Robot pain: a speculative review of its functions

    Get PDF
Given the scarce bibliography dealing explicitly with robot pain, this chapter has enriched its review with related research works about robot behaviours and capacities in which pain could play a role. It is shown that all such roles ¿ranging from punishment to intrinsic motivation and planning knowledge¿ can be formulated within the unified framework of reinforcement learning.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Get PDF
The design, construction, and testing of a complete system to produce karyotypes and chromosome measurement data from human blood samples, and a basis for statistical analysis of quantitative chromosome measurement data is described. The prototype was assembled, tested, and evaluated on clinical material and thoroughly documented

Brain Tumor Detection using MR Images through Pixel based Methodology

    Get PDF
Brain tumor a notorious disease has affected and devastated many lives This disease has been the centre of attention of thousands of researchers for many decades around the world Researchers have combined their knowledge and efforts from many areas ranging from medical to mathematical sciences to better understand the disease and to find more effective treatments The key objective of this paper is to form a methodology to detect extraction of brain tumor from a patient s MRI This method incorporates with some noise removal functions segmentation and morphological operations which are the basic concepts of image processing Proposed methodology will detect tumor and finally the fractional area of tumor will be calculated All of this processing will be done by MATLAB softwar

CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap

    Get PDF
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year. In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio- economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal challenges

Toward natural interaction in the real world: real-time gesture recognition

    Get PDF
Using a new hand tracking technology capable of tracking 3D hand postures in real-time, we developed a recognition system for continuous natural gestures. By natural gestures, we mean those encountered in spontaneous interaction, rather than a set of artificial gestures chosen to simplify recognition. To date we have achieved 95.6% accuracy on isolated gesture recognition, and 73% recognition rate on continuous gesture recognition, with data from 3 users and twelve gesture classes. We connected our gesture recognition system to Google Earth, enabling real time gestural control of a 3D map. We describe the challenges of signal accuracy and signal interpretation presented by working in a real-world environment, and detail how we overcame them.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (award IIS-1018055)Pfizer Inc.Foxconn Technolog
