Does the current minimum validate (or invalidate) cycle prediction methods?

This deep, extended solar minimum and the slow start to Cycle 24 strongly suggest that Cycle 24 will be a small cycle. A wide array of solar cycle prediction techniques have been applied to predicting the amplitude of Cycle 24 with widely different results. Current conditions and new observations indicate that some highly regarded techniques now appear to have doubtful utility. Geomagnetic precursors have been reliable in the past and can be tested with 12 cycles of data. Of the three primary geomagnetic precursors only one (the minimum level of geomagnetic activity) suggests a small cycle. The Sun's polar field strength has also been used to successfully predict the last three cycles. The current weak polar fields are indicative of a small cycle. For the first time, dynamo models have been used to predict the size of a solar cycle but with opposite predictions depending on the model and the data assimilation. However, new measurements of the surface meridional flow indicate that the flow was substantially faster on the approach to Cycle 24 minimum than at Cycle 23 minimum. In both dynamo predictions a faster meridional flow should have given a shorter cycle 23 with stronger polar fields. This suggests that these dynamo models are not yet ready for solar cycle prediction.Comment: SOHO 23 Workshop (SOHO-23: Understanding a Peculiar Solar Minimum, Northeast Harbor, ME, USA, 2009 September 21-25) Invited Paper, 8 pages, 9 figures

Letter from Josefina Niggli to her family – October 12, 1935

Josefina María Niggli was in Monterrey, Mexico on July 13, 1910, but her family fled to Texas when violence emerged during the Mexican Revolution. Her family stayed roving back and forth across the border for many years and Josefina was home-schooled for the majority of her primary school years. She and her mother eventually established a new home in San Antonio, Texas when Josefina was fifteen where she went on to complete high school and pursue a higher education while her father stayed in Mexico “until near the time of his death”. Niggli would continue making visits to Mexico, but America was her country of residence starting in 1925 (Martinez 7-8)

Anmerkungen zum Salienzbegriff in der Soziolinguistik

In this paper I argue that the psychological notion of salience should be kept strictly apart from its causes and effects (on language change or language accommodation). I further argue that we should distinguish between physiological, cognitive and sociolinguistic factors contributing to salience. Finally, it is argued that salience based on social stereotyping is the best predictor of change and accommodation, but needs to be supported by the right evaluation of the salient feature in order to have an effect

Considering that the phone has interfered in the teaching and learning process and that its use can be optimized by teachers and students in favor of a contemporary education, this article aims to promote a reflection on the numerous possibilities of the device as a tool in building knowledge in order to mitigate the disruptive problems caused by their indiscriminate use in the classroom. It presents the results of an action research conducted in the State School John XXIII, in the city of Ipatinga - MG, with the students in the class of Information Technology, the 1st year of high school. The results of this analysis indicate that teaching with cell help is a real possibility waiting for exploitation by teachers, since mobile learning in a real context of the student, became the most motivating process, enabling the acquisition of new skills and knowledge.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
