Los lenguajes controlados y la documentación técnica : mejorando la traducibilidad

Los lenguajes controlados pueden suponer una estrategia efectiva para mejorar los procesos de traducción, modificando el texto origen para que se adapte a una serie de reglas que mejoran su traducibilidad. El artículo analiza el concepto de lenguaje controlado y revisa las diferentes áreas de control y su tipología, para después realizar un breve repaso al origen y evolución de estos si stemas lingüísticos. A continuación explora qué papel representan los lenguajes controlados en el proceso de redacción y traducción de documentación técnica. Por último, se centra en la relación entre lenguajes controlados y traducción y, más en concreto, la traducción automática, haciendo especial hincapié en las reglas más efectivas para la mejora de la traducibilidad.Els llenguatges controlats poden suposar una estratègia efectiva per a millorar els processos de traducció, modificant el text origen perquè s'adapte a una sèrie de regles que milloren la seua traduïbilitat. L'article analitza el concepte de llenguatge controlat i revisa les diferents àrees de control i la seua tipologia, per a després realitzar un breu repàs a l'origen i evolució d'estos sistemes lingüístics. Further, it reviews the origin and evolution of these linguistic systems and explores the role controlled languages play in the process of writing and translating technical documentation. Finally, it focuses on the relationship between controlled language and translation and, more specifically, machine translation, with particular emphasis on the rules aimed at improving translatability

OVERVIEW OF NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING AND MACHINE TRANSLATION METHODS

U radu je dan pregled područja povezanog s procesiranjem prirodnih jezika i njihova međusobnog odnosa, počevši od šire domene kao što je umjetna inteligencija, putem strojnog učenja, računalne lingvistike, metoda strojnog prevođenja te posebice onih zasnovanim na dubokom učenju. Opisane su karakteristike, primjene, faze i glavni problemi obrade prirodnih jezika s leksičke, sintaktičke, semantičke, govorne i pragmatičke perspektive. Opisane su faze prepoznavanja i analize prirodnog jezika kao i faza generiranja prirodnih jezika. Postupci pre-editinga i post-editinga uz korištenje kontroliranih prirodnih jezika dani su kao primjeri prakse kojom se povećava točnost i kvaliteta automatskog prevođenja i općenito procesiranja teksta. Poseban je fokus stavljen na strojno prevođenje te metode strojnog prevođenja. Pristupi strojnom prevođenju kao statistički, temeljen na pravilima, hibridni i pristup temeljen na dubokom učenju opisani su i predstavljeni s obzirom na njihove prednosti i nedostatke i prikladnu primjenu u praksi. Na kraju su dani još uvijek neriješeni izazovi kao smjer daljnjih istraživanja vezanih uz obradu prirodnih jezika te značaj razvoja pristupa temeljenog na dubokom učenju.The paper provides an overview of areas related to the processing of natural languages and their interrelationships, starting from a broader domain such as artificial intelligence, through machine learning, computational linguistics, machine translation methods and especially those based on deep learning. The characteristics, applications, phases and main problems of natural language processing from the lexical, syntactic, semantic, speech and pragmatic perspective are described. The phases of natural language recognition and analysis as well as the natural language generation phase are described. Pre-editing and post-editing procedures using controlled natural languages are given as examples of practices that increase the accuracy and quality of automatic translation and text processing in general. Special focus is given to machine translation and machine translation methods. Approaches to machine translation as statistical, rule-based, example-based, hybrid and deep learning-based approach are described and discussed with regard to their advantages and disadvantages including appropriate application in practice. In the end, still unresolved challenges are given as a direction of future research related to natural language processing and the importance of further development of a deep learning-based approach

Upgrading Usability and Utility Features for Shaping Post-Edition Tools

Technological advances have led to the development of ever more comprehensive translation and post-edition support tools focusing on facilitating the human’s task and improving the users’ experience when interacting with machines. This article seeks to specify the most needed functionalities to create a comprehensive assisted post-edition tool by selecting some of the existing functions highlighted as useful by experts working with computer assisted and machine translation tools. Furthermore, an analysis of the most relevant aspects of human-computer interaction and interface design will follow, focused on enhancing user experience and improving post-edition tools usability. The aim of this study is to prioritize the quality and speed of the post-edition process by improving humans’ working conditions of this emerging professional profile.El desarrollo de las tecnologías ha posibilitado la creación de herramientas de apoyo a la postedición cada vez más completas a nivel técnico, centradas en facilitar la tarea al humano y mejorar la experiencia de los usuarios. Con el fin de definir las funcionalidades necesarias en una herramienta de postedición asistida, se han seleccionado ciertas características funcionales ya existentes en herramientas de traducción asistida por ordenador y motores de traducción automática que los expertos consideran útiles para poseditar. Asimismo, se analizan los resultados de interacción persona-ordenador y de diseño de interfaces orientadas a mejorar la experiencia del usuario para aplicarlos al desarrollo de herramientas de postedición usables. Con dicho análisis, se pretende ganar calidad y rapidez en el proceso de postedición y enriquecer las condiciones de trabajo de este perfil profesional emergente

Post-editing machine translated text in a commercial setting: Observation and statistical analysis

Machine translation systems, when they are used in a commercial context for publishing purposes, are usually used in combination with human post-editing. Thus understanding human post-editing behaviour is crucial in order to maximise the benefit of machine translation systems. Though there have been a number of studies carried out on human post-editing to date, there is a lack of large-scale studies on post-editing in industrial contexts which focus on the activity in real-life settings. This study observes professional Japanese post-editors’ work and examines the effect of the amount of editing made during post-editing, source text characteristics, and post-editing behaviour, on the amount of post-editing effort. A mixed method approach was employed to both quantitatively and qualitatively analyse the data and gain detailed insights into the post-editing activity from various view points. The results indicate that a number of factors, such as sentence structure, document component types, use of product specific terms, and post-editing patterns and behaviour, have effect on the amount of post-editing effort in an intertwined manner. The findings will contribute to a better utilisation of machine translation systems in the industry as well as the development of the skills and strategies of post-editors
