An objective examination of consumer perception of nutrition information based on healthiness ratings

    Get PDF
Objective. Previous research on nutrition labelling has mainly used subjective measures. This study examines the effectiveness of two types of nutrition label using two objective measures: eye movements and healthiness ratings. Design. Eye movements were recorded while participants made healthiness ratings for two types of nutrition label: standard and standard plus the Food Standards Agency’s ‘traffic light’ concept. Setting. University of Derby, UK. Subjects. 92 participants (mean age 31.5 years) were paid for their participation. None of the participants worked in the areas of food or nutrition. Results. For the standard nutrition label, participant eye movements lacked focus and their healthiness ratings lacked accuracy. The traffic light system helped to guide the attention of the consumer to the important nutrients and improved the accuracy of the healthiness ratings of nutrition labels. Conclusions. Consumer’s have a lack of knowledge regarding how to interpret nutrition information for standard labels. The traffic light concept helps to ameliorate this problem by indicating important nutrients to pay attention to

Multisensor Data Fusion Implementation for a Sensor Based Fertilizer Application System

"Mapping systems" (“mapping approach”), real-time sensor-actuator systems ("sensor approach") or the combination of both (“Real-time approach with map overlay”) determine the process control in mobile application systems for spatially variable fertilization. Within the integrated research project “Information Systems Precision Farming Duernast” (IKB Duernast) the implementation of the “Real-time approach with map overlay” was done for intensive nitrogen fertilization. The bottom line of this sophisticated approach is a comprehensive situation assessment, a typical multisensor data fusion task. Based on a functional and procedural modelling of the multisensor data fusion and decision making process, it could be pointed out that an expert system is an adequate fusion paradigm and algorithm. Therefore, a software simulation with an expert system as core element was implemented to fuse on-line sensor technology measurements (REIP), maps (yield, EM38, environmental constraints, draft force) and user inputs in order to derive an application set point in real-time. The development of an expert system can be viewed as a structured transformation in five levels from the “specification level”, the “task level”, the “problem solving level” and the “knowledge base level” to the “tool level”. In the “tool level” the hybrid expert system shell JESS (Java Expert System Shell) was selected for implementation due to the results of preceding levels. Knowledge acquisition was done within another IKB-subproject by the means of data mining. Typical and maximal times of 10 ms and 60 ms for one fusion cycle were measured running this application on a 32-bit processor hardware (Intel Pentium III Mobile, 1 GHz)

Rancang Bangun Aplikasi Pengambilan Berita Secara Otomatis Menggunakan Content Syndication Berbasis Xml Dengan Platform Microsoft .Net

Railway computation for infinite linear systems

The problem of solving an infinite system of linear equations finitely expressed is addressed. Modifications of the Gauss-Seidel method are presented, especially suitable for the implementation on SMP machines with a small number of processors. One of the proposed parallel algorithms, which concentrates the computational efforts where they are most neeeded, results to be more efficient than the sequential algorithm, even from the point of view of the total number of operations

Inspection of wood surface waviness defects using the light sectioning method

    Get PDF
Surface waviness variations are a major type of defect on planed wood products. A number of methods have been investigated for the inspection of waviness defects on wood surfaces. This paper describes a new implementation of the light sectioning method with the latest structured lighting and machine vision techniques for this purpose. As a reference, a laser profilometer is used. The data from the light sectioning method and from the profilometer are highly correlated

Wireless local area network in a prehospital environment

BACKGROUND: Wireless local area networks (WLANs) are considered the next generation of clinical data network. They open the possibility for capturing clinical data in a prehospital setting (e.g., a patient's home) using various devices, such as personal digital assistants, laptops, digital electrocardiogram (EKG) machines, and even cellular phones, and transmitting the captured data to a physician or hospital. The transmission rate is crucial to the applicability of the technology in the prehospital setting. METHODS: We created two separate WLANs to simulate a virtual local are network environment such as in a patient's home or an emergency room (ER). The effects of different methods of data transmission, number of clients, and roaming among different access points on the file transfer rate were determined. RESULTS: The present results suggest that it is feasible to transfer small files such as patient demographics and EKG data from the patient's home to the ER at a reasonable speed. Encryption, user control, and access control were implemented and results discussed. CONCLUSIONS: Implementing a WLAN in a centrally managed and multiple-layer-controlled access control server is the key to ensuring its security and accessibility. Future studies should focus on product capacity, speed, compatibility, interoperability, and security management
