    Interaction features for prediction of perceptual segmentation:Effects of musicianship and experimental task

    As music unfolds in time, structure is recognised and understood by listeners, regardless of their level of musical expertise. A number of studies have found spectral and tonal changes to quite successfully model boundaries between structural sections. However, the effects of musical expertise and experimental task on computational modelling of structure are not yet well understood. These issues need to be addressed to better understand how listeners perceive the structure of music and to improve automatic segmentation algorithms. In this study, computational prediction of segmentation by listeners was investigated for six musical stimuli via a real-time task and an annotation (non real-time) task. The proposed approach involved computation of novelty curve interaction features and a prediction model of perceptual segmentation boundary density. We found that, compared to non-musicians’, musicians’ segmentation yielded lower prediction rates, and involved more features for prediction, particularly more interaction features; also non-musicians required a larger time shift for optimal segmentation modelling. Prediction of the annotation task exhibited higher rates, and involved more musical features than for the real-time task; in addition, the real-time task required time shifting of the segmentation data for its optimal modelling. We also found that annotation task models that were weighted according to boundary strength ratings exhibited improvements in segmentation prediction rates and involved more interaction features. In sum, musical training and experimental task seem to have an impact on prediction rates and on musical features involved in novelty-based segmentation models. Musical training is associated with higher presence of schematic knowledge, attention to more dimensions of musical change and more levels of the structural hierarchy, and higher speed of musical structure processing. Real-time segmentation is linked with higher response delays, less levels of structural hierarchy attended and higher data noisiness than annotation segmentation. In addition, boundary strength weighting of density was associated with more emphasis given to stark musical changes and to clearer representation of a hierarchy involving high-dimensional musical changes.peerReviewe

    INTELLIGENT TECHNIQUES FOR HANDLING UNCERTAINTY IN THE ASSESSMENT OF NEONATAL OUTCOME

    Objective assessment of the neonatal outcome of labour is important, but it is a difficult and challenging problem. It is an invaluable source of information which can be used to provide feedback to clinicians, to audit a unit's overall performance, and can guide subsequent neonatal care. Current methods are inadequate as they fail to distinguish damage that occurred during labour from damage that occurred before or after labour. Analysis of the chemical acid-base status of blood taken from the umbilical cord of an infant immediately after delivery provides information on any damage suffered by the infant due to lack of oxygen during labour. However, this process is complex and error prone, and requires expertise which is not always available on labour wards. A model of clinical expertise required for the accurate interpretation of umbilical acid-base status was developed, and encapsulated in a rule-based expert system. This expert system checks results to ensure their consistency, identifies whether the results come from arterial or venous vessels, and then produces an interpretation of their meaning. This 'crisp' expert system was validated, verified and commercially released, and has since been installed at twenty two hospitals all around the United Kingdom. The assessment of umbilical acid-base status is characterised by uncertainty in both the basic data and the knowledge required for its interpretation. Fuzzy logic provides a technique for representing both these forms of uncertainty in a single framework. A 'preliminary' fuzzy-logic based expert system to interpret error-free results was developed, based on the knowledge embedded in the crisp expert system. Its performance was compared against clinicians in a validation test, but initially its performance was found to be poor in comparison with the clinicians and inferior to the crisp expert system. An automatic tuning algorithm was developed to modify the behaviour of the fuzzy model utilised in the expert system. Sub-normal membership functions were used to weight terms in the fuzzy expert system in a novel manner. This resulted in an improvement in the performance of the fuzzy expert system to a level comparable to the clinicians, and superior to the crisp expert system. Experimental work was carried out to evaluate the imprecision in umbilical cord acid-base parameters. This information, in conjunction with fresh knowledge elicitation sessions, allowed the creation of a more comprehensive fuzzy expert system, to validate and interpret all acid-base data. This 'integrated' fuzzy expert system was tuned using the comparison data obtained previously, and incorporated vessel identification rules and interpretation rules, with numeric and linguistic outputs for each. The performance of each of the outputs was evaluated in a rigorous validation study. This demonstrated excellent agreement with the experts for the numeric outputs, and agreement on a par with the experts for the linguistic outputs. The numeric interpretation produced by the fuzzy expert system is a novel single dimensional measure that accurately represents the severity of acid-base results. The development of the crisp and fuzzy expert systems represents a major achievement and constitutes a significant contribution to the assessment of neonatal outcome.Plymouth Postgraduate Medical Schoo

    Decision support systems (DSS) have evolved over the past four decades from theoretical concepts into real world computerized applications. DSS architecture contains three key components: knowledge base, computerized model, and user interface. DSS simulate cognitive decision-making functions of humans based on artificial intelligence methodologies (including expert systems, data mining, machine learning, connectionism, logistical reasoning, etc.) in order to perform decision support functions. The applications of DSS cover many domains, ranging from aviation monitoring, transportation safety, clinical diagnosis, weather forecast, business management to internet search strategy. By combining knowledge bases with inference rules, DSS are able to provide suggestions to end users to improve decisions and outcomes. This book is written as a textbook so that it can be used in formal courses examining decision support systems. It may be used by both undergraduate and graduate students from diverse computer-related fields. It will also be of value to established professionals as a text for self-study or for reference

