A review of information flow diagrammatic models for product-service systems
A product-service system (PSS) is a combination of products and services to
create value for both customers and manufacturers. Modelling a PSS based on
function orientation offers a useful way to distinguish system inputs and
outputs with regards to how data are consumed and information is used, i.e.
information flow. This article presents a review of diagrammatic information
flow tools, which are designed to describe a system through its functions. The
origin, concept and applications of these tools are investigated, followed by an
analysis of information flow modelling with regards to key PSS properties. A
case study of selection laser melting technology implemented as PSS will then be
used to show the application of information flow modelling for PSS design. A
discussion based on the usefulness of the tools in modelling the key elements of
PSS and possible future research directions are also presented
Engineering of service-oriented automation systems: a survey
The evolution of manufacturing systems and the emergence of decentralised control require flexibility at various
levels of their lifecycle. New emerging methods, such as multi-agent and service-oriented systems are major research
topics in the sense of revitalizing the traditional production procedures. This paper takes an overview of the serviceoriented
approach in terms of platform and engineering tools, from the perspective of automation and production
systems. From the basic foundation to the more complex interactions, service-oriented architectures and its
implementation in form of web services provide diverse and quality proved features that are welcome to different
states of the production systems’ life-cycle. Key elements are the concepts of modelling and collaboration, which
enhance the automatic binding and synchronisation of individual low-value services to more complex and meaningful
structures. Such interactions can be specified by Petri nets, a mathematically well founded tool with features that
enhance towards the modelling of systems. The right application of different methodologies together should motivate
the development of service-oriented manufacturing systems that embrace the vision of collaborative automation.The authors would like to thank the European

Process control and configuration of a reconfigurable production system using a multi-agent software system
Thesis (M. Tech. (Information Technology)) -- Central University of technology, Free State, 2011Traditional designs for component-handling platforms are rigidly linked to the product being produced. Control and monitoring methods for these platforms consist of various proprietary hardware controllers containing the control logic for the production process. Should the configuration of the component handling platform change, the controllers need to be taken offline and reprogrammed to take the changes into account.
The current thinking in component-handling system design is the notion of re-configurability. Reconfigurability means that with minimum or no downtime the system can be adapted to produce another product type or overcome a device failure. The re-configurable component handling platform is built-up from groups of independent devices. These groups or cells are each responsible for some aspect of the overall production process. By moving or swopping different versions of these cells within the component-handling platform, re-configurability is achieved. Such a dynamic system requires a flexible communications platform and high-level software control architecture to accommodate the reconfigurable nature of the system.
This work represents the design and testing of the core of a re-configurable production control software platform. Multiple software components work together to control and monitor a re-configurable component handling platform.

Integrated knowledge-based hierarchical modelling of manufacturing organizations
The objective of this thesis is to research into an integrated knowledge-based simulation
method, which combines the capability of knowledge based simulation and a structured
analysis method, for the design and analysis of complex and hierarchical manufacturing
organizations. This means manufacturing organizations analysed according to this

An evolutionary approach to the use of petri net based models : from parallel controllers to Hw/Sw codesign
The main purpose of this article is to present how Petri Nets (PNs) have been
used for hardware design at our research laboratory. We describe the use of PN
models to specify synchronous parallel controllers and how PN specifications
can be extended to include the behavioural description of the data path, by using
object-oriented concepts. Some hierarchical mechanisms which deal with the
specification of complex digital systems are highlighted. It is described a design
flow that includes, among others, the automatic generation of VHDL code to synthesize
the control unit of the system. The use of PNs as part of a multiple-view
model within an object-oriented methodology for hardware/software codesign
is debated. The EDgAR-2 platform is considered as the reconfigurable target
architecture for implementing the systems and its main characteristics are shown
ZASTOSOWANIE SIECI PETRIEGO W SYSTEMACH WSPOMAGANIA DECYZJI OPARTYCH NA INTELIGENTNEJ WIELOŹRÓDŁOWEJ ANALIZIE DANYCH
The paper deals with the design of data analysis systems for business process automation. A general scheme of decision support system was developed in which one of the modules is based on Petri Nets. The way of implementation of Petri Net model in optimization problem regarding service-oriented decision support system was shown. The Petri Net model of distribution workflow was presented and simulation experiments was completed. As a result the optimal solution as a set of parameters was emerged.Artykuł dotyczy problematyki projektowania zautomatyzowanych systemów analizy danych biznesowych. Opracowano ogólny model systemu wspomagania decyzji, w którym jeden z modułów funkcjonuje w oparciu o sieci Petriego. Zaprezentowano sposób implementacji sieci Petriego do realizacji zadań optymalizacyjnych dotyczących zorientowanego na usługi systemu wspomagania decyzji. Przeprowadzono szereg eksperymentów symulacyjnych wykorzystując model przepływu pracy utworzony na bazie sieci Petriego. Rezultatem badań było wyłonienie optymalnego zbioru parametrów procesu biznesowego
