Learning Correspondence Structures for Person Re-identification
This paper addresses the problem of handling spatial misalignments due to
camera-view changes or human-pose variations in person re-identification. We
first introduce a boosting-based approach to learn a correspondence structure
which indicates the patch-wise matching probabilities between images from a
target camera pair. The learned correspondence structure can not only capture
the spatial correspondence pattern between cameras but also handle the
viewpoint or human-pose variation in individual images. We further introduce a
global constraint-based matching process. It integrates a global matching
constraint over the learned correspondence structure to exclude cross-view
misalignments during the image patch matching process, hence achieving a more
reliable matching score between images. Finally, we also extend our approach by
introducing a multi-structure scheme, which learns a set of local
correspondence structures to capture the spatial correspondence sub-patterns
between a camera pair, so as to handle the spatial misalignments between
individual images in a more precise way. Experimental results on various

Fine-grained Few-shot Recognition by Deep Object Parsing
In our framework, an object is made up of K distinct parts or units, and we
parse a test instance by inferring the K parts, where each part occupies a
distinct location in the feature space, and the instance features at this
location, manifest as an active subset of part templates shared across all
instances. We recognize test instances by comparing its active templates and
the relative geometry of its part locations against those of the presented
few-shot instances. We propose an end-to-end training method to learn part
templates on-top of a convolutional backbone. To combat visual distortions such
as orientation, pose and size, we learn multi-scale templates, and at test-time
parse and match instances across these scales. We show that our method is
competitive with the state-of-the-art, and by virtue of parsing enjoys
interpretability as well
Computer vision in target pursuit using a UAV
Research in target pursuit using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has gained attention in recent years, this is primarily due to decrease in cost and increase in demand of small UAVs in many sectors. In computer vision, target pursuit is a complex problem as it involves the solving of many sub-problems which are typically concerned with the detection, tracking and following of the object of interest. At present, the majority of related existing methods are developed using computer simulation with the assumption of ideal environmental factors, while the remaining few practical methods are mainly developed to track and follow simple objects that contain monochromatic colours with very little texture variances. Current research in this topic is lacking of practical vision based approaches. Thus the aim of this research is to fill the gap by developing a real-time algorithm capable of following a person continuously given only a photo input.
As this research considers the whole procedure as an autonomous system, therefore the drone is activated automatically upon receiving a photo of a person through Wi-Fi. This means that the whole system can be triggered by simply emailing a single photo from any device anywhere. This is done by first implementing image fetching to automatically connect to WIFI, download the image and decode it. Then, human detection is performed to extract the template from the upper body of the person, the intended target is acquired using both human detection and template matching. Finally, target pursuit is achieved by tracking the template continuously while sending the motion commands to the drone.
In the target pursuit system, the detection is mainly accomplished using a proposed human detection method that is capable of detecting, extracting and segmenting the human body figure robustly from the background without prior training. This involves detecting face, head and shoulder separately, mainly using gradient maps. While the tracking is mainly accomplished using a proposed generic and non-learning template matching method, this involves combining intensity template matching with colour histogram model and employing a three-tier system for template management. A flight controller is also developed, it supports three types of controls: keyboard, mouse and text messages. Furthermore, the drone is programmed with three different modes: standby, sentry and search.
To improve the detection and tracking of colour objects, this research has also proposed several colour related methods. One of them is a colour model for colour detection which consists of three colour components: hue, purity and brightness. Hue represents the colour angle, purity represents the colourfulness and brightness represents intensity. It can be represented in three different geometric shapes: sphere, hemisphere and cylinder, each of these shapes also contains two variations.
Experimental results have shown that the target pursuit algorithm is capable of identifying and following the target person robustly given only a photo input. This can be evidenced by the live tracking and mapping of the intended targets with different clothing in both indoor and outdoor environments. Additionally, the various methods developed in this research could enhance the performance of practical vision based applications especially in detecting and tracking of objects
Spatial Pyramid Context-Aware Moving Object Detection and Tracking for Full Motion Video and Wide Aerial Motion Imagery
A robust and fast automatic moving object detection and tracking system is
essential to characterize target object and extract spatial and temporal
information for different functionalities including video surveillance systems,
urban traffic monitoring and navigation, robotic. In this dissertation, I
present a collaborative Spatial Pyramid Context-aware moving object detection
and Tracking system. The proposed visual tracker is composed of one master
tracker that usually relies on visual object features and two auxiliary
trackers based on object temporal motion information that will be called
dynamically to assist master tracker. SPCT utilizes image spatial context at
different level to make the video tracking system resistant to occlusion,
background noise and improve target localization accuracy and robustness. We
chose a pre-selected seven-channel complementary features including RGB color,
intensity and spatial pyramid of HoG to encode object color, shape and spatial
layout information. We exploit integral histogram as building block to meet the
demands of real-time performance. A novel fast algorithm is presented to
accurately evaluate spatially weighted local histograms in constant time
complexity using an extension of the integral histogram method. Different
techniques are explored to efficiently compute integral histogram on GPU
architecture and applied for fast spatio-temporal median computations and 3D
face reconstruction texturing. We proposed a multi-component framework based on
semantic fusion of motion information with projected building footprint map to
significantly reduce the false alarm rate in urban scenes with many tall
structures. The experiments on extensive VOTC2016 benchmark dataset and aerial
video confirm that combining complementary tracking cues in an intelligent
fusion framework enables persistent tracking for Full Motion Video and Wide

