Electrical machines are one of the most important components of the industrial world. They are at the heart of the new industrial revolution, brought forth by the development of electromobility and renewable energy systems. Electric motors must meet the most stringent requirements of reliability, availability, and high efficiency in order, among other things, to match the useful lifetime of power electronics in complex system applications and compete in the market under ever-increasing pressure to deliver the highest performance criteria. Today, thanks to the application of highly efficient numerical algorithms running on high-performance computers, it is possible to design electric machines and very complex drive systems faster and at a lower cost. At the same time, progress in the field of material science and technology enables the development of increasingly complex motor designs and topologies. The purpose of this Special Issue is to contribute to this development of electric machines. The publication of this collection of scientific articles, dedicated to the topic of electric machine design and application, contributes to the dissemination of the above information among professionals dealing with electrical machines

Passivity - Based Control and Stability Analysis for Hydro-Solar Power Systems

Wind power, as the main renewable energy source, is increasingly deployed and connected into electrical networks thanks to the development of wind energy conversion technologies. This dissertation is focusing on research related to wind power system include grid-connected/islanded wind power systems operation and control design, wind power quality, wind power prediction technologies, and its applications in microgrids. The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine is popular in the wind industry and thus has been researched in this Dissertation. In order to investigate reasons of harmonic generation in wind power systems, a DFIG wind turbine is modeled by using general vector representation of voltage, current and magnetic flux in the presence of harmonics. In this Dissertation, a method of short term wind power prediction for a wind power plant is developed by training neural networks in Matlab software based on historical data of wind speed and wind direction. The model proposed is shown to achieve a high accuracy with respect to the measured data. Based on the above research work, a microgrid with high wind energy penetration has been designed and simulated by using Matlab/Simulink. Besides wind energy, this microgrid system is operated with assistance of a diesel generator. A three-layer energy management system (EMS) is designed and applied in this microgrid system, which is to realize microgrid islanded operation under different wind conditions. Simulation results show that the EMS can ensure stable operation of the microgrid under varying wind speed situations

Self-tuning resonant control of a 7-leg back-to-back converter for interfacing variable speed generators to 4-wire loads

This paper considers the control of a 7-leg back-to-back Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) arrangement feeding a 4-wire load from a 3-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) operating at variable speed. The PMSG is controlled using a sensorless Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) to obtain the rotor position angle. The 7-leg converter is regulated using Resonant Controllers (RCs) at the load side and self-tuning resonant controllers at the generator side. The control system is augmented by a feed-forward compensation algorithm which improves the dynamic performance during transients. Experimental results, obtained from a prototype, are presented and discussed

Power Converter Topologies for Multiphase Drive Applications

The yet growing demand for higher demanding industrial applications and the global concern about harmful emissions in the atmosphere have increased the interest for new developments in electric machines and power converters. To meet these new requirements, multiphase machines have become a very attractive solution, offering potential advantages over three-phase classical solutions. Multiphase machine’s power demand can be split over more than three phases, thus reducing the electric field stress on each winding (protecting the insulation system) and the requirements on maximum power ratings, for semiconductor devices. Moreover, only two degrees of freedom (i.e. two independently controllable currents) are required for independent flux and torque control. Due to the previous facts, the use of multiphase drives has become very attractive for applications and developments in areas such as electric ship propulsion, more-electric aircraft, electric and hybrid electric road vehicles, electric locomotive traction and in renewable electric energy generation. As a consequence of this multiphase drive tendency, the development of power converter topologies, capable of dealing with high power ratings and handling multiphase winding distributions, has encourage the development of new converter topologies, control strategies and mathematical tools, to face this new challenge

This dissertation presents several model predictive control (MPC) techniques and finite-position-set observers (FPSOs) for permanent-magnet synchronous generators and doubly-fed induction generators in variable-speed wind turbines. The proposed FPSOs are novel ones and based on the concept of finite-control-set MPC. Then, the problems of the MPC techniques like sensitivity to variations of the model parameters and others are investigated and solved in this work.
