufacturing control architecture, following the holonic principles developed in the ADAptive holonic COntrol aRchitecture (ADACOR) and extending it taking inspiration in evolutionary theories and making use of self- organization mechanisms. The use of evolutionary theories enrich the proposed control architecture by allowing evolution in two distinct ways, responding accordingly to the type and degree of the disturbance that appears. The first component, named behavioural self- organization, allows each system’s entity to dynamically adapt its internal behaviour, addressing small disturbances. The second component, named structural self-organization, addresses bigger disturbances by allowing the system entities to re-arrange their rela- tionships, and consequently changing the system in a structural manner. The proposed self-organized holonic manufacturing control architecture was validated at a AIP-PRIMECA flexible manufacturing cell. The achieved experimental results have also shown an improvement of the key performance indicators over the hierarchical and heterarchical control architecture.Le monde des entreprises est profondément soumis à un ensemble de contraintes toujours plus exigeantes provenant d’une part des clients, exigeant des produits plus personnalisables, de qualité supérieure et à faible coût, et d’autre part des aléas internes auxentreprises, comprenant les pannes machines, les défaillances humaines, la fluctuation de la demande, les fréquentes variations de production. Cette thèse propose une architecture de contrôle de systèmes de production, basée sur les principes holoniques développées dans l’architecture ADACOR (ADAptive holonic COntrol aRchitecture), et l’étendant en s’inspirant des théories de l’évolution et en utilisant des mécanismes d’auto-organisation. L’utilisation des théories de l’évolution enrichit l’architecture de contrôle en permettant l’évolution de deux manières distinctes, en réponse au type et au degré de la perturbation apparue. Le premier mode d’adaptation, appelé auto-organisation comportementale, permet à chaque entité qui compose le système d’adapter dynamiquement leur comportement interne, gérant de cette façon de petites perturbations. Le second mode, nommé auto-organisation structurelle, traite de plus grandes perturbations, en permettant aux entités du système de ré-organiser leurs relations, et par conséquent modifier structurellement le système. L’architecture holonique auto-organisée de contrôle de systèmes de production proposée dans cette thèse a été validée sur une cellule de production flexible AIP-PRIMECA. Les résultats ont montré une amélioration des indicateurs clés de performance par rapport aux architectures de contrôle hiérarchiques et hétérarchiques
