    Bipedal Walking Analysis, Control, and Applications Towards Human-Like Behavior

    Realizing the essentials of bipedal walking balance is one of the core studies in both robotics and biomechanics. Although the recent developments of walking control on bipedal robots have brought the humanoid automation to a different level, the walking performance is still limited compared to human walking, which also restricts the related applications in biomechanics and rehabilitation. To mitigate the discrepancy between robotic walking and human walking, this dissertation is broken into three parts to develop the control methods to improve three important perspectives: predictive walking behavior, gait optimization, and stepping strategy. To improve the predictive walking behavior captured by the model predictive control (MPC) which is transitionally applied with the nonlinear tracking control in sequence, a quadratic program (QP)-based controller is proposed to unify center of mass (COM) planning using MPC and a nonlinear torque control with control Lyapunov function (CLF). For the gait optimization, we focus on the algorithms of trajectory optimization with direct collocation framework. We propose a robust trajectory optimization using step-time sampling for a simple walker under terrain uncertainties. Towards generating human-like walking gait with multi-domain (phases), we improve the optimization through contact with more accurate transcription method for level walking, and generalize the hybrid zero dynamics (HZD) gait optimization with modified contact conditions for walking on various terrains. The results are compared with human walking gaits, where the similar trends and the sources of discrepancies are identified. In the third part for stepping strategy, we perform step estimation based on capture point (CP) for different human movements, including single-step (balance) recovery, walking and walking with slip. The analysis provides the insights of the efficacy and limitation of CP-based step estimation for human gait

    Chapman & Huffman make use of observations and studies that show how humans may not be as unique in our behaviour and cognition as previously thought. I wholeheartedly agree that our uniqueness might be small and that if it exists, it should not give our species any right to act cruelly towards other animals.     Just as readers feel immersed when the story-line adheres to their experiences, users will more easily feel immersed in a virtual environment if the behavior of the characters in that environment adheres to their expectations, based on their life-long observations in the real world. This paper introduces a framework that allows authors to establish natural, human-like behavior, physical interaction and emotional engagement of characters living in a virtual environment. Represented by realistic virtual characters, this framework allows people to feel immersed in an Internet based virtual world in which they can meet and share experiences in a natural way as they can meet and share experiences in real life.     Deep neural network approach in human-like redundancy optimization for anthropomorphic manipulators

    © 2013 IEEE. Human-like behavior has emerged in the robotics area for improving the quality of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). For the human-like behavior imitation, the kinematic mapping between a human arm and robot manipulator is one of the popular solutions. To fulfill this requirement, a reconstruction method called swivel motion was adopted to achieve human-like imitation. This approach aims at modeling the regression relationship between robot pose and swivel motion angle. Then it reaches the human-like swivel motion using its redundant degrees of the manipulator. This characteristic holds for most of the redundant anthropomorphic robots. Although artificial neural network (ANN) based approaches show moderate robustness, the predictive performance is limited. In this paper, we propose a novel deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) structure for reconstruction enhancement and reducing online prediction time. Finally, we utilized the trained DCNN model for managing redundancy control a 7 DoFs anthropomorphic robot arm (LWR4+, KUKA, Germany) for validation. A demonstration is presented to show the human-like behavior on the anthropomorphic manipulator.     A study on like-attracts-like versus elitist selection criterion for human-like social behavior of memetic mulitagent systems

    Memetic multi agent system emerges as an enhanced version of multiagent systems with the implementation of meme-inspired computational agents. It aims to evolve human-like behavior of multiple agents by exploiting the Dawkins' notion of a meme and Universal Darwinism. Previous research has developed a computational framework in which a series of memetic operations have been designed for implementing humanlike agents. This paper will focus on improving the human-like behavior of multiple agents when they are engaged in social interactions. The improvement is mainly on how an agent shall learn from others and adapt its behavior in a complex dynamic environment. In particular, we design a new mechanism that supervises how the agent shall select one of the other agents for the learning purpose. The selection is a trade-off between the elitist and like-attracts-like principles. We demonstrate the desirable interactions of multiple agents in two problem domains

    In this paper we show how rule-based decision making can be combined with traditional motion planning techniques to achieve human-like behavior of a self-driving vehicle in complex traffic situations. We give and discuss examples of decision rules in autonomous driving. We draw on these examples to illustrate that developing techniques for spatial awareness of robots is an exciting activity which deserves more attention from spatial reasoning community that it had received so far