Linear Regression and Unsupervised Learning For Tracking and Embodied Robot Control.
Computer vision problems, such as tracking and robot navigation, tend to be solved using models of the objects of interest to the problem. These models are often either hard-coded, or learned in a supervised manner. In either case, an engineer is required to identify the visual information that is important to the task, which is both time consuming and problematic. Issues with these engineered systems relate to the ungrounded nature of the knowledge imparted by the engineer, where the systems have no meaning attached to the representations. This leads to systems that are brittle and are prone to failure when expected to act in environments not envisaged by the engineer. The work presented in this thesis removes the need for hard-coded or engineered models of either visual information representations or behaviour. This is achieved by developing novel approaches for learning from example, in both input (percept) and output (action) spaces. This approach leads to the development of novel feature tracking algorithms, and methods for robot control. Applying this approach to feature tracking, unsupervised learning is employed, in real time, to build appearance models of the target that represent the input space structure, and this structure is exploited to partition banks of computationally efficient, linear regression based target displacement estimators. This thesis presents the first application of regression based methods to the problem of simultaneously modeling and tracking a target object. The computationally efficient Linear Predictor (LP) tracker is investigated, along with methods for combining and weighting flocks of LP’s. The tracking algorithms developed operate with accuracy comparable to other state of the art online approaches and with a significant gain in computational efficiency. This is achieved as a result of two specific contributions. First, novel online approaches for the unsupervised learning of modes of target appearance that identify aspects of the target are introduced. Second, a general tracking framework is developed within which the identified aspects of the target are adaptively associated to subsets of a bank of LP trackers. This results in the partitioning of LP’s and the online creation of aspect specific LP flocks that facilitate tracking through significant appearance changes. Applying the approach to the percept action domain, unsupervised learning is employed to discover the structure of the action space, and this structure is used in the formation of meaningful perceptual categories, and to facilitate the use of localised input-output (percept-action) mappings. This approach provides a realisation of an embodied and embedded agent that organises its perceptual space and hence its cognitive process based on interactions with its environment. Central to the proposed approach is the technique of clustering an input-output exemplar set, based on output similarity, and using the resultant input exemplar groupings to characterise a perceptual category. All input exemplars that are coupled to a certain class of outputs form a category - the category of a given affordance, action or function. In this sense the formed perceptual categories have meaning and are grounded in the embodiment of the agent. The approach is shown to identify the relative importance of perceptual features and is able to solve percept-action tasks, defined only by demonstration, in previously unseen situations. Within this percept-action learning framework, two alternative approaches are developed. The first approach employs hierarchical output space clustering of point-to-point mappings, to achieve search efficiency and input and output space generalisation as well as a mechanism for identifying the important variance and invariance in the input space. The exemplar hierarchy provides, in a single structure, a mechanism for classifying previously unseen inputs and generating appropriate outputs. The second approach to a percept-action learning framework integrates the regression mappings used in the feature tracking domain, with the action space clustering and imitation learning techniques developed in the percept-action domain. These components are utilised within a novel percept-action data mining methodology, that is able to discover the visual entities that are important to a specific problem, and to map from these entities onto the action space. Applied to the robot control task, this approach allows for real-time generation of continuous action signals, without the use of any supervision or definition of representations or rules of behaviour

Robust Registration of Dynamic Facial Sequences.
Accurate face registration is a key step for several image analysis applications. However, existing registration methods are prone to temporal drift errors or jitter among consecutive frames. In this paper, we propose an iterative rigid registration framework that estimates the misalignment with trained regressors. The input of the regressors is a robust motion representation that encodes the motion between a misaligned frame and the reference frame(s), and enables reliable performance under non-uniform illumination variations. Drift errors are reduced when the motion representation is computed from multiple reference frames. Furthermore, we use the L2 norm of the representation as a cue for performing coarse-to-fine registration efficiently. Importantly, the framework can identify registration failures and correct them. Visual target tracking for rover-based planetary exploration
Abstract-To command a rover to go to a location of scientific interest on a remote planet, the rover must be capable of reliably tracking the target designated by a scientist from about ten rover lengths away. The rover must maintain lock on the target while traversing rough terrain and avoiding obstacles without the need for communication with Earth. Among the challenges of tracking targets from a rover are the large changes in the appearance and shape of the selected target as the rover approaches it, the limited frame rate at which images can be acquired and processed, and the sudden changes in camera pointing as the rover goes over rocky terrain. We have investigated various techniques for combining 2D and 3D information in order to increase the reliability of visually tracking targets under Mars like conditions. We will present the approaches that we have examined on simulated data and tested onboard the Rocky 8 rover in the JPL Mars Yard and the K9 rover in the ARC Marscape. These techniques include results for 2D trackers, ICP, visual odometry, and 2D/3D trackers