    Human inspired humanoid robots control architecture

    This PhD Thesis tries to present a different point of view when talking about the development of control architectures for humanoid robots. Specifically, this Thesis is focused on studying the human postural control system as well as on the use of this knowledge to develop a novel architecture for postural control in humanoid robots. The research carried on in this thesis shows that there are two types of components for postural control: a reactive one, and other predictive or anticipatory. This work has focused on the development of the second component through the implementation of a predictive system complementing the reactive one. The anticipative control system has been analysed in the human case and it has been extrapolated to the architecture for controlling the humanoid robot TEO. In this way, its different components have been developed based on how humans work without forgetting the tasks it has been designed for. This control system is based on the composition of sensorial perceptions, the evaluation of stimulus through the use of the psychophysics theory of the surprise, and the creation of events that can be used for activating some reaction strategies (synergies) The control system developed in this Thesis, as well as the human being does, processes information coming from different sensorial sources. It also composes the named perceptions, which depend on the type of task the postural control acts over. The value of those perceptions is obtained using bio-inspired evaluation techniques of sensorial inference. Once the sensorial input has been obtained, it is necessary to process it in order to foresee possible disturbances that may provoke an incorrect performance of a task. The system developed in this Thesis evaluates the sensorial information, previously transformed into perceptions, through the use of the “Surprise Theory”, and it generates some events called “surprises” used for predicting the evolution of a task. Finally, the anticipative system for postural control can compose, if necessary, the proper reactions through the use of predefined movement patterns called synergies. Those reactions can complement or substitute completely the normal performance of a task. The performance of the anticipative system for postural control as well as the performance of each one of its components have been tested through simulations and the application of the results in the humanoid robot TEO from the RoboticsLab research group in the Systems Engineering and Automation Department from the Carlos III University of Madrid. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Esta Tesis Doctoral pretende aportar un punto de vista diferente en el desarrollo de arquitecturas de control para robots humanoides. En concreto, esta Tesis se centra en el estudio del sistema de control postural humano y en la aplicación de este conocimiento en el desarrollo de una nueva arquitectura de control postural para robots humanoides. El estudio realizado en esta Tesis pone de manifiesto la existencia de una componente de control postural reactiva y otra predictiva o anticipativa. Este trabajo se ha centrado en el desarrollo de la segunda componente mediante la implementación de un sistema predictivo que complemente al sistema reactivo. El sistema de control anticipativo ha sido estudiado en el caso humano y extrapolado para la arquitectura de control del robot humanoide TEO. De este modo, sus diferentes componentes han sido desarrollados inspirándose en el funcionamiento humano y considerando las tareas para las que dicho robot ha sido concebido. Dicho sistema está basado en la composición de percepciones sensoriales, la evaluación de los estímulos mediante el uso de la teoría psicofísica de la sorpresa y la generación de eventos que sirvan para activar estrategias de reacción (sinergias). El sistema de control desarrollado en esta Tesis, al igual que el ser humano, procesa información de múltiples fuentes sensoriales y compone las denominadas percepciones, que dependen del tipo de tarea sobre la que actúa el control postural. El valor de estas percepciones es obtenido utilizando técnicas de evaluación bioinspiradas de inferencia sensorial. Una vez la entrada sensorial ha sido obtenida, es necesario procesarla para prever posibles perturbaciones que puedan ocasionar una incorrecta realización de una tarea. El sistema desarrollado en esta Tesis evalúa la información sensorial, previamente transformada en percepciones, mediante la ‘Teoría de la Sorpresa’ y genera eventos llamados ‘sorpresas’ que sirven para predecir la evolución de una tarea. Por último, el sistema anticipativo de control postural puede componer, si fuese necesario, las reacciones adecuadas mediante el uso de patrones de movimientos predefinidos llamados sinergias. Dichas reacciones pueden complementar o sustituir por completo la ejecución normal de una tarea. El funcionamiento del sistema anticipativo de control postural y de cada uno de sus componentes ha sido probado tanto por medio de simulaciones como por su aplicación en el robot humanoide TEO del grupo de investigación RoboticsLab en el Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas y Automática de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

    A finder and representation system for knowledge carriers based on granular computing

    In one of his publications Aristotle states ”All human beings by their nature desire to know” [Kraut 1991]. This desire is initiated the day we are born and accompanies us for the rest of our life. While at a young age our parents serve as one of the principle sources for knowledge, this changes over the course of time. Technological advances and particularly the introduction of the Internet, have given us new possibilities to share and access knowledge from almost anywhere at any given time. Being able to access and share large collections of written down knowledge is only one part of the equation. Just as important is the internalization of it, which in many cases can prove to be difficult to accomplish. Hence, being able to request assistance from someone who holds the necessary knowledge is of great importance, as it can positively stimulate the internalization procedure. However, digitalization does not only provide a larger pool of knowledge sources to choose from but also more people that can be potentially activated, in a bid to receive personalized assistance with a given problem statement or question. While this is beneficial, it imposes the issue that it is hard to keep track of who knows what. For this task so-called Expert Finder Systems have been introduced, which are designed to identify and suggest the most suited candidates to provide assistance. Throughout this Ph.D. thesis a novel type of Expert Finder System will be introduced that is capable of capturing the knowledge users within a community hold, from explicit and implicit data sources. This is accomplished with the use of granular computing, natural language processing and a set of metrics that have been introduced to measure and compare the suitability of candidates. Furthermore, are the knowledge requirements of a problem statement or question being assessed, in order to ensure that only the most suited candidates are being recommended to provide assistance
