Power Systems Monitoring and Control using Telecom Network Management Standards

    Get PDF
Historically, different solutions have been developed for power systems control and telecommunications network management environments. The former was characterized by proprietary solutions, while the latter has been involved for years in a strong standardization process guided by criteria of openness. Today, power systems control standardization is in progress, but it is at an early stage compared to the telecommunications management area, especially in terms of information modeling. Today, control equipment tends to exhibit more computational power, and communication lines have increased their performance. These trends hint at some conceptual convergence between power systems and telecommunications networks from a management perspective. This convergence leads us to suggest the application of well-established telecommunications management standards for power systems control. This paper shows that this is a real medium-to-long term possibility

An IDE for NETCONF management applications

The development of network and system management software typically requires data models definition, the creation of specific applications respecting the data model, and yet the implementation of communication interfaces. Skilled professionals usually perform such tasks in a predefined sequence and using different development solutions, but any error or lacks in the data model frequently force to repeat several time-consuming tasks. In this paper we present an integrated development framework that simplifies the construction of NETCONF management applications, from data model specification to deployment and evaluation. The framework is available at http://atnog.av.it.pt/∼ptavares/ yangplugin

IP Network Management Platforms Before the Web

In this paper, we analyze the characteristics and shortcomings of IP network management platforms before the arrival of Web technologies. In the first part, we give a brief history of IP network management, and summarize the limitations of traditional (i.e., pre-Web and SNMP-based) management platforms. We recall the initial objectives of open network management. We then explain how the early vision of generic management was changed by the industry`s natural inclination for market segmentation, and how the market of IP networks evolved from generic to vendor-specific equipment, management GUIs and MIBs. In the second part, we propose a simple model of traditional IP network management platforms, against which new Web-based management solutions can be compared. We introduce the three core functions of such platforms (network monitoring, data collection, and event handling), distinguish regular management from ad hoc management, and explain how SNMP`s polling model maps onto these functions

Modern computer networks are constantly increasing in size and complexity. Despite this, data networks are a critical factor for the success of many organizations. Monitoring their health and operation sta- tus is fundamental, and usually performed through specific network man- agement architectures, developed and standardized in the last decades. On the other hand, file systems have become one of the best well known paradigms of human-computer interaction, and have been around since early days in the personal computer industry. In this paper we propose a file system interface to network management information, allowing users to open, edit and visualize network and systems operation information

The objective of this Project was to publish management information from the karat platform in order to administrate karat servers using third party market tools, which support network or application management standards like the Simple Network Management Protocol or Java Management eXtensions. A Java Application was developed to achieve the objective and meet the requirements of the Project, using an iterative agile methodology and providing not one, but two standard management services for the whole platform. Karat servers can now be administered by most of the commercial network management systems of our days

In recent years, the now ubiquitous Ethernet protocol that lacks effective QoS management functions, has gained momentum in the field of industrial communication, by means of novel, Ethernet-based protocols (e.g. Profinet, Industrial Ethernet, etc.), which are able to provide deterministic communications. HaRTES – Hard Real-Time Ethernet Switch, aimed to develop an Ethernet switching infrastructure, able to provide timeliness guarantees, efficient bandwidth usage and support for operational flexibility as required by dynamic real-time distributed embedded systems. The project was built upon previous work on the FTT (Flexible Time-Triggered) communication paradigm to develop Ethernet switches with enhanced transmission control, traffic scheduling, and transparent integration of non-real-time nodes. NetConf is a recent network management technology that is replacing the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) – widely used and long adopted by industry standard. The biggest difference between NetConf and SNMP is that the former use a communication mechanism based on XML-RPC, which, thanks to the tools developed in the scope of other web technologies, allows a simpler and faster development and management cycle. The HaRTES project had not provided a management platform with a standardized interface for SNMP or NetConf protocols, enabling remote switch management. Thus the main objective of this work was to develop key components for the support of the standardized multiplatform management interfaces for the HaRTES switch and their performance assessment
