    The Semantic Shadow : Combining User Interaction with Context Information for Semantic Web-Site Annotation

    This thesis develops the concept of the Semantic Shadow (SemS), a model for managing contentual and structural annotations on web page elements and their values. The model supports a contextual weighting of the annotated information, allowing to specify the annotation values in relation to the evaluation context. A procedure is presented, which allows to manage and process this context-dependent meta information on web page elements using a dedicated programming interface. Two distinct implementations for the model have been developed: One based on Java objects, the other using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) as modeling backend. This RDF-based storage allows to integrate the annotations of the Semantic Shadow with other information of the Semantic Web. To demonstrate the application of the Semantic Shadow concept, a procedure to optimize web based user interfaces based on the structural semantics has been developed: Assuming a mobile client, a requested web page is dynamically adapted by a proxy prototype, where the context-awareness of the adaptation can be directly modeled alongside with the structural annotations. To overcome the drawback of missing annotations for existing web pages, this thesis introduces a concept to derive context-dependent meta-information on the web pages from their usage: From the observation of the users' interaction with a web page, certain context-dependent structural information about the concerned web page elements can be derived and stored in the annotation model of the Semantic Shadow concept.In dieser Arbeit wird das Konzept des Semantic Shadow (dt. Semantischer Schatten) entwickelt, ein Programmier-Modell um Webseiten-Elemente mit inhaltsbezogenen und strukturellen Anmerkungen zu versehen. Das Modell unterstützt dabei eine kontextabhängige Gewichtung der Anmerkungen, so dass eine Anmerkung in Bezug zum Auswertungs-Kontext gesetzt werden kann. Zur Verwaltung und Verarbeitung dieser kontextbezogenen Meta-Informationen für Webseiten-Elemente wurde im Rahmen der Arbeit eine Programmierschnittstelle definiert. Dazu wurden zwei Implementierungen der Schnittstelle entwickelt: Eine basiert ausschließlich auf Java-Objekten, die andere baut auf einem RDF-Modell auf. Die RDF-basierte Persistierung erlaubt eine Integration der Semantic-Shadow-Anmerkungen mit anderen Anwendungen des Semantic Webs. Um die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten des Semantic-Shadow-Konzepts darzustellen, wurde eine Vorgehensweise zur Optimierung von webbasierten Benutzerschnittstellen auf Grundlage von semantischen Strukturinformationen entwickelt: Wenn ein mobiler Benutzer eine Webseite anfordert, wird diese dynamisch durch einen Proxy angepasst. Die Kontextabhängigkeit dieser Anpassung wird dabei bereits direkt mit den Struktur-Anmerkungen modelliert. Für bestehende Webseiten liegen zumeist keine Annotationen vor. Daher wird in dieser Arbeit ein Konzept vorgestellt, kontextabhängige Meta-Informationen aus der Benutzung der Webseiten zu bestimmen: Durch Beobachtung der Benutzer-Interaktionen mit den Webseiten-Elementen ist es möglich bestimmte kontextabhängige Strukturinformationen abzuleiten und als Anmerkungen im Modell des Semantic-Shadow-Konzepts zu persistieren

    A component framework for personalized multimedia applications

    Eine praktikable Unterstützung für eine dynamische Erstellung von personalisierten Multimedia-Präsentationen bieten bisher weder industrielle Lösungen noch Forschungsansätze. Mit dem Software-technischen Ansatz des MM4U-Frameworks („MultiMedia For You“) wird erstmals eine generische und zugleich praktikable Unterstützung für den dynamischen Erstellungsprozess bereitgestellt. Das Ziel des MM4U-Frameworks ist es den Anwendungsentwicklern eine umfangreiche und anwendungsunabhängige Unterstützung zur Erstellung von personalisierten Multimedia-Inhalten anzubieten und damit den Entwicklungsprozess solcher Anwendungen erheblich zu erleichtern. Um das Ziel eines Software-Frameworks zur generischen Unterstützung der Entwicklung von personalisierten Multimedia-Anwendungen zu erreichen, stellt sich die Frage nach einer geeigneten Software-technischen Unterstützung zur Entwicklung eines solchen Frameworks. Seit der Einführung von objektorientierten Frameworks, ist heute die Entwicklung immer noch aufwendig und schwierig. Um die Entwicklungsrisiken zu reduzieren, sind geeignete Vorgehensmodelle und Entwicklungsmethoden erstellt worden. Mit der Komponenten-Technologie sind auch so genannte Komponenten-Frameworks entstanden. Im Gegensatz zu objekt-orientierten Frameworks fehlt derzeit jedoch ein geeignetes Vorgehensmodell für Komponenten-Frameworks. Um den Entwicklungsprozess von Komponenten-Frameworks zu verbessern ist mit ProMoCF („Process Model for Component Frameworks“) ein neuartiger Ansatz entwickelt worden. Hierbei handelt es sich um ein leichtgewichtiges Vorgehensmodell und eine Entwicklungsmethodik für Komponenten-Frameworks. Das Vorgehensmodell wurde unter gegenseitigem Nutzen mit der Entwicklung des MM4U-Frameworks erstellt. Das MM4U-Framework stellt keine Neuerfindung der Adaption von Multimedia-Inhalten dar, sondern zielt auf die Vereinigung und Einbettung existierender Forschungsansätze und Lösungen im Umfeld der Multimedia-Personalisierung. Mit so einem Framework an der Hand können Anwendungsentwickler erstmals effizient und einfach eine dynamische Erstellung ihrer personalisierten Multimedia-Inhalte realisieren

