    A gentle transition from Java programming to Web Services using XML-RPC

    Exposing students to leading edge vocational areas of relevance such as Web Services can be difficult. We show a lightweight approach by embedding a key component of Web Services within a Level 3 BSc module in Distributed Computing. We present a ready to use collection of lecture slides and student activities based on XML-RPC. In addition we show that this material addresses the central topics in the context of web services as identified by Draganova (2003)

    Several candidate Data Base Management Systems (DBM's) that could support the NASA End-to-End Data System's Integrated Data Base Management System (IDBMS) Project, later rescoped and renamed the Packet Management System (PMS) were evaluated. The candidate DBMS systems which had to run on the Digital Equipment Corporation VAX 11/780 computer system were ORACLE, SEED and RIM. Oracle and RIM are both based on the relational data base model while SEED employs a CODASYL network approach. A single data base application which managed stratospheric temperature profiles was studied. The primary reasons for using this application were an insufficient volume of available PMS-like data, a mandate to use actual rather than simulated data, and the abundance of available temperature profile data

    Maintaining cognitive ability in the elderly is a global priority. Computerised cognitive training (CCT) is among the few effective interventions but the boundaries and mechanisms underlying its effectiveness are largely unknown. Chapter 2 is the first systematic review and meta-analysis of 37 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of CCT in healthy elderly, encompassing a total of 4,310 participants. CCT was effective on all the cognitive domains except for executive functions. Type of training program, mode of delivery, session length and training frequency were found to moderate CCT efficacy. The Timecourse Trial (Chapter 3) was a randomized, double-blind, active controlled longitudinal trial of CCT in 80 healthy elderly. Significant effects were found on global cognition, memory and processing speed, and dose-response curves differed across domains. These domain-specific gains also followed different decay curves after training cessation throughout the 12 months follow-up period. Chapter 4 investigates the neural underpinnings of gains in global cognition. Modification of resting-state functional connectivity was found to predict subsequent cognitive gains, gains that were also correlated to structural cortical plasticity. CCT is an effective intervention in the elderly. The field may do well to now focus on improving standards, large-scale trials and a further understanding of biological mechanisms

    The hardware implementation of an artificial neural network using stochastic pulse rate encoding principles

    In this thesis the development of a hardware artificial neuron device and artificial neural network using stochastic pulse rate encoding principles is considered. After a review of neural network architectures and algorithmic approaches suitable for hardware implementation, a critical review of hardware techniques which have been considered in analogue and digital systems is presented. New results are presented demonstrating the potential of two learning schemes which adapt by the use of a single reinforcement signal. The techniques for computation using stochastic pulse rate encoding are presented and extended with new novel circuits relevant to the hardware implementation of an artificial neural network. The generation of random numbers is the key to the encoding of data into the stochastic pulse rate domain. The formation of random numbers and multiple random bit sequences from a single PRBS generator have been investigated. Two techniques, Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithms, have been applied successfully to the problem of optimising the configuration of a PRBS random number generator for the formation of multiple random bit sequences and hence random numbers. A complete hardware design for an artificial neuron using stochastic pulse rate encoded signals has been described, designed, simulated, fabricated and tested before configuration of the device into a network to perform simple test problems. The implementation has shown that the processing elements of the artificial neuron are small and simple, but that there can be a significant overhead for the encoding of information into the stochastic pulse rate domain. The stochastic artificial neuron has the capability of on-line weight adaption. The implementation of reinforcement schemes using the stochastic neuron as a basic element are discussed

    The Mars Rover Laser Scanning system uses a precision laser pointing mechanism, a photodetector array, and the concept of triangulation to perform three dimensional scene analysis. The system is used for real time terrain sensing and vision. The Multi-Laser/Multi-Detector laser scanning system is controlled by a digital device called the ML/MD controller. A next generation laser scanning system, based on the Level 2 controller, is microprocessor based. The new controller capabilities far exceed those of the ML/MD device.
