Reproducible Econometric Research. A Critical Review of the State of the Art.
Recent software developments are reviewed from the vantage point of reproducible econometric research. We argue that the emergence of new tools, particularly in the open-source community, have greatly eased the burden of documenting and archiving both empirical and simulation work in econometrics. Building-in quality rather than assessing quality afterwards: a technological solution to ensuring computational accuracy in learning materials
[Abstract]: Quality encompasses a very broad range of ideas in learning
materials, yet the accuracy of the content is often overlooked
as a measure of quality. Various aspects of accuracy are briefly
considered, and the issue of computational accuracy is then
considered further. When learning materials are produced
containing the results of mathematical computations, accuracy
is essential: but how can the results of these computations
be known to be correct? A solution is to embed the instructions
for performing the calculations in the materials, and let
the computer calculate the result and place it in the text. In
this way, quality is built into the learning materials by design,
not evaluated after the event. This is all accomplished using
the ideas of literate programming, applied to the learning materials
context. A small example demonstrates how remarkably
easy the ideas are to apply in practice using the appropriate
technology. Given that the technology is available and
is easy to use, it would appear imperative that the approach
discussed is adopted to improve quality in learning materials
containing computational results
Digital libraries for creative communities
Digital library technologies have a great deal to offer to creative, design communities. They can enable large collections of text, images, music, video and other information objects to be organised and accessed in interesting and diverse ways. Ordinary people—people not traditionally viewed as 'creators' or 'designers'—can now conceive, assemble, build, and disseminate new information collections. This paper explores the development rationale behind the Greenstone digital library technology. We also examine three examples of creative new techniques for accessing and presenting information in digital libraries and stress the importance of tailoring information access to support the requirements of the users and application area

Design Exposition with Literate Visualization
We propose a new approach to the visualization design and communication process, literate visualization, based upon and extending, Donald Knuth’s idea of literate programming. It integrates the process of writing data visualization code with description of the design choices that led to the implementation (design exposition). We develop a model of design exposition characterised by four visualization designer architypes: the evaluator, the autonomist, the didacticist and the rationalist. The model is used to justify the key characteristics of literate visualization: ‘notebook’ documents that integrate live coding input, rendered output and textual narrative; low cost of authoring textual narrative; guidelines to encourage structured visualization design and its documentation. We propose narrative schemas for structuring and validating a wide range of visualization design approaches and models, and branching narratives for capturing alternative designs and design views. We describe a new open source literate visualization environment, litvis, based on a declarative interface to Vega and Vega-Lite through the functional programming language Elm combined with markdown for formatted narrative. We informally assess the approach, its implementation and potential by considering three examples spanning a range of design abstractions: new visualization idioms; validation though visualization algebra; and feminist data visualization. We argue that the rich documentation of the design process provided by literate visualization offers the potential to improve the validity of visualization design and so benefit both academic visualization and visualization practice
Taxonomy of Literacies
Purpose: Digital technologies have transformed what it means to be literate and to experience literacy. Various literacies have been coined to capture this transformation including established literacies like computer literacy, information literacy, digital literacy, media literacy and Internet literacy, to newer conceptions like transliteracy, metaliteracy and multimodal literacy. Assimilating the various conceptions of literacy and literacy types is becoming increasingly more complex. There is a need for a taxonomy of literacies that reflects more recent developments, one that more comprehensively captures the current literacy landscape and one that might have affordances in the future. Approach ‘Library and Information Science Abstracts’ (LISA), ‘Education Resources Information Center’ (ERIC) and ‘British Education Index’ were searched for documents relating to digital technologies and literacy. Relevant documents were retrieved and reviewed. This was followed by selective backward and forward citation searching and a further review of relevant documents. Findings Based on a review of the literature, two significant dimensions of literacy were identified. These dimensions were used to create a literacy framework to enable the classification of literacies and literacy types i.e. a taxonomy of literacies. This taxonomy was successfully applied to various prominent literacies and literacy types. Research limitations The literacy framework was only applied to those literacies and literacy types that are directly or indirectly related to digital technologies. Originality and value There have been a few attempts to classify some literacy types. When conceived, these classifications comprehensively captured some aspect of the literacy landscape. However, they are now dated and there is a need for a taxonomy of literacies that meets the needs identified above. This paper proposes a taxonomy that meets these criteria. In the soft-to-hard technical spectrum: Where is software engineering?
In the computer journals and tabloids, there have been a plethora of articles written about the software engineering field. But while advocates of the need for an engineering approach to software development, it is impressive how many authors have treated the subject of software engineering without adequately addressing the fundamentals of what engineering as a discipline consists of. A discussion is presented of the various related facets of this issue in a logical framework to advance the thesis that the software development process is necessarily an engineering process. The purpose is to examine more of the details of the issue of whether or not the design and development of software for digital computer processing systems should be both viewed and treated as a legitimate field of professional engineering. Also, the type of academic and professional level education programs that would be required to support a software engineering discipline is examined