    This book provides an approachable overview of the most recent advances in the fascinating field of media synchronization (mediasync), gathering contributions from the most representative and influential experts. Understanding the challenges of this field in the current multi-sensory, multi-device, and multi-protocol world is not an easy task.     A prediction-based dynamic content adaptation framework for enterprise documents applied to collaborative mobile web conferencing

    Enterprise documents, created in applications such as PowerPoint and Word, can be used and shared using ubiquitousWeb-enabled terminals connected to the Internet. In the context ofWeb conferencing, enterprise documents, particularly presentation slides, are hosted on the server and presented to the meeting participants synchronously. When mobile devices are involved in such meeting conferencing applications, the content (e.g.: presentation slides) should be adapted to meet the target mobile terminal constraints, but more importantly, to provide the end-user with the best experience possible. Globally, two major trends in content adaptation have been studied: static and dynamic. In static content adaptation, the content is adapted into a set of versions using different transcoding parameter combinations. At runtime, when the content is requested, the optimal of those versions, based on a given quality criterion, is selected for delivery. The performance of these solutions is based on the granularity in use; the number of created versions. In dynamic content adaptation, also called just-in-time adaptation, based on the mobile device context, a customized version is created on-the-fly, while the end-user is still waiting. Dynamically identifying the optimal transcoding parameters, without performing any transcoding operation, is very challenging. In this thesis, we propose a novel dynamic adaptation framework that estimates, without performing transcoding, near-optimal transcoding parameters (format, scaling parameter and quality factor). The output formats considered in this research are JPEG- and XHTML-based Web pages. Firstly, we define a quality of experience measure to quantify the quality of the adapted content as experienced by the end-user. This measure takes into account the visual aspect of the content as well as its transport quality, which is mostly affected by the network conditions. Secondly, we propose a dynamic adaptation framework capable of selecting dynamically and with very little computational complexity, near-optimal adapted content that meets the best compromise between its visual quality and delivery time based on the proposed quality of experience measure. It uses predictors of file size and visual quality of JPEG images subject to changing their scaling parameter and quality factor proposed in recent researches. Our framework is comprised of five adaptation methods with increased quality and complexity. The first one, requiring one transcoding operation, estimates near-optimal adapted content, whereas the other four methods improve its prediction accuracy by allowing the system to perform more than one transcoding operation. The performance of the proposed dynamic framework was tested with a static exhaustive system and a typical dynamic system. Globally, the obtained results were very close to optimality and far better than the typical dynamic system. Besides, we were able to reach optimality on a large number of tested documents. The proposed dynamic framework has been applied to OpenOffice Impress presentations. It is designed to be general, but future work can be carried out to validate its applicability to other enterprise documents types such as Word (text) and Excel (spreadsheet)

    Multimedia data capture with multicast dissemination for online distance learning

    Distance Learning Environments (DLEs) are elusive to define, difficult to successfully implement and costly due to their proprietary nature. With few open-source solutions, organizations are forced to invest large amounts of their resources in the procurement and support of proprietary products. Once an organization has chosen a particular solution, it becomes prohibitively expensive to choose another path later in the development process. The resolution to these challenges is realized in the use of open-standards, non-proprietary solutions. This thesis explores the multiple definitions of DLEs, defines metrics of successful implementation and develops open-source solutions for the delivery of multimedia in the Distance Learning Environment. Through the use of the Java Media Framework API, multiple tools are created to increase the transmission, capture and availability of multimedia content.
