    Adaptive two-pass rank order filter to remove impulse noise in highly corrupted images

When the noise ratio is high, rank order filters, such as the median filter for example, can produce unsatisfactory results. Better results can be obtained by applying the filter twice, which we call two-pass filtering. To further improve the performance, we develop an adaptive two-pass rank order filter. Between the passes of filtering, an adaptive process is used to detect irregularities in the spatial distribution of the estimated impulse noise. The adaptive process then selectively replaces some pixels changed by the first pass of filtering with their original observed pixel values. These pixels are then kept unchanged during the second filtering. In combination, the adaptive process and the sec ond filter eliminate more impulse noise and restore some pixels that are mistakenly altered by the first filtering. As a final result, the reconstructed image maintains a higher degree of fidelity and has a smaller amount of noise. The idea of adaptive two-pass processing can be applied to many rank order filters, such as a center-weighted median filter (CWMF), adaptive CWMF, lower-upper-middle filter, and soft-decision rank-order-mean filter.     Systematic approach to nonlinear filtering associated with aggregation operators. Part 2. Frechet MIMO-filters

    Median filtering has been widely used in scalar-valued image processing as an edge preserving operation. The basic idea is that the pixel value is replaced by the median of the pixels contained in a window around it. In this work, this idea is extended onto vector-valued images. It is based on the fact that the median is also the value that minimizes the sum of distances between all grey-level pixels in the window. The Frechet median of a discrete set of vector-valued pixels in a metric space with a metric is the point minimizing the sum of metric distances to the all sample pixels. In this paper, we extend the notion of the Frechet median to the general Frechet median, which minimizes the Frechet cost function (FCF) in the form of aggregation function of metric distances, instead of the ordinary sum. Moreover, we propose use an aggregation distance instead of classical metric distance. We use generalized Frechet median for constructing new nonlinear Frechet MIMO-filters for multispectral image processing. (C) 2017 The Authors.     Distance Measures for Reduced Ordering Based Vector Filters

    Reduced ordering based vector filters have proved successful in removing long-tailed noise from color images while preserving edges and fine image details. These filters commonly utilize variants of the Minkowski distance to order the color vectors with the aim of distinguishing between noisy and noise-free vectors. In this paper, we review various alternative distance measures and evaluate their performance on a large and diverse set of images using several effectiveness and efficiency criteria. The results demonstrate that there are in fact strong alternatives to the popular Minkowski metrics

    Machine Learning And Image Processing For Noise Removal And Robust Edge Detection In The Presence Of Mixed Noise

    The central goal of this dissertation is to design and model a smoothing filter based on the random single and mixed noise distribution that would attenuate the effect of noise while preserving edge details. Only then could robust, integrated and resilient edge detection methods be deployed to overcome the ubiquitous presence of random noise in images. Random noise effects are modeled as those that could emanate from impulse noise, Gaussian noise and speckle noise. In the first step, evaluation of methods is performed based on an exhaustive review on the different types of denoising methods which focus on impulse noise, Gaussian noise and their related denoising filters. These include spatial filters (linear, non-linear and a combination of them), transform domain filters, neural network-based filters, numerical-based filters, fuzzy based filters, morphological filters, statistical filters, and supervised learning-based filters. In the second step, switching adaptive median and fixed weighted mean filter (SAMFWMF) which is a combination of linear and non-linear filters, is introduced in order to detect and remove impulse noise. Then, a robust edge detection method is applied which relies on an integrated process including non-maximum suppression, maximum sequence, thresholding and morphological operations. The results are obtained on MRI and natural images. In the third step, a combination of transform domain-based filter which is a combination of dual tree – complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) and total variation, is introduced in order to detect and remove Gaussian noise as well as mixed Gaussian and Speckle noise. Then, a robust edge detection is applied in order to track the true edges. The results are obtained on medical ultrasound and natural images. In the fourth step, a smoothing filter, which is a feed-forward convolutional network (CNN) is introduced to assume a deep architecture, and supported through a specific learning algorithm, l2 loss function minimization, a regularization method, and batch normalization all integrated in order to detect and remove impulse noise as well as mixed impulse and Gaussian noise. Then, a robust edge detection is applied in order to track the true edges. The results are obtained on natural images for both specific and non-specific noise-level

    An Efficient Approach of Removing the High Density Salt

    Images are often corrupted by impulse noise, also known as salt and pepper noise. Salt and pepper noise can corrupt the images where the corrupted pixel takes either maximum or minimum gray level. Amongst these standard median filter has been established as reliable - method to remove the salt and pepper noise without harming the edge details. However, the major problem of standard Median Filter (MF) is that the filter is effective only at low noise densities. When the noise level is over 50% the edge details of the original image will not be preserved by standard median filter. Adaptive Median Filter (AMF) performs well at low noise densities. In our proposed method, first we apply the Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT) for noise added image. It will separate into four bands like LL, LH, HL and HH. Further, we calculate the window size 3x3 for LL band image by Reading the pixels from the window, computing the minimum, maximum and median values from inside the window. Then we find out the noise and noise free pixels inside the window by applying our algorithm which replaces the noise pixels. The higher bands are smoothing by soft thresholding method. Then all the coefficients are decomposed by inverse stationary wavelet transform. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested for various levels of noise corruption and compared with standard filters namely standard median filter (SMF), weighted median filter (WMF). Our proposed method performs well in removing low to medium density impulse noise with detail preservation up to a noise density of 70% and it gives better Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Mean square error (MSE) values

    REMOVAL OF GAUSSIAN AND IMPULSE NOISE IN THE COLOUR IMAGE PROGRESSION WITH FUZZY FILTERS

    This paper is concerned with algebraic features based filtering technique, named as the adaptive statistical quality based filtering technique (ASQFT), is presented for removal of Impulse and Gaussian noise in corrupted colour images. A combination of these two filters also helps in eliminating a mixture of these two noises. One strong filtering step that should remove all noise at once would inevitably also remove a considerable amount of detail. Therefore, the noise is filtered step by step. In each step, noisy pixels are detected by the help of fuzzy rules, which are very useful for the processing of human knowledge where linguistic variables are used. The proposed filter is able to efficiently suppress both Gaussian noise and impulse noise, as well as mixed Gaussian impulse noise. The experiments shows that proposed method outperforms novel modern filters both visually and in terms of objective quality measures such as the mean absolute error (MAE), the peaksignal- to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the normalized color difference (NCD).
