    Information and communication technology solutions for outdoor navigation in dementia

    INTRODUCTION: Information and communication technology (ICT) is potentially mature enough to empower outdoor and social activities in dementia. However, actual ICT-based devices have limited functionality and impact, mainly limited to safety. What is an ideal operational framework to enhance this field to support outdoor and social activities? METHODS: Review of literature and cross-disciplinary expert discussion. RESULTS: A situation-aware ICT requires a flexible fine-tuning by stakeholders of system usability and complexity of function, and of user safety and autonomy. It should operate by artificial intelligence/machine learning and should reflect harmonized stakeholder values, social context, and user residual cognitive functions. ICT services should be proposed at the prodromal stage of dementia and should be carefully validated within the life space of users in terms of quality of life, social activities, and costs. DISCUSSION: The operational framework has the potential to produce ICT and services with high clinical impact but requires substantial investment

    An Advanced Home ElderCare Service

    With the increase of welfare cost all over the developed world, there is a need to resort to new technologies that could help reduce this enormous cost and provide some quality eldercare services. This paper presents a middleware-level solution that integrates monitoring and emergency detection solutions with networking solutions. The proposed system enables efficient integration between a variety of sensors and actuators deployed at home for emergency detection and provides a framework for creating and managing rescue teams willing to assist elders in case of emergency situations. A prototype of the proposed system was designed and implemented. Results were obtained from both computer simulations and a real-network testbed. These results show that the proposed system can help overcome some of the current problems and help reduce the enormous cost of eldercare service

    The intelligent room for elderly care

    Daily life assistance for elderly is one of the most promising and interesting scenarios for advanced technologies in the present and near future. Improving the quality of life of elderly is also some of the first priorities in modern countries and societies where the percentage of elder people is rapidly increasing due mainly to great improvements in medicine during the last decades. In this paper, we present an overview of our informationally structured room that supports daily life activities of elderly. Our environment contains different distributed sensors including a floor sensing system and several intelligent cabinets. Sensor information is sent to a centralized management system which processes the data and makes it available to a service robot which assists the people in the room. One important restriction in our intelligent environment is to maintain a small number of sensors to avoid interfering with the daily activities of people and to reduce as much as possible the invasion of their privacy.     Information and Communication Technologies together appropriate reasoning tools can add value to current telecare systems, including smart tele-monitoring solutions to enhance the capability for identifying risk situations at home. Cooperation between Home Area Networks (HAN) and Body Area Networks (BAN) at home can provide smart systems to support effective health solutions for ageing people living alone, improving service quality and security to the users and relatives. This paper details the development of a reasoning platform to monitor situations of the person at home, and react in risk situations that demanding care support of remote careers. The system integrates BAN and HAN with intelligent agents, whose behavior is defined by ontologies and rules. The system manages environmental and user data to proactively detect risk situations, and dynamically adjust its behavior to trigger the adequate problem solve mechanisms. A development methodology was also adapted to sustain knowledge acquisition process from experts in all stages of the development process and to create the reasoning logic adapted to the users in telecare scenario.
