Priming system 1 influences user acceptance
The study examines an alternative conceptualization of user acceptance, where acceptance is a function of two modes of thinking: one that is fast, intuitive, and automatic (known as System 1), and one that is slow, more deliberate, and voluntary (known as System 2). Such a conceptualization can accommodate cases of affect substitution, where users rely on System 1 only, without activating System 2. An experiment is conducted (N = 250) in which users are primed for System 1 or System 2. The headline contribution is that, in the context of an unattractive but potentially useful software application, users primed for System 1 show weaker intentions to download the application than those who are primed for System 2 (mean score 5.25 versus 6.30, on a scale of 1 to 7). The difficulty of reconciling this result with traditional frameworks illustrates the relevance of the dual processing model
Gone in Sixty Milliseconds: Trademark Law and Cognitive Science
Trademark dilution is a cause of action for interfering with the uniqueness of a trademark. For example, consumers would probably not think that Kodak soap was produced by the makers of Kodak cameras, but its presence in the market would diminish the uniqueness of the original Kodak mark. Trademark owners think dilution is harmful but have had difficulty explaining why. Many courts have therefore been reluctant to enforce dilution laws, even while legislatures have enacted more of them over the past half century. Courts and commentators have now begun to use psychological theories, drawing on associationist models of cognition, to explain how a trademark can be harmed by the existence of similar marks even when consumers can readily distinguish the marks from one another and thus are not confused.
Though the cognitive theory of dilution is internally consistent and appeals to the authority of science, it does not rest on sufficient empirical evidence to justify its adoption. Moreover, the harms it identifies do not generally come from commercial competitors but from free speech about trademarked products. As a result, even a limited dilution law should be held unconstitutional under current First Amendment commercial-speech doctrine. In the absence of constitutional invalidation, the cognitive explanation of dilution is likely to change the law for the worse. Rather than working like fingerprint evidence--which ideally produces more evidence about already-defined crimes--psychological explanations of dilution are more like economic theories in antitrust, which changed the definition of actionable restraints of trade. Processing of regular and irregular past tense morphology in highly proficient second language learners of English: a self-paced reading study
Dual-system models suggest that English past tense morphology involves two processing routes: rule application for regular verbs and memory retrieval for irregular verbs (Pinker, 1999). In second language (L2) processing research, Ullman (2001a) suggested that both verb types are retrieved from memory, but more recently Clahsen and Felser (2006) and Ullman (2004) argued that past tense rule application can be automatised with experience by L2 learners. To address this controversy, we tested highly proficient Greek-English learners with naturalistic or classroom L2 exposure compared to native English speakers in a self-paced reading task involving past tense forms embedded in plausible sentences. Our results suggest that, irrespective to the type of exposure, proficient L2 learners of extended L2 exposure apply rule-based processing
The Ouroboros Model
At the core of the Ouroboros Model lies a self-referential recursive process with alternating phases of data acquisition and evaluation. Memory entries are organized in schemata. Activation at a time of part of a schema biases the whole structure and, in particular, missing features, thus triggering expectations. An iterative recursive monitor process termed ‘consumption analysis’ is then checking how well such expectations fit with successive activations. A measure for the goodness of fit, “emotion”, provides feedback as (self-) monitoring signal. Contradictions between anticipations based on previous experience and actual current data are highlighted as well as minor gaps and deficits. The basic algorithm can be applied to goal directed movements as well as to abstract rational reasoning when weighing evidence for and against some remote theories. A sketch is provided how the Ouroboros Model can shed light on rather different characteristics of human behavior including learning and meta-learning. Smart Conversational Agents for Reminiscence
In this paper we describe the requirements and early system design for a
smart conversational agent that can assist older adults in the reminiscence
process. The practice of reminiscence has well documented benefits for the
mental, social and emotional well-being of older adults. However, the
technology support, valuable in many different ways, is still limited in terms
of need of co-located human presence, data collection capabilities, and ability
to support sustained engagement, thus missing key opportunities to improve care
practices, facilitate social interactions, and bring the reminiscence practice
closer to those with less opportunities to engage in co-located sessions with a
(trained) companion. We discuss conversational agents and cognitive services as
the platform for building the next generation of reminiscence applications, and
introduce the concept application of a smart reminiscence agent
Self-reported use and perception of the L1 and L2 among maximally proficient bi- and multilinguals: a quantitative and qualitative investigation
This study investigates language preferences and perceptions in the use of the
native language (L1) and second language (L2) by 386 bi- and multilingual
adults. Participants declared that they were maximally proficient in L1 and L2
and used both constantly. A quantitative analysis revealed that despite their
maximal proficiency in the L1 and L2, participants preferred to use the L1 for
communicating feelings or anger, swearing, addressing their children, performing
mental calculations, and using inner speech. They also perceived their
L1 to be emotionally stronger than their L2 and reported lower levels of communicative
anxiety in their L1. An analysis of interview data from 20 participants
confirmed these findings while adding nuance. Indeed, differences in the
use of the L1 and L2 and perceptions of both are often subtle and context-specific.
Participants confirmed the finding that the L1 is usually felt to be more
powerful than the L2, but this did not automatically translate into a preference
for the L1. Longer stretches of time in the L2 culture are linked to a gradual
shift in linguistic practices and perceptions. Participants reported that their
multilingualism and multiculturalism gave them a sense of empowerment and
a feeling of freedom
Nudging folks towards stronger password choices:providing certainty is the key
Persuading people to choose strong passwords is challenging. One way to influence password strength, as and when people are making the choice, is to tweak the choice architecture to encourage stronger choice. A variety of choice architecture manipulations i.e. “nudges”, have been trialled by researchers with a view to strengthening the overall password profile. None has made much of a difference so far. Here we report on our design of an influential behavioural intervention tailored to the password choice context: a hybrid nudge that significantly prompted stronger passwords.We carried out three longitudinal studies to analyse the efficacy of a range of “nudges” by manipulating the password choice architecture of an actual university web application. The first and second studies tested the efficacy of several simple visual framing “nudges”. Password strength did not budge. The third study tested expiration dates directly linked to password strength. This manipulation delivered a positive result: significantly longer and stronger passwords. Our main conclusion was that the final successful nudge provided participants with absolute certainty as to the benefit of a stronger password, and that it was this certainty that made the difference
