    Drainage management study of the city of Merauke towards inundation by rainfall

    One problem that is often faced by the City of Merauke as an urban area is inundation, which disrupts socio-economic activities and damages infrastructure in areas affected by inundation. The aim of this case study is to find ways to deal with inundation that occurs due to rainfall with return periods of 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, and 25 years. The inundation volume for the 2-year return period is zero, for the 5-year return period is 12.58 m3/sec with a height of 23.35 cm, for the 10-year return period is 18.57 m3/sec with a height of 25.63 cm, and for the 25-year return period is 20.22 m3/sec with a height of 27.75 cm. With the Microsoft Excel application, hydrological analysis was performed; spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) resulted in a map of the characteristics of the case study area, and with the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM), hydraulics analysis was performed on existing drainage channels along with simulated management

    Exceeding Regulatory Compliance in Procedure Management: A Journey towards Operational Excellence

    PresentationProving compliance to well defined and explicitly stated regulations regarding process safety sounds simple, however in practice it involves a huge effort. The sheer volume of information required to be compliant in highly regulated environments can be overwhelming. The large number of people involved compound the complexity, and legacy systems simply don’t cut it anymore. Here we will outline the use of a procedure life-cycle management tool used to improve an organizations ability to comply at a reduced effort and cost. The unique ability to automatically track documentation activities, as well asindividual procedure completions, step-by-step, and record all procedure use for simple and fast reporting is at the core of a recently completed compliance management initiative by a leading energy and petro chemical firm. Additional benefits of this approach to procedure management include improved operator efficiency, decreased human factor errors, facilitated continuous improvement, increased consistency of standard work, and reduced effort in authoring and content management will also be explored. Going beyond compliance, we will outline how leading content management practices and tools can position an organization to seamlessly adopted new technology as they are commercialized and introduced to the market. Highlights of this approach to procedure management have been empirically measured and include reduced volume of content (up to 40%), reduced procedure review cycle time (up to 25%), reduction in authoring and updating effort (up to 90%), and streamlined process safety management compliance

    Characterization of wash-off from urban impervious surfaces and SuDS design criteria for source control under semi-arid conditions

    [EN] Knowledge about pollutant wash-off from urban impervious surfaces is a key feature for developing effective management strategies. Accordingly, further information is required about urban areas under semi-arid climate conditions at the sub-catchment scale. This is important for designing source control systems for pollution. In this study, a characterization of pollutant wash-off has been performed over sixteen months, at the sub-catchment scale for urban roads as impervious surfaces. The study was conducted in Valencia, Spain, a city with a Mediterranean climate. The results show high event mean concentrations for suspended solids (98 mg/l), organic matter (142 mgCOD/l, 25 mg BOD5/l), nutrients (3.7mgTN/l, 0.4 mg TP/l), and metals (0.23, 0.32, 0.62 and 0.17 mg/l for Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn, respectively). The results of the runoff characterization highlight the need to control this pollution at its source, separately from wastewater because of their different characteristics. The wash-off, defined in terms of mobilized mass (g/m(2)) fits well with both process-based and statistical models, with the runoff volume and rainfall depth being the main explanatory variables. Based on these results and using information collected from hydrographs and pollutographs, an approach for sizing sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS), focusing on water quality and quantity variables, has been proposed. By setting a concentration-based target (TSS discharged to receiving waters < 35 mg/l), the results indicate that for a SuDS type detention basin (DB), an off-line configuration performs better than an on-line configuration. The resulting design criterion, expressed as SuDS volume per unit catchment area, assuming a DB type SuDS, varies between 7 and 10 l/m(2).This research was funded through the SUPRIS-SUReS projects (Ref.     The National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) has archived over 6 terabytes of space and Earth science data accumulated over nearly 25 years. It now expects these holdings to nearly double every two years. The science user community needs rapid access to this archival data and information about data. The NSSDC has been set on course to provide just that. Five years ago the NSSDC came on line, becoming easily reachable for thousands of scientists around the world through electronic networks it managed and other international electronic networks to which it connected. Since that time, the data center has developed and implemented over 15 interactive systems, operational nearly 24 hours per day, and is reachable through DECnet, TCP/IP, X25, and BITnet communication protocols. The NSSDC is a clearinghouse for the science user to find data needed through the Master Directory system whether it is at the NSSDC or deposited in over 50 other archives and data management facilities around the world. Over 13,000 users accessed the NSSDC electronic systems, during the past year. Thousands of requests for data have been satisfied, resulting in the NSSDC's sending out a volume of data last year that nearly exceeded a quarter of its holdings. This document reports on some of the highlights and distribution statistics for most of the basic NSSDC operational services for fiscal year 1990. It is intended to be the first of a series of annual reports on how well NSSDC is doing in supporting the space and Earth science user communities

    The article presents the results of pilot studies carried out in the cities of Łódź Metropolitan Area. The study concerned the use of geographical information system by the employees of offices of these cities. The interest in the subject of GIS in Polish urban communes results from the assumptions of the EU INSPIRE Directive and the necessity of its implementation in the basic units of territorial division of Poland. The aim of the research was the analysis of the impact of GIS on the sphere of the public participation in the process of local management and the possible use of GIS in the decision making in communes. With support from The New York Community Trust, the Crime Commission has undertaken an analysis of youth gun violence and crew activity -- violent turf rivalries among less-organized, smaller and normally younger groups than traditional gangs -- in select New York City communities.
